It is. It's lowered cold case homicides in urban areas and gunshot mics on Humvees were used to good effect in Iraq.

Many urban areas have gunshot detection systems. They're only sorta useful. They are easily confused by the echos from buildings and other impact noises like fireworks and car backfires. They can alert law enforcement of the general location of gunfire, but typically not a pinpoint location in an urban environment.

City governments literally set them up on different buildings creating a web of sensors that when their information is combined together instantly reports detected gun fire to a control center and gives attempts to give a rough location of it's origin based on its relative location as detected by different sensors via triangulation

100% i was testing one of those chinese fuel filters with subsonic 22 in my backyard, i tested 1 round on its own, it was pretty loud still. deff gunshot. 15 minutes after i wrapped up 2 cpd cops roll down my alley, i was out working in the garage, they asked me if i heard gunshots. lol

Why would people care? I shoot .22LR in the yard all the time and I'm in the suburbs of TN. I did get weird looks for executing a opossum in the yard, still no cops though. The opossum was being an butthole, I didn't shoot him for no reason

              Story for those interested
              >be me
              >hanging out in basement
              >see opossum scurry by
              >"cool, I should catch it"
              >spend the next hour chasing opossum
              >basement is a mess so it's harder than it should be
              >kids come home, have to hurry now
              >bring the cat in, he instantly knows
              >release cat, hear them fighting
              >continue the chase
              >still can't catch the bastard
              >kids starting to realize I'm up to something
              >younger brother enters the basement and starts to help
              >spend another hour trying to catch it
              >frick it, grab a .22 revolver
              >shoot around the cat and hit it in the face
              >wait a few minutes, grab it
              >still alive, which makes me incredibly sad because of the poor shot
              >take it outside and shoot it in the head with 9mm
              >put opossum in a trash bag and throw in trash
              >grab casing and head inside
              >nobody noticed the shots
              >life continues
I really didn't want to shoot him, but I can't have a wild animal running around like that. Which sucks because opossums are one of my favorite animals.

No, I shot around the cat and hit the opossum in the face. Cat is fine, but I couldn't get him away from the opossum so I had to shoot around him. That's also why my shot placement was poor and didn't kill it instantly

Would this work in heavy urban environments though?
Large buildings like flats can alter the sound pressure or even completely mask it, making triangulation a whole lot more difficult

They're called Shot Spotters, and they put them on buildings and telephone/power poles - along with cameras to triangulate and automatically send the signal to dispatch to get cops on ASAP. Sometimes you get false alarms like fireworks or loud exhaust backfiring/burbling.

They are usually installed in fixed towers in crime areas and give instant feedback to some control center. Works as long as the Black folks have not heard about subsonic ammunition and silencers. You could always do data fusion with cell towers and find out which cell phones that are statistically associated with gunfire.

The IVAS includes gunshot location, done via the pass through microphones on soldiers earpro to give a soldier a bearing on where they're receiving fire from. Going from just a bearing to a good positional fix by having the information automatically shared squad wouldn't be difficult and is almost certainly going to be done.

there are enough mics there to just use the one mast
I was making something similar for drones
Three would be better, but to be cost effective you could just use one

frickin full of shit the pilot program in my extremely ghetto county filled with morons shooting each other constantly shitcanned the idea because it couldn't differentiate between gunfire and anything else nor could it accurately triangulate any more effectively than a person calling in and saying "yea I think it came from the ghetto apartment complex next door"

I’d say they’re worth having but if your opponent knows you have them and aren’t halfway moronic they could easily make you see what they want you to see

Interesting point. Spooks fixed up those diversionary firefight firework racks in 'nam, something more advanced but similarly low tech (or far more advanced and high tech) could be employed.

Why can't you just use two?
Even if the gunshot came in while the microphones were in a line you could still determine which mic picked up the gunshot first and figure out it's vector and distance by how long it took the second mic to detect.

      Anonymous

Because you need 3 to triangulate.

2 would only work if both mics were in a straight line from the shooter. 2 can only tell you distance, not direction.

        Anonymous

No, you only need 2 for triangulation.
Point A is the cause, point B is an observer, point C is an observer.
Both observers make a straight line towards where they saw/heard/detected the cause, and where those two line meet is point A.

        Anonymous

What? No, i'm pretty sure that if you get direction from 2 points, the intersecting line is the triangulated point. Distance isn't really needed to calculate that first step. Or did I suffer a stroke in school, help me anons.

Just like GPS, wont this only be useful in massively onesided non-peer environs when both sides aren't blanketing the AO with enough microwave noise and intelligent jamming to keep your balls warm?

This. Also, consider that the USSR had enough nukes to bring about the apocalypse, while today we've seen Russia's military to be a complete joke compared to the NATO countries. We're at the point where reasonably achieving MAD requires a significantly lower level of technological advancement than being a near peer force to the US.

Jammers are not the be all and end all of electronic warfare, if you are jamming you are emitting, which means you can be traced
and on the modern battlefield, giving away your position means all but certain death

We've already seen this NOT happen with EW in Ukraine. Having a system is one thing, getting that system to the section of the line that's needed and integrating it into the killchain is another.
