The Bakhmut Grift

Just a few months ago barely anyone knew who Prigozhin or his Wagner Group even were. Now their struggle for Bakhmut is on everyone's minds and it got me thinking. Obviously from a military strandpoint the absolute slog that this battle became is really bad for the Russian side and showcases just how limited their offensive capabilities became a year into the war, but from a cynical point-of-view of an oligarch fighting for influence and prestige I think this state of affairs actually benefits Prigozhin more. If his forced had captured Bakhmut quickly the vatniks would celebrate, but they would probably move on relatively quickly as it was the case with Severodonetsk and Lysychansk, but now Bakhmut was elevated to this climactic battle of the war, the modern Verdun with Wagner leading the charge just like the German stormtroopers a 100 years ago. So with all that newly found attention and influence does finally ending the battle even benefit Prigozhin? And have there been more cases of military leaders basically grifting to turn their mistakes into these kinds of "heroic struggles"?

sorry grandpa, the current russian propaganda is that Wagner is a whiny small force that tries to help the glorious russian army but fails and puts comrades in danger

That is just not true tho.
The Bakhmut slog actually makes pro-Russian commentators side with Wagner. Here's History Legends whose 10 out of 12 latest videos were about Bakhmut or just Wagner which he basically fetishises at this point and to me it is a clear indication that Prigozhin's grift is absolutely working and throughout the last couple of months you can see more and more pro-Russian sources dickriding Wagner while openly criticising the Russian High Command has become way more acceptable than in the past

I have a friend who kinda got affected by this shit. Started talking about Wagner like some obsessed homosexual, how cool it would be to join and this as a european rich kid. A few days early he was on a doomer trip how many Ukranians are dying and lost it about that one guy he knows who is in Ukraine. A week in some Wagner assault unit would fix his delusional views.

This happens if you choose become a meme and larps as doomer while being a rich kid lol

Those Pro-Russian commentators are just paid off by Wagner. Beyond Wagner having their own PR department and budget like a legitimate PMC even though they're illegal, Prigozhin was always involved in the shadier part of Russian internet psyops and information operations. He's a Russian Mafia mob boss and high level FSB asset. Wagner also likely has its own PsyOps section, just like it has its own air section.

Didn't they actually pull out at some point and then just fought off the Wagner mercs and took it back later months ago? I remember at some point they got overrun and then just took it back in like september or october.

That's what wagner and chuggers claimed. They claimed they took the right side of Bakhmut about 5 times last year.

The industrial district changed hands several times over the course of the battle. The funny part was that Ukraine always retook stuff way quicker then it took Wagner to get it and one critical location was a garbage dump Russia was fighting over for a month or so

Is the garbage dump in the KGB commie gays hands' now? I know since mid January they kinda have half the city under control.

I think so. Most of the industrial district has been under Russian control for a while now

I also think so, but deep down, what difference does it make really. The effect is the same.

Prigohzin is going to fall to his death out of a basement window once Pussolini dies of his Gay AIDS.

The Russian Army might not be good at killing Ukie soldiers, but gakking unprotected rivals is something they can do.

Alternatively, Prigozhin becomes a modern warlord with that chad from Chechnya as another, and they co-operate in carving pieces off of what used to be Russia.

Prigo might also be on CIA payroll to do exactly what he’s doing.

Prigo could be killed soon, the Russians media stopped mentionjng Wagner and are just talking about mod and army, his plan was probably yo get command of the army and then, at some point, lead it to Moscow. I guess he will be window'd soon

He's been a KGB pawn since his teen years.
He participated in the failed KGB coup of 1991, killing several civilians (including Afghanistan vet) in the process before running away. Later he got a pardon from the KGB remnants when they got into power and his career really took of.
Between gaining the reputation of "General Armagedon" in Syria, he managed to get rich selling most of the materiel under his care on the black market and suiciding those among his subordinates that had objected. He also managed to make spectacular blunders in Chechnya.
tl;dr: one of Putin's many KGB thugs, a literal traitor and criminal on top of being a moron and a coward.

Shit like this just makes me consider this thought I had when this war started and I started seeing the level of these generals and politicians around Putin. The thought I had was that Russia is the United States if every single possible conspiracy theory about it is true. The KGB and other Warsaw pact intelligence officers coming out after the Cold War and speaking about how they were involved in spreading AIDS conspiracy theories about the CIA being behind it makes this thought I had even stronger.

Prigozhin is Wagner's owner, not commander. He's also one of the highest ranked Russian Mafia bosses. Half the reason the battle is happening is because of the money he's getting from it. Shit, that could easily be the main reason. Wagner is also a illegal mercenary organization, of course they're doing it because they're hired for it.

      >Wagner's owner
He's not. He's just the face of it.
      >highest ranked Russian Mafia bosses
Never was high ranking or a boss in that world.
      >because of the money
Lmao. Money is worthless if you get killed for not getting results, expected of you.
      >illegal mercenary organization
Add 2 and 2 brainlet. They are just government's proxy.

Them being a deniable irregular force for the Russian government doesn't make them not a illegal mercenary organization. So does the FSB and the rest of the government being entirely able to just pull the plug on them and destroy them not make it so they're not doing it for payment, even though the government pays them because they want to not because they need to.

Wagner was way over their heads and way too deep from the start. They start as a Mafia-owned mercenary organization hired to do RU government dirty work and then end up as pretty much slaves to the RU military and security forces. This was likely the plan since the beginning.

    >influence
What influence? The only way to have influence in Russia is to be in Putin's inner circle. This guy never was part of it and never will be. He could have done the whole thing quietly and lived but he chose to open his mouth and now he's guaranteed to die before this war is over.

Not exactly, Priggy has favors with Putin but more importantly he became the face of the one group of dissidents Putin allowed - the pro-war ones who kept b***hing and moaning about how poorly the war is being conducted by the Russian army and I think this is the reason why Russian military establishment tried to reign him in. Their fates are entirely dependant on Putin staying in charge, but if he's ever gone people like Priggy will thrive

I personally suspect Laserpig has the right of it.

Wagner get to be the scapegoats for why everything failed, and why there were war crimes, etc.

Prigozhin probably thought taking Bakhmut would make everyone think Wagner was badass and scary, which would be useful for winning the inevitable succession war. Instead, they got exposed as a bunch of useless homosexuals and if Russia fails to take Bakhmut before the next Ukrainian counteroffensive then the RAF--which knew full well what that little ratfrick was up to--will throw him under the bus shortly before the FSB throws him under the bus but literally

    Congrats, you figured it out.
If you look into Russian in-fighting Prigozhin is a big figure among the hardliners and he secures his position by playing up Wagner's role and being able to claim they are the only ones achieving anything.
I frankly think that's part of the reason why he is losing relevance now. The MoD and powers that be recognize his influence and seek to drag him down again.
