Su-34 in Ukraine

What’s going with this plane in Ukraine? It was used un Syria so Russia SHOULD have something other than dumb rockets. This is a specialized ground attack aircraft, so it should be flying with bombs — what is the Russian JDAM equivalent?

        yes, but not in quantity

the whole problem is yes, Russia does have stuff almost (not quite) near to what NATO has, but in wunderwaffen numbers, or less, so they might as well not have any, it's pointless

KAB bombs, but they're shittier and they probably don't have many

Islamists had no answer to high-altitude planes, while Okraina has AWACS and other intel to first warn them of a plane appproaching, then they have the whole spectrum of AA available to counter it. Flying above the enemy like they did in Syria is tantamount to suicide.
    >what is the Russian JDAM equivalent?
There is no direct equivalent. While they have guided bombs (KAB), they never dressed up dumb bombs into guided ones to the best of my knowledge. They chose a cheaper and a bit less precise route and installed ballistic computers connected to GLONASS/GPS to drop their dumb munitions.

On paper, Russians have laser and GNSS guided bombs, but these are fairly rare even in Syria. They cope on media about how they have a 'computer', namely a regular CCRP system, that allows them to drop dumb bombs accurately.

That dropping munitions with a bombsight is ancient technology, hooking it up to read a sat coordinate system is trivial, and that you still end up with a massive CEP because dropping dumb bombs has a lot of variables that the bomb sight can't control for, so it's an elegant solution insofar that morons like yourself assume it's good enough while it fails to perform in the real world. Quite like the famous space pen vs glorious Russian pencil meme that falls apart if you think about it for a minute and has the punchline of the USSR buying US space pens in the end.

I know hohol IQ is a meme at this point, but let me spell it out for you.
It's an elegant solution insofar as you want to keep costs relatively low and still achieve a result. Instead of outfitting every bomb with a glide kit, you have the delivery plane that you can use over and over again.
You're the one creating a false equivalence with the pen and pencil story.

And the point is that coping that a bombsight is JAST AS GUD is quite moronic because it turns out the cost of the plane, flight hours, and associated risks with trying to be accurate by relying on WWII tech + a Garmin's lovechild to be accurate is far more expensive then just dropping a JDAM from high altitude and letting it do the work while also having the nice benefit of ensuring that you actually kill your target and not the building next door of civilians.

thus it is exactly analogous to the space pen and the pencil story anon alluded to: brainless vatniks are satisfied with their cheap, low-tech, marginally-effective solution, and remain blindingly oblivious to the fact that they're decades behind in effectiveness.

If you knew what you are talking about you would realise that computerized bombsights are very inaccurate compared to actual guided munitions. RuAF flew with semi-active AAMs and unguided bombs, including cluster bombs in Syria not because they have some tricks available, but because that's all they have.

                >realise that computerized bombsights are very inaccurate compared to actual guided munitions.
Another thing is time aircraft need to be in the SAM kill zone. CCRP release demands from bomber to fly straight course into specific release point. While with JDAM release area is like 30*30kms, no demands for straight course, aircraft can drop during manuever (for example zooming from low altitude to release altitude). It's 10 times difference been exposed to SAM.

        >What’s going with this plane in Ukraine?
Ukrainian airspace is heavily defended and a very high threat environment for both sides. Aircraft are used sparingly because of this reason. The last time a western air force operated in such an environment was in Vietnam. The only viable option for both sides is to fly low and fast but that is not without risks given the prevalence of portable anti-air missiles.

Russia has never had a large stockpile of laser guided bombs because they are very expensive. We must remember that the Russian defense budget is <10% of what the USA spends annually. Blowing $100K on a single precision guided bomb is not an effective use of resources in their situation. I think the war in Ukraine has changed that calculus.

If we take the cost analysis a bit further, a single SU-34 costs about $35M. For that price you can buy 10-12 Iskander missiles that cost $3M a piece.

Turns out non stealth ground attack planes are fricking worthless vs enemy with a functional AA network and MANPADS everywhere.

      Anonymous

Iraq had spent lavishly on its military before the Gulf War and had pretty sophisticated AA. The US was still able to rape their air defenses.

Israel has carried out thousands of sorties through Russian AA systems in Syria with non-stealth airframes.

What you need is good intelligence, precision standoff weapons, and food coordination. Also trained, flexible pilots.

Russia, it turned out, had none of these in adequate supply.

Obviously if NATO is on the border of the conflict zone it would be extremely helpful to have stealth aircraft, but they haven't even used their existing systems well. Interviews with pilots shot down early in the war show that pilots:

      >Were told not to worry about AA or other fighters. They wouldn't be doing anything.
      >Had very little training on what to do if these things were a problem.
      >Were in no way coordinating to take out AA systems first.

I mean, they had a guy shot down in an Su-35 flying fricking recon.

Also, your long range missiles need to hit the targets to eliminate them.

Compare this the rate at which US forces destroyed AA assets in the Gulf of the extremely clever ways Israel uses the terrain and signals noise, or sometimes espionage and subterfuge to carry out their raids.

The Israeli solution is much more low budget but requires good pilots. You can't raid a giant military base and blow up a shit ton of MiGs with a commercial airliner showing up by total surprise unless you have someone with the hours and skill to have flow the two Boeing 707s less than 100 feet off the deck on the way in to avoid detection.

Likewise, you need good planning to spoof Egyptian signals and have fluent Arabic speaking pilots to pretend to be lost Arabs so that you can then dive in low and skim 50 feet over the desert to blow up Saddam's nuclear reactor.

If your pilots get no seat time, these antics just end in crashes.
