The T-62 is a better tank lmao. It has better protected ammo and it has better room for upgrades.

The T-72 is inherently a very flawed tank and you can't fix those flaws without completely redesigning the hull and turret; at which point you're just making a new tank.

The T-62 was designed with a turret/gun upgrade in mind. As a basis for future designs it is superior as you aren't stuck working around the auto loader.

As your image shows bustle ammo storage is a rather high priority for any design evolution which is what the Norks did.

Any word on what front this is located at or a guess on what unit is operating this tank?
Embarrassing even by 1980s standards. Maybe them it was a DPR/LNR operated tank, Russia doesn’t seem to care to give these groups any additional resources despite formally integrating them into the military.

Russia has lost so many MTLBs and BMPs that they resorted to reactivating any intact BTR-50s remaining in their depots.
Some people are speculating if Russia is ever going to put the PT-76 into this war. For me, I’m keeping my fingers crossed for a classic SCUD.

I think it has proven unironically to be more survivable that the moronic BMP concept, even if it's still shit compared to the M113.
Upgrading them with a better/smaller engine, extra armour, and a taller troop comparment would have been better that the diminishing returns of the invesment into the BMP family.

Too bad (good?) the armor is paper thin

As in the troops ride on top of it, same shit as the bmp. They offer no chance of survival once hit by anything bigger then a 20mil round. Being a driver for one, or a passenger in any combat situation is a death sentence on the frontline.

And you cannot add a better engine, russia don't work like that. You get the same one they mass-mass produced for all the rest. And adding armor is just asking for problems with this tin can.

I'm just saying that this particular soviet shitbox would have been easier to fix than its successor in pure technical terms.
It's the same problem of the post T62 tanks with autoloader, which are less survivable than the older models due to the obsession with making them as small and cramped as possible.

              Anonymous

              >armor is paper thin
It's about the same level of protection as a M113, so it's pretty much on par with any other APC of the era.
              >And you cannot add a better engine
NAAWT TRUUUUUU. You can get a turbocharged version adding the whopping 30hp. Also pic related has the YaMZ-323 replaced with a Cummins 6 cil. There are quite a few upgrade options, but the question is , are they really wourth it.
              >adding armor is just asking for problems with this tin can
It's a bit more of a doctrinal issue. It's a basic APC/artillery tractor, so when the design came in it was believed nobody would be stupid enough to try assault enemy positions with it. Also, strangely enougg armor depends on the country that build it - Russia for instance has build the hulls with steel ranging from 14mm at the front, 10 to the side, down to 8 at the back. Bulgaria made their at 16mm on front and side, cause of ease of manufacture (turns out it's easier to weld plates that are the same thickness).
              >As in the troops ride on top of it
That's more of a russian logic thing - "the BMP blows up (having the dismount sit on top of the fuel tank wasn't that great of an idea), so the mt-lb should also blow up". In reality the crew member's most likerly to suffer casualties in a mine hit, In and Mt-Lb, are the driver and commander - that's where the big boom is happening . The reason they ride on top is because it's much easier to quickly dismount - a tactic they learned from Afghanistan and Grozny, where they suffered alot of casualties in ambushes. We've seen alot of huge booms, but also there are videos where the crew bails out after mine hits - it's all down to luck.
It's not that is a bad vehicle, it's just that they are pressing it into the wrong roles.

M113 wasn't getting holes punched into it by 7.62×39mm. The MT-LB's armour is more comparable with interwar vehicles like the Bren Gun Carrier, which wasn't so bad when it was being used as an artillery tractor miles away from the front, but left it obsolete long before the USSR collapsed.

                Anonymous

Is it armor degregation that's causing that? 14mm *should* be enough to deflect light machine guns which is why it's so common of a benchmark to begin with.

                Anonymous

It's only 14 on some of the front, sides are more like 10, and a lot of spots just 7mm.

                Anonymous

The M113 with the Al5083 it uses has about ~15mm RHAe on the sides, the MT-LB has 7mm. In other words, M2 ball from a .50 will go through the side of an MT-LB at combat while the M113 is effectively invulnerable unless it's being hit at extremely close range in a direct side on hit

                >Interior heating is just metal toob that has smaller metal toob running throug it. Bigger toob has diesel fire inside, and smaller toob gets very hot. This hot air is blown to back comparment and front (crew compartment) in just one place, drivers left foot. So Drivers left shoe is almost charring when all the rest are shivering. Heater also gathers soot and can catch on fire.

No russian unit's used 4 digits ever, and they built over 22,000 of 'em. Evne if you allocated nubmers literally by RNG, you'd get multiple 320 statistically.

