They just announced so I don't know all the details yet. But will also send artillery system Archer B(not mention how many but could be up to 12, I think we have 20ish of those how aren't used by our forces)

Heard the Archer contract didn't get picked up by foreign nations so Sweden just took the delivery of the rest of the vehicles. Maybe it'll be time for Archer to shine for export sales like Caesar and HIMARS after seeing them in action?

Hopefully it does but we will see, this will really be good test of Stridsfordon 90 and Archer in real combat. If they're good, going to be great exports.

Switzerland was interested in it recently with a MAN truck variant. Norway bailed on buying them just in time for Sweden to upsize its military.

                Anonymous

I'm in two minds as to what this war has shown regarding wheeled SPGs. On the one hand extended range projectiles mean you don't need the level of protection of a tracked SPG and lorry-based systems are more strategically mobile. However, especially in winter their tactical mobility is limited.
Maybe the right answer is a small number of wheeled for precision fire/support for motorised units and larger numbers of tracked SPGs or 120mm mortar systems for direct support of mechanised elements.

                Anonymous

Archer makes more sense than a tracked variant in Sweden due to operational range + thick wilderness creating fog of war. In Sweden, artillery is basically spending its time shoot/scooting to evade artillery radar and nothing else. Hence Archer is super fast at just that.

Sweden has at least one on loan to the US for evaluation.
The truck version is due to the Volvo chassi no longer being in production.

                Anonymous

Yep. Shame as the dumper concept is probably the best compromise in terms of wheeled/tracked SPG. The commercial use of the A40 also means that maintenance is both cheap and straight forward (Volvo is the largest supplier of heavy commercial vehicles in the world afaik). Tactical mobility is better than a truck, but still has the same advantages in terms of road speed.

Literally first time ive ever heard about this thing. As i understand from wiki its at least a "modern and decent IFV" and they've actually built 1,280 of these, operated in northern countries - finland, denmark, sweden, estonia etc.

Probably will have good flotation for muddy terrain. Infinitely better ergonomics than the BMP-1/2. Don't know how good the tracks are for dealing with mud given the Ukrainians have a fetish for making their tracks more mud resistant. See: T-64 vs T-72 and T-80 roadwheels and open track design.

Awesome. Wonderful to see these vehicles finally get to do what they were designed for.

Best Cold War IFV, upgrades keep them competitive up to today. Blunders in modern IFV projects mean the CV90 is a reliable option for anyone looking for a proven vehicle.
Good armor with 30mm AFSDS protection, good mobility, sizeable 40mm gun capable of frontally penetrating all Russian IFVs in service, side penetration of MBTs with APFSDS at near ranges, air burst against infantry. Decent C3, optics, etc.

They might have hoped that Russia would realize their mistake and back down, but since Russians are dumb and Putin have some issues, they now realize that will not happen. So to not have this bloody war go on forever they will give Ukraine what they need.

        >1 Patriot battery
One small tweak here, only one is being installed on Ukrainian clay right at this moment. At least two more are being installed on Polish clay on the Ukie border.

Also, Patriot system_s_ plural are being sent to Ukraine. There are at least two more yet to be shipped. There's some very tight OpSec surrounding Patriot batteries, including how many Ukies have already been trained on them and how many are getting training in several countries as we speak.

The decision was made to send Patriot batteries to Ukraine. There is no upper limit on how many will be sent. More and more will arrive as trained crews & other logistics are solved. These are permanent gifts that will be maintained and provide security for decades to come.

Invading sweden would unironically be a three day operation at this point if only they shared a border with russia. Their army is like 20k mercenary force of professional soldiers, no conscription for decade now and basically no artillery since they only have 48 archers and some mortars.

I'm pretty confident the military would look quite different if they did share a border anon, so it's kind of a moot point.

Too bad that's not how it works in the real world and geography means everything. If you even somehow get past Finland you have to walk through an inclined, hilly, river-seperated, mostly forested chokepoint-land for over 1000km.
Naturally, Finland and Sweden working in lockstep like god intended since the medieval ages completely prevents this. In the cold war, it didn't, hence the army went full on total defense.
Nowadays, just bombing their boats and deploying our modern subs would be enough.

Naturally, Finland and Sweden working in lockstep like god intended since the medieval ages completely prevents this. In the cold war, it didn't, hence the army went full on total defense.
Nowadays, just bombing their boats and deploying our modern subs would be enough.

