No, the F-15 is a counter to what the Soviets PORTRAYED the Mig-25 to be and the Americans actually got scared and believed. Then the crazy bastards actually went and took all the made up bullshit propaganda specs and actually somehow made something real that surpassed them.

They didn't actually find out anything about the Mig-25 for years afterwards until 76 when that one defected to Japan. Man were the Americans in for a big let down lol.

          >took barely any casualties
Big chunk of the casualties came from FF, too. Friendly fire, in fact, from ground attack aircraft which (in its initial operation) reflected ideas from people that thought we had to be and fight *more* like the Russians. The Coalition took more casualties because of Reformer asshats enamored with "Russia Stronk" than they did to an actual Soviet Model Army.

Really makes you think about how frequent Russian and Soviet-style friendly fire incidents actually are.

        >It’s a recurring theme to overrate Russian shit. One could think they do it on purpose
Back in the 1960s? Nah US intel wasn't that great and USSR was running a pretty tight ship. One of those societal tradeoffs, Police States tend to be worse than Democracies at real innovation, keeping corruption in check etc, but they can be quite a bit better at keeping secrets and projecting propaganda.

Also it's a lot better to take things seriously and be conservative and end up with something better than to be caught with your pants down by getting complacent. Particularly since you almost 100% certainly have weaknesses you don't realize, unknown unknowns, as the US has repeatedly discovered. If you then also have massive super strengths on top then you may be able to still muddle through and make up for those weaknesses until they can be corrected later, if you only aimed for "good enough" then suddenly you can find oh, you're actually kinda fricked.

It was never a fighter. It was an interceptor. It's job was to rocket up to high altitude, shoot the target up the ass (the planned but then cancelled B-70), then return to base. That's it.

MiG-25 inlets are plagiarized from 1950s A5 vigilante, in fact MIG25 prototypes looked like a classic soviet cigar. It's very common for all 1960s soviet designs (Su-19, Mig-23, Sukhoi T-4, Tu-22 early and late, Tu-160), soviets tried to copy everything.

hey op, i have a riddle for you:
How come Mikoyan was trying to build his long range interceptor by upscaling MiG-21 airframe bigger (Ye-150 series) , and after years of failures, he suddenly had this brillant idea for new aerodynamic shape, after visiting 1959 Paris Airshow when he saw latest american jet, North American A-5 Vigilante being presented to the public.
      Interesting coincidence, isnt it?

I'd honestly never heard of the A5 before this thread. Why is it so unknown in popular culture and why was its service life so short?

I mean holy frick, look at pic related. Before reading this thread if you were to tell me that this was an aircraft that first flew in 1958 I'd tell you that either
      >you're lying
      >AI generated images are getting really good
      >You've invented a machine that allows you to take photos from alternate dimensions

That shape and design is just so absurdly modern for the 50's, it's a giant flying anachronism. It looks like it belongs in the 70's with the F-15, 14 and 16, it looks like something that could potentially still be in service today with various militaries.

Army didn't want it and it's bigger than the F-14, that could sweep its wings for storage while A-5 could not.

This was developed in 1944 and built in 1945 by the US Army, look familiar? Wasn't deployed because it was thought that it would be too risky to put that many guys in one vehicle, armored or not, and so the smaller M75 was used in Korea, which eventually led to the M113 we all know and love today.

Why is it that Soviet aircraft always have fricked up proportions in comparison to similar Western counterparts?

  10. 11 months ago

Is it surprising the F-15 looks like the MiG-25, despite their dissimilar role? Or is it pretty natural that if you want a very fast spyplane with Soviet technology, you need a lot of thrust (2 engines), a fuselage that won't melt (titanium), and that necessitates huge wings, while if you want a big maneuverable BVR fighter, you want a lot of thrust (2 engines) and big wings (more lift), so you get something F-15 looking, so it winds up being pretty much a coincidence?
(I know the F-15 was based on what the US thought the MiG-25 was, but they presumably assumed it weighed more like the F-15s 28,000lb empty and less like the actual weight of 44,092 lb empty.)

You know what, I'm now thoroughly convinced by all the tinfoil hat wearers who say that military technology is secretly 20-30 years ahead of what we currently have. We had the basic premise for the F-15 ready to go at a point in time when there were still Japanese holdouts fighting on Guam, I'm now ready to believe that we have flying saucers capable of visual invisibility and faster-than-light travel.

Well, just because they figured out the shape early on doesn't mean they could actually build the thing.

We basically figured out areodynamics in the mid 40's, after that it was just getting everything else up to snuff to keep up. In fact, one of the textbooks I used when I was in college was called Areodynamics For Naval Aviatiors, which was published in like 1955 iirc, and the professor said that theres literally no better book to use because they figured it all out by that time and ANA is packed full of good info

        >We basically figured out areodynamics in the mid 40's,
Transonic and supersonic yes, of course, however incompressible flows were pretty much all laid out by Prandtl and Munk in the '20s. Their theories are what I learned in uni in my aerodynamics courses.

Supersonic weapons separation testing, especially with larger diameter strategic weapons, wasn't very well explored when the A-5 was being developed. Shocks coming into a standard bomb bay would whip shit around and often throw the thing back into the plane. See also how the B-58 Hustler would just punch the "Drop tank" with the bomb inside off over the target. The F-105 Thunderchief, a contemporary of the A-5 actually had an internal bomb bay, but that was covered up for more conventional bomb racks.

Wrong, the issue is all the broad principle theories has been established in those days, it comes down to plugging the gaps in knowledge, developing better and more accurate models to the most minute detail that covers the most esoteric and exotic exceptions and fringe scenarios. This reductionist approach to research just results in creating fields within fields of study (this is compounded on top of creating fields of study that just explores the most effective means and way to holistically and systematically unify everything in a neat design/implementation package). This takes exponentially more human and technological capital to achieve.

On top of all this, the material science, electronics and engineering needs to catch up to the aerodynamic design theory and all of those fields are their own can of worms, otherwise no matter how perfect your theories and models are, the thing you're building still won't work if you don't have the engines, the advanced electronics, sensors or materials that can withstand the forces and conditions your super aircraft needs to operate at.

      MiG25 speeds are horseshit
Mach 2.5 is the limit for traditional turbojets
You need bypass ducts to go higher than 2.5 because of compressor stalling
basically the fan blades cannot turn fast enough to clear all the air coming in
