Nuclear winter lasts at most 20 years after that there is a period of intense solar radiation (the CO2 created from the explosions destroy the ozone layer, most radiation from modern nukes goes into space) at this point the world would look a bit like the fallout/mad max desert wasteland because of radiation killing the plants (not nearly all) but because of higher level of greenhouse gasses that would lead to (lots) of thunderstorms (this fixes the atmosphere because lightning creates ozone) so maybe the world would be more like a swampy wasteland? Anyway, the move The Road is the single most realistic representation out there. In about 40 to 50 years everything goes back to normal but with a whole lot less govarment to wary about.
If you think this is enough to warrant the "artificial suns" or even enough to be called an ice age then so be it

UN report from 1980 estimated power of all nuclear weapons around the world at 13k megaton. That was before most of it was disarmed (so now it's less than that).
Tambora vulcano in 1815 exploded with power of 30k megaton. It created "nuclear winter" so in 1816 summer was cold and climate cooled down by 0,3 degree for next few decades. That's it. Except for 11 thousand of people who lived near explosion, everyone survived.
