US rates are boosted by immigration, there is a reason the Western aligned developed world has been struggling with trying to follow the American strategy while balancing the nativist backlash (with very mixed results)

developed economies all seem to hit this demographic wall, Japan is ahead of the curve and the Chinese demographic shitstorm is occurring faster than anywhere else in the world because of one child policy and the speed of China's development. lots of arguments about why this pattern exists with the general arguments being the type of people that developed societies produce have little personal interest or financial benefit in having kids

              It's very well understood, actually.

In developing countries, kids are free. They play outside, feeding them costs nothing, and they help their parents. In developed countries, kids are expensive. They take up space inside, need to be educated and feeding them costs money.

Zoomers are also more awkward with each other because they spend so much time on their tablets instead of face to face. That means they have less babies.

My little sister just had a kid, I think it was $30k or something.
She has insurance through her job which covered most of it but she still had to fork over something like $8k.
I couldn't fricking afford impregnating someone.
I feel happy that my sister has learned from my poor example and ensured our bloodline will continue because I'm more or less a dead branch on that tree.

Germany is 8 weeks before and 12 weeks after birth guaranteed for the mother and then the option of either one year of 2/3 or two years with 1/3 of monthly pay (1800€ max) that may be split between both parents. Taking parental leave counts as years worked for retirement entitlements too.

declining population is not a problem if you are not over extended on debt trying to pay for the welfare state with state guaranteed retirement payments sucking up the money.

Chinks dont give a shit about that and effectively have no social programs what so ever so the elderly are not that big of a deal. They will either work to death or maintain enough kids to help them out.

Importing turdies to high efficiency hosts like euros is counter productive and is just leading to social distruption and ironically a accelerated bankruptcy of the welfare state as the low trust, narcissistic clansters suck up the benefits meant for high trust societies.

Really what is the actual rational basis of this hysteria about "demographic collapse"? Inability to see populations dont increase exponentionally and into infinity? Just like population decline dont last forever. The more there are elderies and lesser people the bigger the incentive to get kids for youngsters for they need something realistic to support them as they go forward. State with its declining tax base is not that

In the case of Japan, trending back toward WW2 70 million isn't necessarily bad -- they will have enough for round 3 with an additional 40% should the need arise anyways. It's a question of pushing the tech development throttle now while there's that extra labor capacity to maintain a lead.

Again, what makes South Korea unique, culturally speaking is that they take Japanese things and amplify them to a ridiculous degree.
Compare the old vertically integrated zaibatsu system of pre-WW2 Japan to the modern Korean chaebol system. It's the same thing, except somehow it manages to be even worse, because chaebol are not owned by a large number of different investors, but families control them. Japan's birth rate issue largely born from overwork and financial issues, especially the housing sector is one thing, but then you have the Korean where the housing situation is far worse for everyone and everyone is working even more.
Korea is basically super Japan in every way that is bad, it's quite impressive they managed to do that.

you don't seem to know much about Korea and japan
the reason japan was forced to open up to trade with the West while Korea didn't was that japan was significantly weaker than Korea. Go look up what Admiral Yi did to the jap navy using a couple of farmers and monks. It was only after literal centuries of trade with the West and getting military tech from them that the japs managed one win against Korea.
jap culture is literally a copy of Korean Shilla culture plus Western influence. Korea is only copying what the japs copied first.
              >chebol
homie, japan is controlled by its megacorps every bit as much as Korea if not more. At least Korea has unicorn companies springing up every now and again.
              >housing sector
are you counting the decaying countryside houses that the japs literally have to pay its citizens to live in? Korea has cheaper rent for noticeably bigger rooms.

japan's advantages comes down to two factors:
people never complain so the government gets away with a lot more
              more land/people

there's a reason that Korea has caught up with japan and in multiple sectors, surpassed japan.

I will ignore your whining about premodern history, because it's not really too relevant to the situation in Japan and Korea today, but I think we both know that you are wrong and that Japan has successfully invaded Korea many times.

