From the simple definition of "To win is to end up in a better strategic situation than your enemy, even if only relatively to theirs", Russia lost back in fricking March, and since July all that awaits them is national annihilation, either brought about by an identity-shattering peace treaty that will make the aftermath of the Versailles treaty look like friendly banter, or by slowly collapsing under the economic strain of an industrial war, or (And this is the kick in the nuts for you vatBlack person), by the west fully bringing down its all-powerful soft power knee with such viciousness even Iran will drop them faster than burning coal in order to make a Russian military victory so fricking self-destructive to them that we can finally retire the word Phyrric for Putinic. Russia lost its last winning path when Nordstream 2 blew up, because after that, the west had economically decoupled to the point that the only barrier to economic and political cruelty is a halfway decent pretext, and to assure they are aware you have something more vicious planned out for every month they try our patience . All that is left is to see how painful and disgraceful their inevitable defeat will be, not whether it will occur.

The armed forces of Russia can still win. Russia however, is fricked beyond any rational understanding.

This board overestimates how much russian casualties matter. We already know Wagner took 50,000 convicts. They can lose literally all of them and its not really a 'loss' for Russia.

            Anonymous

Yes, yes it is. Because those oh so expendable convicts have been inducted in the first place because of how absolute garbage the Russians' manpower situation is. And they still need to be equipped, fed and given transportaiton to the front, none of which comes free. And when you then end up sending them all into suicidal attacks that achieve little other than effectively serve as life-fire training for rotating ukrainian units, your "expendable" convicts become an active liability. Cannonfodder tactics don't work when your cannonfodder achieves absolutely nothing of substance.

What’s the actual problem with it, hohol? Russia is fighting a war of attrition and winning.

            Anonymous

The problem is that Russia got into an attritional fight in the first place. Modern military powers don't
            >get baited into attritional warfare by a supposedly inferior opponent
            >constantly opt for the urban assault, because their fundamental idea of war is sub-moronic
            >opt for the urban assault because they were literally incapable of encircling and bypassing
            >proceed to somehow *lose* the attritional fight spectacularly
Modern military powers who are winning attrition battles don't need to roll out T-62s, BTR-50s, and MT-LBs with naval turrets poorly welded on, while the inferior opponent is receiving Leopards, Challengers, and Bradleys.

/k/ope will never admit that the 6 month "siege" was done exclusively by Wagner morons, with little to no help from the Russian army until Soledar fell. They also won't admit that the prisioner meat waves were very intentionally badly equipped, they were never meant to survive, their only job was to exchange well-trained and well-equipped Ukrainian soldiers for useless meat wearing useless equipment. Now before you start screeching, no, I'm not saying that the regular Russian army is well equipped and well trained, I'm saying that they used even lower-quality "soldiers" to wear out experienced Ukrainian troops

Once Soledar fell and the regular Russian army started participating in the Bakhmut siege, they made significant progress in surrounding the city during the last two months. Before you start srceeching about "ha! Two months for that" Just look at how much progress Ukraine made in the first two months of attacking Kherson.

I'm not a vatnik (not that it matters what I say, you call label me as one of them regardless) but some facts about the battle for Bakhmut get intentionally ignored or misinterpreted because of how memefied the perspective about this war has become. Yes the Ukrainians were getting a favorable kill ratio in Bakhmut, but losing good soldiers to kill meaningless Wagner buffer meat is not the same as wearing down elite troops in Vuhledar, which, IMO is a better example of a favorable position than Bakhmut is currently

In this interview the chief of medical service at a hospital that recieves WIA from Bakhmut states that they recieve "more than" 50-60 WIA every day. Assuming 50 WIA per day, it ammounts to 12k Ukrainian casualties in Bakhmut and the surrounding areas over the course of the last 8 months. That battle is not like what the memes here tell you. Russia's convict wave attacks are not about being smart, it's about a level of cruelty that you can get away with when you are a dictator. 12k casualties is not meaningless for Ukraine. They are not sending convicts to die. Those are soldiers and they need every single of them if they want to conduct further counter-offensives

This may shock you, but that's not how it actually works in practice. Killing the odd bumfrick private doesn't "wear down" the unit he's part of. A small trickle of casualties while the unit gains combat experience, followed by rotation off the front and new replacements being brought in is literally the platonic ideal of how to turn a regular formation into one of hardened veterans and increase its effectiveness.

