The Age of Turkshit is Over

Finally deciding to get a proper non-turkish shotgun for my collection. I currently have a turkish single-shot and semi-auto and need a pump anyhow.

I now need to pick between the two most common options, a Remington 870 or a Mossberg 500/590. I've shot both, like both, and have two family members shilling for them at me. I like the feel of the Remington action a bit more, but like the Mossberg's ergos better. I also will be getting one in hopes of possible modification down the road, but the aftermarket for both seems robust enough.

I shoot my shotguns a lot, but I am not a hunter. The biggest game I shoot are frozen gallon jugs with slugs. Most of the time I just shoot clays and 2 liters. I will only be looking at the 18.5" barrel versions of either, as my semi-auto is already a 20" model.

What should I get /k/? I see sales on both at the same time at the same stores, so I doubt there will be a deal on one in particular that will force my hand towards one over the other.

If you wanna shoot clays, I'd look for one of those Mossberg 500 combos that come with both the short and long barrels. Longer barrels swing better for flying targets. You can find them on sale for around $300, occasionally.

That's a good idea. I've also already wanted a rifle barrel too. The option to switch out barrels is a big deciding factor in getting one of these shotguns.

If you want to swap barrels that rules out the 590, you can't get long or rifled barrels for that. It's a one-trick-pony combat model.

The 500 & the 870 both have huge aftermarkets, there's no real difference in availability of parts.

The only reason I was mildly interested in the 590 was supposedly because the trigger guard can wear or break on the 500, but it looks like you can get a metal one for it. My brother's, for example, has a slight separation. I guess I'll just get a metal one when the polymer one shows signs of wear like his.

You gave me a weekend project.

In the near future I'll take apart two shotguns from the same price range. One American, one Turkish.

They will get poked for hardness.

Mossberg 590A1. Venerable shotgun. Don't get modern Remington.

When does "modern Remington" start? My uncle got his 870 tactical and 783 in 2019 and he's had no issues.

You can still get good Remington's that are newer its just a gamble. 2007 is the cut off year where the quality started dropping.

Alright, well that makes me wonder about bolt action rifles. Was thinking of getting a 783, but that's a whole another issue and not something I'll be getting for a much longer while. Right now I'm just waiting for a sale on shotguns and that's it.

Should I get the retrograde with the wood furniture, or the regular synthetic furniture? It's only a bit more for wood and I can get synthetic furniture later. It'd be fun to pair a wood furniture one with my model 10 like an old school police officer.

From everything I've seen and read the wood on the retrogrades is absolutely abysmal quality stuff, looks almost plastic and chips if you so much as look at it funny.
Better to go synthetic and try to track down some old wood furniture.

Ok. I'm going to go to the store tomorrow to actually see one. I'll take your word it sucks, but I'll still check it out and most likely get the synth when there's a sale.

Did the wienersucking convention get out early or something? I thought you'd be way too busy with that to post here.

Weird take. It's a pump shotgun. The vast majority of them have wooden furniture. Wood is perfectly fine when it's finished properly. Doesn't get cold in winter, or hot in summer. The poly furniture on a lotta budget guns usually feels cheap and hollow. If you want something relatively impervious to the elements (poly furniture, chrome bore, hydrodipped), a Nova/Supernova is about the only budget option.

    Mossberg is the GOAT.
    Remingshit has nose dived.
Mossberg is more pro-consumer with maintenance and parts.
Remington has welded extractor arms and various other bits of frickery.

I do like me an ice cold PBR on a Friday night. Perhaps Mossberg is the only way to go.

Benelli Supernova, don't get the pistol grip and just buy a 18.5 barrel separately.