                >homie, japan is controlled by its megacorps every bit as much as Korea if not more. At least Korea has unicorn companies springing up every now and again.
There are two differences in how that happens however.
The modern Japanese system is keiretsu, which is a form of distributed holding with wide horizontal reach, but no real vertical integration. These two points, the scattered ownship structure and the lack of vertical integration are key, because they limit the damage that can be done by keiretsu.
Chaebol are not like that, they are modeled after the old Japanese system (partly because Korea was occupied by Japan during the first half of the 21st century, which is when these structures first emerged) and partly because nobody in the West cared to force the subsequent, western-sponsored Korean military dictators to dismantle this system.
The problem with Chaebol is the power they hold over the economy, due to their vertical integration and highly diversified portfolio and the way the power is concentrated in the hands of not many, faceless investors, but the families that own and control the conglomerate.
                They are nothing alike.

                >are you counting the decaying countryside houses that the japs literally have to pay its citizens to live in?
Anon, rural houses having no value is part of having problems with the housing sector. Because there is no reason or benefit to live out in the middle of nowhere, nobody does it, prices drop through the floor. This is the case in any nation anywhere in the world.

                >there's a reason that Korea has caught up with japan and in multiple sectors, surpassed japan.
They didn't have their 1992 yet and it's going to be much worse.

And since the average jap is so beaten down by their own society, they just work for a megacorp and don't think to start their own business aside from maybe a ramen stand. And that's a maybe at best.
Korean vertical integration is a matter of efficiency. Samsung only really does it for their electronics and semiconductor sectors. Not to mention that branches of Samsung has a tendency of splitting off of Samsung, like Hanhwa. So unlike the japs, Samsung doesn't and can't just buy Naver or Kakao. Tho, I doubt you know what either of those two are.
So basically in Korea, mergers happen, branches split off, and startups grow. That's just a strong economy, jackass.

Korea is not doing that, and if anything, US state governments are in love with Korean companies building chip, car, and EV factories in their states.
Thinking that Korea will get plaza accorded is a weeb fantasy. Especially now that the US is trying to bolster its allies using any means.

You misunderstand the nature of my criticism.
I am comparing different systems of megacorps, which have different effects on the power the megacorps have beyond being large employers and large contributors to the nation's economy.
A keiretsu is an extremely diversified holding company. They own many different businesses, which do very different things and they are in turn owned in a very diversified manner. No one person or family controls the keiretsu, because the ownership of the keiretsu mirrors the way it functions. It's spread out, many people have stakes in them. They're mainly financial entities.
Again, this is the problem with Chaebol and previously zaibatsu. Single Families own and control major aspects of a nation's economy. It's why the zaibatsu were dissolved in the first place. To curtail the power and influence of these families.

Chaebol are all family businesses. and while you may be right that Samsung doesn't control Korea. Not alone at least.
Samsung, Hyundai, LG and Lotte together certainly can make such a claim.

                >So I dunno why you're singling out Korea.
Because the Korean birth rate situation is significantly worse than even Japan's specifically due to urban economic pressures and overwork.

                >Plaza accord
That is not why the Japanese asset price bubble happened, even if some may feel that way.

Korea is literally the underdog of Asia raped by China and Japan throughout history, has no glorious imperial history whatsoever unlike everyone else in the region, it's synonymous for slave nation and rapebabies, demonstrated by their everlasting whining about colonial/slave labor/sex slave past. Before Japanese colonization Korea wasn't even an independent nation but a Chinese client state. The sole reason modern Korea isn't part of the former suzerain China or other Asian shitholes but a bootleg Japan is because it was made by Japan in the first place, combined with post independence gibs that lasted well into the late 90s and the US-Japan trade disputes in the 80-90s that culminated in the Plaza Accord and Semiconductor Agreement, which made Japan transfer production and tech to its 'backyard' further. SK is practically a continuation of the Japanese colony Chosen, almost everything but the sovereignty granted by the US and official language remains the same, with the latter also full of Japanese loanwords without which modern Korean simply can't function, just like chaebol is Korean pronunciation of Japanese word zaibatsu.

"hell joseon" is a phrase that exists because 90% of Koreans never been outside Korea and rarely ever read any international news.
They think life in the USA is a fricking marvel movie so they are literally comparing Korea to a fantasy.
Maybe until a decade or so ago "hell joseon" may have been valid but now, by any metric, Korea is in line with all of the developed West.
              >muh birthrates
Korea is better off at a stabilized 30 million people or so. The birthrate is literally a solution to Korea's problems, not a problem itself.

That's cute he thinks nations need permission to develop nuclear weapons.