To actually wear down a formation to the point of degrading its experience and effectiveness you need to inflict serious losses and/or prevent it from being rotated off the line for an extended time, so it can't digest the experience gained and properly integrate replacements. Running thousands of cannonfodder into their deaths piecemeal only makes for a good opportunity to gain combat experience at minimum cost for the units opposing them. If that was the Russians' plan, then whomever came up with it ought to be shot as a saboteur.

I’m not going to call you a Vatnik, your analysis is sound.
I personally think Prigozhin decided to use, (or was made to use),Bakhmut as his winning move in the Kremlin dick-measuring contest, and once the plucky Ukies didn’t run away, the Army was more than happy to shortchange his supplies and leave him there with his balls caught in the meat grinder and squealing like a pig while they’ve…very slowly…tried to bypass and envelop it.
Yes, those games get played, and poor Vathomiez and Wagnertards die.

People were jumping up and down about the 300k mobilization, but everyone forgot the Tooth to Tail ratio of the Russian Army, SWAG on my part being about 5-1.
This means out of those 300k, only 60k trigger-pullers, (or wretched buggers hiking around the Donetsk Oblast with a fricking stick to get zapped dead by drone-augmented Ukies).
And even at a 5-1 T2T, they’re STILL woefully undersupplied by NATO standards, which is severely impacting their combat effectiveness.

Russians need trucks and people to drive them.
They also need to start summary executions of thieves and drunks and incompetents back up the log train, right up to some Important People, AND put their economy on a War Footing.

Stalin got results because Beria had no qualms about shooting generals and corruptocrats.
I think we’re starting to see that.

Except the Ukrainians promptly started rotating their troops, thus ensuring that they were suffering massively fewer casualties and that the experience and combat capabilities of the units involved were wholly preserved. This whole idea of wearing down the enemy by throwing cannonfodder at them only works when you do it both continously and along most to all of the frontline, not just a small part of it. A localised grinder just fails to achieve anything notable as long as the other side keeps rotating their units.

The wagners were sent in to force the ukies to man the trenches, which then were hit by wagner artillery. Repeat until there are no ukies left, then the wagner patrol seizes the ukie trench, and the front moves forward a few hundred meters.

hmm let's do the calculus here homosexual
          >insurgency kills some hundreds-to-thousands over the course of ~20 years of occupation
          >retain otherwise functional urban zones and positive economic activity
          or
          >suffering 30k-50k dead and some unknowable number of casualties since August attacking a town of marginal strategic importance
          >doing so is now publicly known to be pulling resources from more meaningful offences, like Vuhledar
          >exacerbating causalities in Vuhledar and elsewhere because of it
          >do this during mud season
          >the urban zone is ruined and needs billions in reconstruction

basically you're moronic and a homosexual

playing devils advocate here, but the town is on relative highground overlooking the surrounding area including pavlivka. this view is virtually unrestricted and what little cover there is has been ranged by arty. plus its on the old contact line so the town itself is heavily fortified and there are mines everywhere.

There are only 6 battalions of ukranians inside Bakhmut itself and they are all named, this is the equivalent of 2 brigades or 4000 to 5000 men.

It's only parts of those battalions. Honestly could be 2000 dudes.

That's how it was last month and by the start of this month. By march 5 or 6 reinforcements moved into the city and now there's more men, close to 10k.

...but they why do they keep attacking like morons instead of leveling the place?

Because its a large heavily fortified military base surrounded by fortifications and entrenchments. It's been grind down to a fight for the actual city/base in the eastern and south-eastern part at this point. They still haven't really reached it in the north.
