it’s an american tank
of course it will be automatic
>easier to drive
ahhhhhh
its not easier it’s just that it becomes automatic for the driver >roll starting a tank >yeah just roll this 60 ton thing >don’t worry about it
also if 24V doesn’t work to the point the APU can’t help you start, not being to start the engine is far from the only concern you will have
>easier to drive
except its not. Even in the world of race cars the less you have the driver needing to take care of, the more he will be able to focus on going fast and keeping the car together (his mission)
Only reason you still see sequential manual in racing still is cause the drivers train to have millisecond reaction times and demand that of the vehicle.
You dont need millisecond reaction time from a fricking tank transmission and its less that you have to teach privates going through tanker school. Let the drivers focus on their mission and not about being in the optimal rpm range and gear.
Yes there is, it's easier to drive, easier to fix, and you can roll start it
I drive a manual, I don't think it'd be easier to train troops to drive manual over automatic. It seems like the logical logistical choice is to choose the system that's easier to use. Does a tank automatic transmission work analogously to a car's?
AHHHHHHH THE UKRAINE WAR ISNT GOING WELL I MUST POST THREADS ABOUT AMERICAN TANKS BEING SHIT REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE THAT WILL MAKE ME FEEL BETTER REEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
>It spins, it will roll
No, it won't. Gas turbines have a specific startup sequence to come to an even operating temperature without hot spots that would destroy them. Also any vehicle that can get a 65t tank to roll can also be used for a sympathetic start.
it's due to the engine moron not for the transmission
Autos are too slow to accelerate, also it enables morons to drive

yeah no shit you are comparing an ev to a conventional veichle. the reason why ev are so fast is due to the eletric engine being able to deliver all of his torque instnatly not because they are automatic (they usually are single-speed transmission).

why do tanks even have transmissions? why arnt they a diesel hybrid? that seems like the best choice. im sure the electrical motors and shit dont may much more or take up more space than a fricking tank transmission
The Abrams X that was revealed a bit ago is actually diesel-electric. The issue is that everyone right now is coasting off of 80's designs, the new generation of tanks will fix that. Unless you're Russia who can't even design a reliable new regular-ass diesel for the Armata.
The problem has always been that they are more complex (and field maintenance has always been a massive thing). Also, there will be bit of power loss from the conversion, but thats probably not a big deal today.
I drive huge trucks for a living.
Modern automatics are better in literally every way because they still allow you to manually shift using buttons which tell the computer to gear up/down.
I can have all the benefits of a standard in terms of dealing with hills and edge cases, predictive driving, etc - but I also reap the benefits of being lazy, such as better fuel economy.
sorry PrepHole, there’s no benefit to a manual transmission on a military vehicle

It's more fun and shift speed doesn't matter cause you downshift heel and toeing anyway as you are braking in for the apex.
