The best Ear Pro.

What's the best ear pro for Arty dudes?

Those friggin things are 183 dB at the ear, so I'm gonna need to double up (ie. plugs + muffs). I fear I'm gonna lose my hearing because even if you take away let's say 40 dB, it's still 140+ dB.

A lotta Arty guys don't wear ear pro or don't buy any gear, so they end up totally deaf. I have good hearing.

they don't because of blast pressure can blow out your ears. open you mouth and turn your back.

That's complete bullshit, OP don't listen to trolls.

3m or Howard leight worked fine for me, but you have to know how to put in earplugs the right way. Roll them up really tight, maybe even lick them I am not joking, and then pull your ear up with one hand while you put the ear plug in with the other. I did and enlistment as an assaultman and got out without any hearing loss because I was autistic about wearing earplugs. And the SMAW is 175 at the ear, not as bad but I want to say it's the second loudest thing in the Marine Corps behind the Almighty m777.

Yeah I'm going 0811. I was looking to maximize protection. I'm not gonna stay in forever, but it's cool and after college I'm going for jets. Pilots can't have hearing problems.

Was an 0811 for a while. Realistically you’re going to be wearing foamies under comtacs. This is more than enough, lower charges aren’t even that loud.

If you have any questions I’ll be around to answer them ITT

I was thinking of getting some 3M E-A-R Classic Plus plugs (33 dB NRR), the yellow ones. And some active earmuffs. The fattest ones are Howard Leight (30 dB) but usually do 20 - 23 dB on average. I'm just really scared of the sound level.

You will more than likely be issued Comtacs, and will likely be required to wear them. Those buds are solid though.
I’m also being 100% sincere about the noise level not being that bad, I still have all of my hearing data and would post proofs if it wasn’t a hard doxx. The noise level increases exponentially with every increase in charge, so for example a 1L will be very quiet in comparison to a 5H. But you will not be shooting 5Hs all that often so you don’t have to worry about every mission being incredibly loud.

Peltors? Those were 28 dB NRR right?

I don’t know, you are overthinking this lol. Don’t worry about the sound, it’s completely safe if you double up with foamies and the provided Peltors. Worry about learning your job and not being a moron.

Foamies are why I can still hear after being a jet mech. Then and now I toss them in a shirt pocket since they're washable. I have bags in my shops too.

Yea, see, I would never take this chance. Foamies aren't bad but a nice pair of earplugs cost like $25. It's worth it.

Oh another thing, you’ll do semi regular hearing tests and you’ll be able to see any change in your hearing. I can personally tell you that I was lazy about wearing earpro near the end of my time in. I had no hearing loss whatsoever, the memes about all artilleryman being deaf aren’t true at all. The only people that suffer hearing damage we’re egregiously moronic about not wearing ear pro. Also your chief is going to force you to wear it so don’t even worry about it.

Dunno, a lot of instructors have hearing aids. Maybe some Motor Ts are moronic and don't wear earpro too. I've heard stories of section chiefs not allowing muffs.

I can tell you with 100% certainty that a section chief that doesn’t allow earmuffs is a bad section chief. I never heard or experienced that as wearing PPE is both required and encouraged.

              >What's the best ear pro for Arty dudes?
Some sort of full head wraparound thing if you're allowed, like what aircraft carrier pit crew guys use.
              >I fear I'm gonna lose my hearing because even if you take away let's say 40 dB, it's still 140+ dB.
This is correct. IT IS NOT POSSIBLE TO FULLY PROTECT YOUR HEARING FROM ARTILLERY FIRE WITH JUST EARPRO. All there is to it, sorry anon. Definitely do the best you can if that's all there is so hopefully you don't go 100% deaf but you will start losing your hearing in high frequencies from the very first shot unless you have full worn gear.

So again, ideally you'd have something like pic related, that can beat the earpro limit and give you >40dB of reduction. Whether that's something your unit will allow I have zero idea, no arty experience. See "Protecting beyond the bone-conduction limit"

This is bullshit lol, you are also not at the muzzle so the sound data for all of this is flawed. The brake directs the sound away from the crew. If your battery is competent then you won’t be in the blast radius of friendly pieces as well.
Some of the instructors at Sill are violently moronic. Going deaf in artillery is 100% a choice.

Double up. Foam inserts inside and electronic ear pro with sound cranked up.
I don’t know how bad the concusive blast wave is though.

The absolute best ear pro you can get? Probably those helmets you see flight deck dudes wearing because after a certain point, you’ll literally just get sound and concussion reverberating straight through your skull no matter how much earpro you have, so something that helps mitigate that is ideal. Maybe the helmet that the dude in OP’s pic is wearing might help serve that role some too.

dB is rated in a logarithmic scale. 10 dB is considered to be, to humans with a non linear sense of amplitude, a doubling of apparent loudness. so even a 40db reduction is extremely significant.

Consider this: The 183 dB of an M777 are closer to the threshold of 195 dB where sound waves become shockwaves, than it is from the 140 dB damage threshold.

At the muzzle on a C5H. C5Hs will shatter windshields and cell phone screens that are too close but in all actuality you will be rarely shooting these and there is a hard cap on how many a crew can fire in 24 hours.

this is real frickin moronic. especially moronic. Wear two forms of earpro, the army should be telling you to do this and issuing you both. it's 183 at the barrel, stand behind the piece and it's 140-150.
