It's a naval cannon. HE (in its various guises) is much more useful against a ship or land target than a long rod. Besides, they're often shooting ballistic trajectories, rather than direct-fire.

Since they used normal ammuntion which costs around 3.550€ each (for comparison, the DART is 22.800€) at a rate of fire of 120rpm, so 2 rounds per second, it would probably cost around 85.200€.

All OTOs in Italian service have the STRALES system installed, so they serve as the main short-range (<8 km) air defense weapon. A Dart round is way cheaper than a PAAMS effector.

Yes, but not only they didn't use the missiles, they didn't even use the DART, just 6 shots of normal ammo, which costed them only 21.500€ btw.

LCS ships are being decommissioned less than 5 years. USS Sioux City for example, commissioned in November 2018 and decommissioned in August of 2023. 4 years and 9 months.

And at the same time the navy has cut future LCS orders and has started planning on 20+ constellation-class frigates to do the Bluewater duties the LCS ships were originally intended for but haven't been capable enough to actually do.

It's a truly gorgeous ship, as are the Type 45/Horizons.Arleigh Burke and Japanese/Korean derivatives are also good looking.

Unlike FREMM and this piece of shit

Italian FREMM is not bad actually, I think it looks good. The FREMM EVO and the new DDX are nice too

it looks like a generic semi stealthy Euro frigate hull. BMD capable sensor suite and 32 cell VLS on 6500t platform, what is not to like? The Brits liked it so much they based the type 31 design on the Iver Huitfeldt-class

The froggies did relatively well, but they got butthurt because they ended up spending a shitton of money (they used Asters to intercept drones, which is a massive expenditure).

Froggies also reloaded Aster on their Fremm directly in Djibouti via A400M deliveries, I don't think any other nation did that (Bongs went back to Gibraltar and I don't know about Burgers)

USN was playing around with at-sea-replenishment again for VLS cells without using a port/dock. Though it's not something they're actively using yet, more being done incase they need to do it in the Pacific in a future war against China.

IIRC they used to do that way back in the day, but in a more primitive fashion (didn't have advanced robotics to help). They stopped after a few close calls that could've gone sideways. Hopefully they get to stick the landing this time around.

Spending couple of thousand of dollars to take out a drone at 8km Is a good deal...the ripple effect of this experience could end up in the Otomatic representing itself in the market

The Radar at the time was the VPS-F06, which could technically do it with some difficulty, but if it had modern OTO MELARA radars the definitely, it would probably hit a shahed drone spot on.

Things the same Italian military that, in Afghanistan; bribed the Taliban to just stay away - but then turn around and lied in the media about all the amazing military successes they were having.

I wouldn’t trust the Italians with my second favourite potato.

Maybe the West really has fallen. Not trolling. Why? I’m trying to picture a scenario in which anyone, even Germany, would just let some desperately poor brown shithole enemy nation just continually spam attacks at their ships and disrupt a major shipping lane if this were happening 30 years ago? No, I don’t see it. THe US and everyone else there would be hammering the shit out of those people until they gave up, with likely even troops on the ground at some point to secure a regime-change. Not this weak cuck shit of “We SHOT LE DONE WITH OUR HECKIN CANNON (76mm)!” I wonder what’s changed, it’s temping to just call them weak losers but there must be a systemic underlying issue which makes the West look so ridiculously weak compared to historically AND compared to our current theoretical power.

      they're farming XP.
seriously, the biggest threat against the aircraft carriers and most modern ships has been missile spam. here's a wonderful opportunity to develop defense against said missile spam and it's being provided by a bunch of sand Black folk that believe "allah" will guide the drones to their targets.
they'll just let this continue until the U.S. figures they have enough data to improve upon the current system such that any Chinese missile threat will be properly neutralized. Then they'll send in a few special forces teams to wipe out the more experienced Houthi crews, use local intelligence assets to target VIP's, and discreetly support other groups in the region that hate the Houthis so that the major threat is effectively neutralized.

Good, now the USA should leave the area and never go back. It is obvious that the US Navy will not blockade the Houthis. No point of feeding the enemy and staying there getting shot at. We never should have been there, anyways.
