Because lots of people want a compact grip that doesn't print and makes garment clearance easier but don't have any problem concealing barrel length. I can actually carry a G34 just fine, but I prefer the G19 grip.
Because glock stopped caring what the market wants 2 decades ago. They only care about agency/departmental sales now. They'll sell an agency on swappable slides/frames on the 47/49 and sell them 2500 of each.
Funny enough, the glock AR isn't coming to America anytime soon either, Agencies/Departments want 11.5" bbl for vehicles. For some reason Glock won't shorten it from 16" so they won't get governmental sales. It would do great on the commercial market, but they aren't bothering because they won't get state contracts.
What does the market want? I've always wanted a full length barrel with a compact grip, now we've got it. What else is needed that doesn't already exist?
I can think of a dozen other glock iterations that would do better than a 49 in commercial & govt markets. The 49 was only created to sell agencies the gimmick of interchangeability, it won't have any success on the commercial market.
The 49 was created to address consumer demand driven by the fact that lots of people don't need or want a short barrel.

It's far easier to conceal extra barrel length than extra barrel length. I already carry a Glock 19, this would give me slightly increased muzzle velocity and sight radius with ZERO downsides.

I get what you're saying, but modern pistols loads negate the need for a longer barrel. You'll get effective performance and expansion out of a 3.5" barrel with a decent round like an HST 124 +p

More energy out of the muzzle is more energy on target. If modern handgun loads deliver that energy more efficiently than all the better for extra barrel lengths.
If the 49 wasn't MOS only I'd say there's no reason to get a 19 over a 49 for concealed carry at this point.

pistols with longer barrels tend to shoot better
Lots of people buy 1911s just to get a 45 that doesn't feel like a brick like the G21 or cost a fortune like the Sig P220. If Glock released a single stack 45/10mm that felt like a G17 and used the same holsters that would cut the 1911 market in half and basically start the beginning of the end.
I doubt "lots of people" do that when there are other double stack .45s on the market, like the HK45 and the PX4 .45 with slim grips, pretty much every one has released a .45 striker at some point, many of them more ergonomic than the 20/21

But Glocks are more mechanically accurate than any other $500 pistol and accuracy is another reason why people buy 1911s. The guys who wouldn't buy those other pistols might buy a Glock because the Glock can do close to 4moa.

This is very well known. Many tests have been done comparing the accuracy of modern pistols from ransom rests and Glocks almost always come out on top. This has been my experience too. Hornady Custom 147 grain can do 1" at 25 yards from a rest out of any Glock 9mm that I own consistently, with many other 147s not far behind. 115s usually do the worst. Interestingly Tula steel case ammo is actually the most accurate 115 grain I've used in Glocks. This is one of the reasons why I gave up on revolvers years ago for woods/survival guns. I can kill squirrels and shit just fine with the Glock it turns out.

Another thing is that Glock's polygonal rifling style increases velocity by a surprising amount. A G19 will almost always beat a full size Beretta 92 and most other full size pistols in chronograph tests, for example. The G34 averages 1260 fps with most 124+p, and 1360 with +p+ and can handle thousands of rounds of this ammo, treading on the heels of 357 magnum performance. The guns just really punch above their weight in many ways.

You'll also get significantly more muzzle flip and flash and blast. I have G26, G19, and G34, there's a night and day difference using the same ammunition between them. Standard P in the G26 is worse than +P in the 34. I'm not afraid to shoot the 34 without earpro if I have to, especially with 147 grain, I've done it several times. The 34 gets good expansion and performance with pretty much any hollowpoint you can find. It also gives me a better sight radius if I'm not using a RD. Barrel length absolutely matters and I want as much of it as I can fit in my pants.

checkd, and technically you're 100% correct, but statistically like 90% of defensive shootings occur at 10ft or less. I see a realistic shooting scenario being more of a center target dump, and in that situation I want more ammo over a longer sight radius. Not to mention, when you run 0y weapon retention drills, you see the benefit of a shorter barrel.

My carry gun isn't for self defense, it's for everything. That might be shooting a crackhead trying to mug me at 10 feet, or it could mean taking out a mass shooter at 70 yards down a Walmart aisle, or shooting a bear in the head so it dies before it can get to me, or killing a rabbit at 25 yards for dinner in SHTF. It's my all-purpose gun.