The only reason Japan and SK and Australia for that matter didn't develop nukes in the 1960s/70s was because US had regional hegemony in Asia and they promised there was no need to develop nukes thanks to extended nuclear deterrence. No one ever believed in extended nuclear deterrence in Asia because absolutely no one believed the US would exchange nukes to protect Tokyo or Sydney. However everyone went along because the US was just so regionally dominant and the strategic environment was mostly benign.

Fast forward to 2023 and you've got a US whose hegemony is weakening thanks to the growth of china and, big surprise, all these nations still don't believe in extended nuclear deterrence. The only question then is if this prompts Indonesia to develop nukes and then south east asia generally. Interesting times.

If Australia had nukes your government would bankrupt itself building nukes from plans it just happened to acquire from Pakistan. It would do so pretty quickly, look at NK GDP, now look at indon GDP. You'd have absolutely no ability to deliver them but it wouldn't matter, these types of details don't phase the monkey minds of South East Asia. Malaysia would likely do the same if indon developed, then Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand etc..

                >public backlash will be insane
The indon public isn't educated enough about foreign policy or international relations to get upset enough to backlash against anything. The Indons fricking butchered Timor for decades, literal decades they massacred Timor, like mass graves, systematic depopulation of entire areas, we are talking mountains of human bone stacked in pits across Timor, it was almost on par with what Misc Pot achieved in Cambodia. Did this generate a huge backlash against Indonesian occupation? Against Suharto? Did the public even know? Nope the average indon was worried about rice prices and taxes.

Would they know the military was developing/buying nuclear weapons from Pakistan. Very unlikely and if they found out they would probably support it, this is the same nation that overwhelming supported war with Australia because of its involvement in the UN INTERFET.

It would develop nuclear weapons because it would be in its interest to do so just as Australia, Japan, SK would for their own national interests.

You need to separate it further, but you can produce up to 80% pure Pu-239 using civilian reactor infrastructure. If you have more advanced specialized research-type reactors, you can probably push that number much higher. There's not a lot of detailed information on HOW to achieve the correct transmutation of reactor-grade Uranium to sufficiently pure Pu-239, but it likely involves a chemical separation step after transmutation. It's probably not that difficult, but there's no real info out there. Likely, Japan and other threshold states know how to do it and have the means to produce sufficiently pure quantities of Pu-239, though.

There's many (scalable) small-scale research reactors around the world, even in countries that don't have nuclear energy. Japan also has sites that specifically deal with the transmutation of reactor fuel (NSRR), which means they have the infrastructure for weapon's grade Pu production. This means the only thing they're really missing is explosive lens technology. Which they probably also have at least some idea of.

I am confident that Japan could build and test a nuclear weapon within a year.

In case of emergency they would use super grade plutonium produced in the fast breeder reactor Monju.

            >In addition, nuclear-weapons experts point out that Japan has already produced roughly 50 kilograms of “supergrade plutonium” in the natural uranium blankets of its Joyo and Monju prototype fast-breeder reactors. Once separated, it would be enough to build more than 10 bombs. In addition, because this fuel is of better quality than the usual weapons-grade plutonium, it would be easier to make smaller bombs.

Ukraine war is a giant signal that nuclear powers can just openly invade other countries and slice parts of their territory off for themselves, it's an open call to nuclearize for every small and medium state out there - this is the main incentive for NATO and the US to intervene, they have been pushing nuclear de-armament for decades (including of themselves)

      Anonymous

In a nuclear world every country either needs to develop their own nukes as quickly as fricking possible - or become a very very good friend/b***h of a nation that has nukes so you get at least some of the benefit of their nukes without the eye-watering cost of actually building and maintaining your own.

According to https://www.statista.com/statistics/752531/nuclear-weapons-spending-worldwide-by-country/ the lowest amount spent by a credible nuclear power (Pakistan) is about $1 billion per annum. Not all that many countries can spend that much on nukes while still maintaining their conventional forces, and there's more than a few countries out there that couldn't manage that if they spent every penny of their defence budget on the project.

      >tl;dr, if Ukraine turns out to be 'just what happens now' then expect a lot of non-nuclear countries to either massively expand their military spending, or start sucking nuclear countries wieners as enthusiastically as they can.

