Suppressors

Help me to understand the hype around suppressors. They're cool, but do they really do anything to make a gun significantly better, especially if shooting the gun with ammo that's not subsonic? It seems like a lot of money to pay for the suppressor and stamp when it seems like the baffles wear out quickly (relative to, say, the life of the gun itself). It also adds a lot of length to the gun, making it more unwieldy. I also hear a lot of suppressor people talk about frustrating it is to have to tune a gun to use a suppressor, or how some guns just shoot gas and unspent powder back into your face when equipped with a suppressor. Overall, it doesn't seem like they're worth the money, but it also seems like some people consider them to be as important as the gun, similar to what people say about the optic on a gun.

I'm not looking to shit on suppressors, I just don't understand.

No, I spent thousands of dollars on cans just for looks. What the fuck do you think?

No, I prioritise my dad's pleasure and make sure he cums instead. How about you?

Huge quality of life benefits for noise and concussion.
Comes with significant downsides such as cost and gas blowback.
They are by no means a requirement unless you really embrace the Modern Minuteman role, in which case the signature reduction is very helpful.

There's a point where worn hearing protection meets serious diminishing returns. Eventually the sound of the rifle vibrates your skeleton enough to cause very slow hearing damage over time even if you're doubled up with earmuffs and earplugs. Suppressors make the gun quieter, meaning bone conduction of sound is not a concern anymore. Also let's you skip a layer of worn protection in the first place.

For combat, they make it more difficult for an enemy to determine your position in addition to the safety benefits.

      >vibrate your skeleton
After a certain point, it’s your whole body. Sound will just travel your body as a whole. But we’re talking REAL fucking loud shit.

It lowers sound ratings 20db or more.
If you normally double up hearing protection (you should) you don't have to. If you shoot unprotected (say, hunting in an open area; or in a self defense situation) you're effectively wearing single earpro.

The complaints and hyperoptimizing are mostly terminally online drama. Read a guide, buy something nice and enjoy.

    Trad suppressors:
    Pros:
    - minimal flash signature
    - quiet
    - cheaper than flow throughs
    Cons:
    - gas in the face
    - harder to tune
    - extremely dirty

    Flow through suppressors:
    Pros:
    - quiet
    - reduced concussion
    - similar benefits of a trad suppressor
    - not as dirty, gas is blown out the front
    Cons:
    - not as good flash reduction as trad
    - expensive
    - less quiet than a trad suppressor

I have a 11.5 sbr in 5.56 and use it for home protection. I won't thow on earpro when I'm half awake and someone is breaking into my home. It's still loud but 20-30db 8s a lot.

Suppressors have many applications, but all serve a common goal. They make shooting MUCH easier and more pleasant. In some cases, they make the use of some small arms realistic when otherwise they would be a bad option.

    >ar pistol for home defense. Without a suppressor you will be making yourself deaf.
    >varmint hunting with a 223 bolt gun. You can plink all day and have fun. Same goes for a .22 you wont need ear pro with the correct setup
    >military/police duty weapons. Rifles may be deployed within a vehicle, in the field, then indoors and need to be manageable for the user. Recoil/report mitigation makes the weapon more effective (if you shoot a lot youll know).

On a 9mm they are a lot of fun they just make shooting twice as enjoyable. No reason not to run one besides size/weight/holster options.

And yes some gas systems need to be tweaked and some ammo wont run right. Thats up to the shooter to figure out what their setup needs to be.

But yes the cost and wait time for a suppressor is a huge scam.

You’ve stated it perfectly. Suppressors in almost all cases are counter productive and generally make your gun worse in every way. It’s just what the fad is at the moment so people can feel like they’re special forces/John wick. In 5 years people will have moved on and will all agree that suppressors suck and are gay. But for now the goal posts are in the part of the field where suppressors are essential for your rifle even though they serve 0 purpose

you probably post pictures of your $5000 AR to flex on the poors, but never post groups

Quite the non sequitur, don't you think? In civilian use, cans are pointless except possibly on nightstand guns where the assumption is that you may not have time to put on earpro or shooting at some place where one might help keep peace with the neighbours. If you shoot for groups you shoot at a range where you're going to have ears on anyway, making the suppressor pointless.

The exact opposite. I prefer my guns light, compact, easy to handle and easy to clean. A suppressor makes all of the above much worse.

    >seems like the baffles wear out quickly
    They don't.

They make the gun a lot more quieter. Even if you still need earpro the gun is more pleasant to shoot. If you're hunting it's a massive advantage. Without a suppressor you get one shot and the game scatters. With a suppressor you can get multiple hogs before they figure out what's going on. It's also a great way to shoot a lot without pissing off your neighbors. I've had zero frustration with mine.

    >muh problems with gas in the face
Some people make poor purchase decisions and don't have their guns set up correctly. This is user error. Are ARs and glocks bad because some people assemble them improperly with the wrong combinations of parts?

I keep one on my bedside rifle so I don’t have to fuck with earmuffs if I hear someone kick in the door. It’s still loud but not instantly deafening like 5.56 normally is. I’ve fired a handful of suppressed rounds without hearing protection and know I can tolerate it. I would NEVER fire an unsuppressed AR without hearing protection. Even with muffs + plugs it’s still concussively loud.

You're not alone, suppressors have more cons than pros; increased length, increased weight, shifted point of gravity towards the front, more gunk in the action, increased price, increased wear and tear, (where applicable) needing to be added on a government registry, etc. And the pros are... the gun is slightly more quiet, but you still need earpro. Yay.

they make something that damaged your hearing even if you wore hearing protection and make it something that doesn't damage your hearing anymore.
    >t. has permanent hearing damage with diligent use of hearing protection at age 30.
if that isn't a big deal to you, you are stupid. it's also a very good argument for multi-caliber can(s).

Removes muzzle flash, reduces concussion and noise, if subsonic even more so
I would say suppressors make a lot more sense on SBRs or bullpups than a 16" AR and ofc suppressors are cool
Probably makes sense to suppress hunting rifles if you're going to hunt a lot of animals sequentially i.e. boar or whatever
I think it's hard to justify suppressing pistols since you can't carry one easily but again it's just cool