Edit: Oh wait, it's a T54 or T-55. They built over 60,000 of those!

is right and you're a moron, they're not even the same model. Top is a T-55, bottom is a T-54. The 320 means it's in the 3rd company, 2nd platoon, 0 tank (commander's tank).

          Hey morons,
I was a conscript in the east german army during the late 80s, in fact only 1.5 years before the ddr ceased to exist.
These are regimental markings, not unique to a tank. Soviets and Warsaw pact armies, for all their fault, did have "standarization and consistency".

Cool, my dad was one as well, he was stationed in Halle/Leipzig and his conscription ended in October 1989. He told me how his younger brother sneaked out on his Simson to attend the nearby Montagsdemos and my grandma was sweating bullets because her two sons were standing on opposite ends of the barrel (theoretically).
He was also constantly sneaking in alcohol with help from my grandma, got a superior demoted and spent some time in the arrest cell

To expand your point, it wasted manpower, time, and resources to bring this tank back to working order from whatever stockpile it was located at. It wasted space in a workshop being brought to running order, it wasted time and spots being loaded onto/off the trailers and train carriages that brought it to the front line. The fact nobody even bothered to put any sort of Kontakt or even any sort quality of life upgrades to this thing is absurd. Imagine being assigned to an armor group that is attacking an enemy in the largest and most violent war in Europe since WWII and every single set of hands this tank passed though on its way to you never bothered upgrade and modernize it. For frick sake, nobody even bothered to slap a coat of paint on it.
Part of me thinks it isn’t simple laziness or general Russian apathy but rather intentional disregard by someone in command somewhere. Purposeful malpractice by the hands of someone because they either don’t like this particular crew or unit. We’ve already seen Russian favoritism at play where men and units are sent to die in suicide attacks or have ammo and resources withheld.
Yet despite all this, they will still march forward as Russia’s war machine greased by the blood of millions.

Funnily enough I remember some guy at Wargame doing this in a compstomp, he sent all these T-62s and variants in mass "to keep the pressure on" against the AI he eventually lost them all and ragequit, that was the moment I knew zerg rushing can only take you so far, as things stand russian have taken the equivalent of one average district since the begining of the year.

A logi truck and four AT missile carriers can do a HELL of a lot more to a massed unsupported tank attack then one thinks.

It seems to be the case, the only reason why this is still running is due how many "points" russians still have to keep literal noob (ai) spam tactics.

And unironically I have defeated these overwhelming numbers by choke-pointing them into urban areas, even if they managed to dislodge me from one sector I would pull back after farming points, it eventually comes to the situation we are seeing here, the AI is just sending trash units, the turning moment is eventually achieved when I got a large enough operational airforce and no AA or bombardment to fear of while managing to cut spawning points.

So yeah, airforce, EU ramps up production, cut Crimea Bridges and HIMARs trains and we are back on action.

Do we have any idea on the kinds of stocks Russia might have in the IS series? Presumably almost no IS-2s/3s, but it's concievable they might have a couple hundred T-10s laying around some lot in Siberia, maybe enough parts between them to put together a battalion of 40-50 tanks.
I don't know if you can realistically go any further back than that, though, unless you start bringing in T-34-85s from North Korean stockpiles

            >T-10
That would be sick to see. And also, they have a good armor pattern as long as you are not talking about modern anti-tank munitions (which are equally effective against all Russian tanks, so they are an equalizer in that way). Bradley's 25mm would be not very effective, for example.

    NO ERA PENAL

  42. 1 month ago
    Anonymous

You guys are all spastic morons. ERA is not even helpful, as it has been shown, and the T-62 at the very least is still a 115mm cannon on tracks, which is obviously useful to have on your side. A javelin will kill a T-90 and a T-62 exactly the same. Also remember tanks like the Leopard 1, which granted has a better cannon (for anti-tank use, but worse for anti-infantry and anti-structure use which is actually the majority of tank fire) and also has the "no armor is best armor" design strategy.

      Anonymous

Sure, one rather have a 115 that drags itself through mud rather than one that needs more effort. However there are not irrelevant soft factors, like crew comfort, reliability, connectivity/communications, visibility, and so on.

        Anonymous

Certainly those are all terrible in Ru tanks and actually extremely important for effectiveness- optics and communication especially. We've all seen instances of these tanks crushing their own soldiers and missing shots at close range. But redditors like to pretend that an Abrams is invincible while a T-62 has no use. Final thing I'll say is that the quality of a tank is only potential effectiveness, which requires skilled crew to realize. Without skilled crew and command the tank, no matter how good, will actually be ineffective. Most tank losses are from artillery, mines, and mobility kill (run out of fuel, lose a track, etc.). Most tank kills are against defensive positions and infantry, not other tanks.