Also possible some country may start selling nukes off the shelf in strategic quantities. Saudi Arabia already has a forward deal with Pakistan. In which case they'll transition to normal weapons status. Their effects are overrated and use would be limited to destroying smaller nations I don't think this would be such a bad thing.

That sounds like a great way for the country turning nuclear salesman to end up as an international pariah. Every nuclear country (the entirety of the permanent members of the UN Security council and a few other significant players, and Israel and North Korea) has a huge investment in keeping nuclear weapons from proliferating, as maintaining the gap between nuclear and non-nuclear nations makes their investment all the more effective (and presumably makes the relevant politicians/officers feel nicely smug on occasion as well).

What's the barest minimum you need as a deterrent, though? A simple gun-type fission weapon doesn't contain any tritium that needs to be topped off every few years or unreplicatable aerogel with an expiration date like thermonuclear weapons have and could be pretty cheap to maintain. Delivery systems aren't cheap either, but if you just need to keep your neighbor from invading they don't need to have intercontinental range.

          >What's the barest minimum you need as a deterrent, though?
You could probably write a couple of books on that question. It would be a different number for each country, they don't necessarily have to get into a full Cold War style arms race with their neighbours, but it'll probably take a lot more than a single gun-type bomb in a V2 tier rocket. Then we've got to remember that building and maintaining the industry to refine the fissile material is not something that most countries could set up, even if they had the money to manage it.

The issue isn't developing a nuke it's maintaining and having platforms to deliver them. You think Lithuania can develop a ICBM? What about an SLBM? What about a long range bomber that's fast, stealthy and had the survivability to enter an adversaries air space? You think they can manage that with a few billion.

What about satellite based missle warning systems to detect pre-emptive nuclear first strikes? What about nuclear countermeasures and decoys for your warheads so they don't get eaten by couter fire? What dispersed ground based silos?

Because all that shit is required if you want a credible nuclear deterrent and there's only a small list of nations that can do any of that shit, protip Lithuania isn't one of them.

Doomsday device. A bomb big enough to frick all neighboring countries when detonated on your own territory. Tsar Bomba was no where near as powerful as thermonuclear bomb can be with 50Mt test yield and 100Mt design yield. That leads to salting the bomb. A salted 20Mt bomb could in theory kill everything living in a country size of Germany, in practice it probably wouldn't work that well, but salted bombs are a technology that hasn't been implemented or even properly tested. Ideally the doomsday device would radiate atmosphere to the point where entire planet would become uninhabitable.

Even with nukes, Taiwan is still so small and so close to China that it's feasible the nukes would be knocked out before the surviving chain of command could send the launch codes. I'm not sure that even a nuke submarine would help that much.

What Taiwan really need to do was get under the nuclear umbrella of the US. That would 100% guarantee 2nd strike capability. In an ideal history, the US would have focused on helping Taiwan instead of Vietnam in the 60s.

      >Ukraine war is a giant signal that nuclear powers can just openly invade other countries and slice parts of their territory off for themselves, it's an open call to nuclearize for every small and medium state out there
Not only that, it's the end of the 5th column(s) business model, wherein the principal enemy (America) of Oriental Techno-Feudal Despotism is made to play geopolitical heel while it's led around by the financial nose [Eurodollar, LIBOR, BIS, colour revolutions et. al.]. Kissinger & co. unironically calling for half-measure armistice with Russia shows how weak their position is (that would only serve to backstop Pinko power base in Brussels/Davos, which is being pulverized between the US finally dumping LIBOR for SOFR, and the Sino-Russian block that both hasn't gotten its way and won't financially imlode, either, thanks to Russian commodities).

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol said for the first time Wednesday that if North Korea’s nuclear threat grows, South Korea would consider building nuclear weapons of its own or ask the United States to redeploy them on the Korean Peninsula.
    This is three things.

    >if North Korean nuclear threat grows
Kim knows a lot of his strategic deterrence comes not from his air force or army, but his nuclear weapons. South Korea has been under a credible nuclear threat since NK first got nukes. This is SK effectively stating that NK's nuclear capability, probably its close range ones (accuracy etc) has gotten too much and they want NK nuke development to slow down or stop.

    >Consider building nuclear weapons
Later on he says this is the second option. SK does have this capability and if the US/Japan/China don't stop them they will be able to get nukes within a few years. This is basically stating that SK is capable of doing it, not that they will.