Another thing is that the longer grip prints worse with a pack on or just doesn't interact well with the pack.
This is a gun people have been asking for since appendix carry became popular.
Unlike the 45, 19x, 47, 44, etc, this is them actually listening to the market for once (or blindly stumbling onto what the market wants).
The 45 and 19x increased capacity while keeping the OAL short to increase handling. They're effectively the same gun, but the 19x was created for mil trials because it's LITERALLY what the market asked for.
The 44 has identical dimensions to the 19, completely interchangeable with holsters and accessories. Given the popularity of the 19 it makes a lot of sense because it enables anyone with a 19 to practice with cheaper ammo while using all of their existing gear.
Maybe these 3 weren't the most popular in terms of market demand, but they make sense... unlike the 49.
Slide goes into pants, length of slide has no bearing on concealment
Grip is outside of pants, grip length hugely impacts concealment
But otherwise it should have a hair less recoil than a regular 19 and it looks cool
Holy shit I've been waiting for this for years. I have NEVER had any problem concealing barrel length and the G19 grip fits my hand perfectly even though I have large hands. This is the perfect handgun. This should have come out 30 years ago.
This. I have one Glock, and I don’t need another one. A US Market Glock 46 would get me to buy a second Glock. Just give it a standard US model trigger pull weight and remove the takedown lever at the back of the slide. I’d buy one and then I’d be done with handguns for a decade or more.
Was that going to be a single stack? A single stack 10mm/.45ACP Glock platform with the same external dimensions as the doublestack 9mm series would put 1911 in the grave once and for all, especially if they ship it with the minus connector. The company must surely know this.
you're absolutely delusional if you think some garbage glock is going to put the 1911 in the grave after 112 years. they do not want a polymer gun, they do not want a striker, they do not want a single stack with the external dimensions as a double stack.

They already made a .45 caliber g17, it's called the g37. It's a shame that it didn't take off
My only gripe is the finger grooves, it's the only thing I don't like on the gen 4, and I hate how stippling looks.
What else would even change, extra slide serrations and a different barrel? Probably one less magazine included and a $100 price increase, too.
Maybe I should just order that Gen 4...
a bit confusing with all the numbers, but I suppose it makes sense. 47 = 17 grip length. 49 = 19 grip length. Both with Gen 5 19L slides/recoil spring assemblies.
yes third party makers have been offering a 19L for a very long time now, Polymer80 did it first. This is unironically the first time in a long time Glock is offering something the market actually wanted.
Yes but because it's just a glock 17 and they exclusively make the 47 with an MOS cut, Glock 17 mos has been discontinued. The 17 standard is available though.
Plus the 47 was made for a government contract with BP.
The g47 is essentially the new g17.
Before the g47, you could not swap slides between a g19 and g17. After the success of the glock 45/19x, which is a g19 slide on a g17 frame, glock decided to make a g17 length slide that uses the g19/g19x/g45 recoil spring assembly, which resulted in the g47.
>g19-Compact slide compact frame >g45/g19x-Compact slide full size frame
These israelites are only shipping a single optics plate with MOS models now, btw.

Can I just buy the upper? I really want this but I already have 2 G19s. Am I correct in thinking that it's just a G17 upper designed to fit a G19 frame?
You can but just a reminder that you need to buy the complete 47 slide. The glock 17 and 19 are similar but aren't identical, the barrels aren't interchangeable.
Actually with Gen 5 the barrels are interchangeable. They redesigned the lugs so they all use the G19 style lugs. This means that you could even put a G34 barrel in a 26 now and have 2" of barrel sticking out.
Still unremarkable, but makes way more sense than the 45. >g45 beddur
Less velocity, smaller sight radius, harder to conceal the grip, less mag options. All those things are fairly negligible, but the 49 seems more practical, if just barely.
No. 19/45 recoil and spring system. That is the point. >point being
With a G17 and a G19, you got a G17 and a G19, you can't swap anything. But you will be fine I guess.
With a G19 and a G47, you got a G19, a G19L (equivalent of new G49), a G45 and a G47 (equivalent of former G17), because you can swap uppers and lowers all the way.
With a G45 and a G49 (new factory name for G19L concept) you can do the same, the other way around, and have also 4 guns configurations.
They shouldve done that years ago.
I want a Glock 48 Slide and nose on top of a Glock 19 grip or stated otherwise, a Glock 48 that takes a Glock 19 magazine. This seems incredibly obvious since weight and thickness, particularly towards the muzzle are 2 big factors in carry comfort but Glock won't do it. They wouldn't make a Glock 36 with a Glock 30 handle either. The fuck is wrong with them?
Does glock still hold patents on G19 type guns? My only guess why they're pushing this shit so hard besides procurement requirements is that it gets them away from the gen III market which is essentially open source at this point.
still shit
19x,17,29,44,43x,48 all of my glocks are shit

what's the difference between this and 47? just the length of the dust cover?
49 comes with the 19 frame as opposed to the 47 coming with a 17 frame.

Yes, 49 seems to use the same slide as the 47 which has a 19 length recoil spring.
a bit confusing with all the numbers, but I suppose it makes sense. 47 = 17 grip length. 49 = 19 grip length. Both with Gen 5 19L slides/recoil spring assemblies.
Glock's numbering scheme has nothing to do with information about the gun. It's more or less sequential.
then it's a happy coincidence that it worked out this way.

I'm actually somewhat interested in this. I was tempted to buy a 47 and swap the frame out for a 19.
Does glock still hold patents on G19 type guns? My only guess why they're pushing this shit so hard besides procurement requirements is that it gets them away from the gen III market which is essentially open source at this point.