There is absolutely 0 sense in invading Finland and Sweden. The only option is launching cruise missiles to power grid and military plants while sitting in defence

It's not really Saab's fault, small countries like Sweden just can't keep up with the jet arms race. They had some pretty serious budget constraints compared to Lockheed Martin.

Although the Ukrainians have asked for Gripens repeatedly. They may just outright buy them from Sweden even.

There was an assessment made during the Crimean crisis that Sweden could last about 2 weeks against Russia. it was said that mass launches of missiles and air strikes would overwhelm the Swedish air force and air defence, giving Russia time to take over airfields and ports where it could airlift and ferry in troops for the land warfare.
That made the alarm bells go off in Stockholm and since then the military budget has doubled and conscription reintroduced.
The assessment now is likely that Russia could not invade Sweden at all, given how terribly Russia has underperformed, how they have wasted their strategic missile stockpiles and how the airborne troops have been more or less exterminated thanks to moronic Russian tactics and how the Russian air force mostly only seems to exist on paper.

      Anonymous

The 2 week defense was based on lack of logistics so the army was making the point that since sweden had disbanded most of it's logistics they couldn't bring supplies to the front line so they'd only last for 2 weeks with their current supply. That is still true but I guess now they're working on it. Slowly.

These archers look like some actual wunderwaffe alright. Considering how artillery duels are the base of the war now, there is no way Russia and their shitty WW2 era cannons being pulled by trucks can counter this. I can see Russia pushed back even out of Crimea by march.

It should be mentioned that the Archer is made to prance about around impassable forest through roads, dodging anti-artillery radar pings before counterfire can pin it.
The low visibility of the Swedish terrain won't be here, but you could make a case for raspubreastsa replicating the impassable off-road terrain at least.

I hate Swedish Vehicle naming So fricking much

STRV 81, Centurion Mk 3 with 20 pdr gun
8 being the caliber of the gun 84 MM (8) and 1 being the first vehicle with an 8 cm gun

    STRV 101, Centurion mk 10 with L7 105mm gun
10(cm)1 for being the first vehicle with a 10cm gun

    STRV 102, STRV81 up gunned to 105mm

    STRV 103, the Wedge

    STRV 101R Upgraded 101
    STRV 102R upgraded 102
STRV 104, Upgraded STRV 102 that received a different engine

Then we get to their more modern shit

    STRV 121, Leo 2A4
    STRV 122, Leo 2a5 (Basically)
But then for what ever god dam reason instead of getting 123,124,125 we get

    STRV 122A, 122B, 122C, 122D

Same with the CV9040, which should be CV9041 according to their own naming convention (year 1990, Caliber 4cm, 1st vehicle with the 40mm)

      >Same with the CV9040, which should be CV9041 according to their own naming convention
CV9040 is the marketing name of the manufacturer, not the armed forces designation.

Strf90 is not a tank, therefore doesn't follow the same naming convention as tanks, just as the BMP in Swedish service is named the PBV501, not PBV71, and the PBV302 isn't named the PBV22.
      >But then for what ever god dam reason
De-autisming the naming conventions in the 90s, and making it more compatible and understandable from a international perspective, as more and more standards within the armed forces switched to be compatible with NATO standards anyway.

So now NATO are sending their latest most modern weapons. It is truly a full fledged NATO army being assembled in Ukraine to fight Russia. This just makes Russia's victory even sweeter when all the NATO toys are captured. Russia will be richer and more powerful than ever before.

It can take out a t72 from the side or rear with a little luck, depending on distance, addon armor and whatever. Absolutely murders any of their lighter vehicles. It's greatest strength in this conflict will probably be against entrenched infantry though, since they're getting the C variant with support for programmable airburst rounds.
No missiles, so serious AT duty will have to be performed by dismounted infantry with ATGMs. It has a big ceiling hatch in the back, so you could fire a javelin out of the fighting compartment while standing without much issue (taking care not to Abu Hajar your mates).

One of the core requirements for the CV90 was to be able to penetrate the sides of 80's soviet tanks. This was met with the 40mm and new APFSDS rounds.
You'll have a hard time killing an MBT from the front with it, but both the APFSDS and the HE will damage sights, guns and whatnot