    >or ask the US to redeploy them
And this is the core of the article. The US had nukes on the peninsula from (iirc) the late 1940s to 1991. Nukes on the Korean peninsula aren't new. The threat to reintroduce them is.

      (OP)

If SK only tries it will become NK overnight. The US, China, Japan, Russia, EU and the whole world would sanction it to death and probably bomb it into submission like Serbia. The US has troops there and can react quickly. It will be the end of korean exports, of kpop and the death of the korean economy. Korea has 0 oil and gas so the country will collapse immediately. Without a military intervention to prevent it, SK becoming NK could push the Koreas to become allies (if NK doesn't nuke SK preemptively).

Yes the US will bomb the shit out of the asiatics. Because with nukes they can't. Otherwise it would be a signal to the world that they can get WMDs like Saddam Hussein and get away with it. You saw what happened to Iraq (even though it was only a pretext) and now Iran. Countries that have nukes cannot be bombed by the US when they misbehave. That is a huge problem and would weaken US power in the world.

Basically got their program from the French and successfully concealed it as a TeXtIlE fAcToRy, as both satellites and fourier-transform DSP tech to detect programs and testing were still being invented at the time. India and Pakistan both buried their enrichment programs under mountain ranges, and Best Korea endured a crippling famine in order to continue their program in the open.

Believe it or not developing nuclear weapons isn't against international law, there would be no basis for sanctions especially against a key security partner in Asia. What a delusional fricking post.

Even thirdie shitholes like Pakistan received almost no consequences from developing nukes. Why? One it's not illegal, Two it was at the time a key US security partner.

          Wrong

Outside of the West + Russia who developed theirs very early, there was active sabotage and assassination on nuclear scientists against Pakistan, China and India

There is also the strategic calculus involved for NK. Given the tech disparity, SK could easily field significantly more, and more accurate, nuclear weapons integrated with existing systems dispersed across the entire peninsula along with anti-missile systems, making a NK first strike scenario unlikely to prevent mass nuclear retaliation.

I think the bigger issue is that we've seen what an embarrassment Russia's military is, and the only reason they're actually a threat to NATO is their nukes. IE, we're at the point where investing in nukes is significantly cheaper and easier than investing in everything else militarily to earn the tile of being one of the top dogs like the US, and having a military beyond nukes is only for invading countries that don't have nukes rather than dealing with a near peer threat (who would also have nukes if you're a nuclear power).

Every first world country with nuclear power can build a nuke or figure out how specifically do to do it in a relatively short time.
The research exists and is publicly known, the details need to be worked out yourself, but they're not that difficult in the 21st century, because computers have come a long way.
The actual issue is the production of materials and the handling of dangerous substances on a bulk scale and the large-scale access to Uranium. Which is why it requires nuclear power to begin with.

Thats why mutts should have immidiately sent nato troops in ukraine the very day russia invaded. Now every shithole wants their own nukes and only NATO is to blame, because their deals are worth shit. They disarmed a nuclear country promising it's integrity and now its getting invaded.

The Iran invasion was attempted by the neocons years ago there was a preparatory media campaign it was very close but it received a lot of pushback in the elite circles and europe that it was cancelled because everybody remembered the lies that lead up to the Iraq invasion. But it will happen so a nuclear Iran will never be allowed Iran will be invaded at some point.

I disagree. I don't think nukes will save Russia from defeat or collapse. No more than chemical weapons saved the Central Powers of WW1 or the Axis of WW2. Yes, chemicals were used but massive stockpiles weren't out of fear of retaliation. Same for nukes, they're not going to change a determined outcome, they're only going to make it far more punishing.
NATOA could decide to push Russia conventionally and there is not a thing Putin could do. Even suggesting using nukes would mean facing them back, and no one wants that. Anyone who does would be forcefully and quickly silenced.

    >South Korea
Man, I was trying to find something to watch on Netflix (bought 1 month already canceled) and saw picture related. I started watching it and it had bright colors, sword fights and wizards. It seemed warm, wholesome and light hearted. So I'm like 5 episodes in and realize nobody is fighting anymore and I'm on the edge of my seat trying to figure out of Mu Deok is going to fall in love with Jang Uk or her childhood crush Seo Yul. That's when it hit me. Mother fricking I'm hooked on a god damned soap opera. Fricking Koreans man but I kept watching because I had to know and that Jung So-min is really pretty. She looks like my grandmother when she was young except my grandmother wasn't Asian. So that's weird but whatever. I kept watching because of that and then season 1 ended and they replaced that actress and did bother dubbing it so now I'm into season 2 and I'm hooked but the hot girl I liked that looked like my grandmother is gone and I have to read subtitles.
I have very mixed feeling about South Korea right now.

Its a good show, simple as.
SK knows how to make wholesome shows and mix the proper amount of grim dark/humour into it. Never thought I would watch a show called My Shy Boss but its 2023 and here we are.
      >that Jung So-min is really pretty.
Just be aware they switch the actress for the second part. It makes relative sense given the lore and she looks a bit like Mu Deok's actress, probably prettier by SK standards, but personal opinion I preferred the first actress a lot.
Not all SK shows are the same tho. Some get really fricking dark. Black is the most depressing shit I've ever seen. Imagine a live action Bleach except the reapers throw kids off roof or organize to have toddlers killed by pedos because they were fated to die but somehow managed to dodge it.

I know anime fans hate live action but the live action Bleach movie on netflix is one that I loved. So, I'll check it out.

          Anonymous

I'm warning you, I usually love dark shows but this one broke me. I have never been so horrified about how one fictional protagonist treats another fictional protagonist, and how fricking dark the twists got. By the 5th episode I was constantly getting angry at it so I fricking stopped. Maybe in the last part there's some twist that reveals how everything wasn't so fricking suicidal the whole time, and how the main character was actually a much better person, they very often do that in SK shows, but there was no indication of it coming...
And its not so much a fighting show, despite being clearly a gender-bent Bleach (Rukia is the mortal who can see ghosts and reapers, Ichigo is the Reaper), Ichigo just straight up murders people or reapers or set them up to be murdered by someone else. Rukia's power drove her to try to hang herself during the first episode after watching her ex die and doing nothing to prevent it, but Ichigo possessed the dead body of her only friend to save her because he needs her power to track down an escaped reaper. He hates her because she's suicidal and all Reapers hate suicides but he's forced to act friendly and manipulate her, and she forces him to try and save people fated to die. The show becomes "how can Ichigo save those people in front of Rukia only to set up their murder again when she's not looking long enough to track down the escaped Reaper, at which point I'll reveal everything to Rukia and let her kill herself so I can torture her soul later on." I am not fricking exaggerating at all, its the fricking most depressing thing ever. Also Rukia's a cute and you wanna protect her.
Otherwise there's The School Nurse Diaries which is a blast, especially at the start. That show is just fun. Hotel del Luna and Pop Up Mystic Bar are okay too if you want to scratch the supernatural drama with hot female lead itch, but its heavier on the drama side than the supernatural side.

Well I looked for this show on both Netflix and Amazon Prime; did not see it. I will not get to watch it.
Also, I tend to multi-task a lot while watching shows. That makes subtitles very annoying even though I did watch through part 2 of Alchemy of Souls. I hated how much I liked it and I liked the silk dresses and gardens. The women's israeliteelry... I'm not a gay and I don't like soap operas. Fricking South Koreans are messing with my head anyway.

Its okay, you aren't as far deep as me, just finished 2135 (show about cute teen fencing competitions) and Hometown Cha-cha-cha (Upper class city dentist moves to small town and falls in love with the town's Golden Boy). I can't watch western media anymore, every time there's more than one ethnicity displayed at once on screen I start clenching fists.
I don't know what it is about SK that does it either, I have tried watching Chinese and Japanese shows in the same veins as AoS or Kingdom or Mr Sunshine (btw that one is really fricking good, watch it). Both ended up repulsing me in different ways. Chinese actors looks like replicants, and by God is everyone fricking effeminate as frick. Of course SK culture isn't that masculine, but there's usually one or two buffed manly character somewhere to offset everyone being in dresses and the silly hats.

The real issue is that this would create a significant drive for a lot of countries to build their own. Nuclear proliferation is really problematic from a global balance of power standpoint and highly undesirable for the most part.
If SK goes through with creating a national nuclear arsenal, there are multiple candidates to follow suit. And when the precedent is set, there is little diplomatic room to discourage proliferation.
