mot likely the moronic russian pilot forget that the su-27 wingspan is 15m and hit the propeller wile accelerating to put the wing in front of the mq-9(remember that he was dumping fuel and the fuel dumper is on the wing).

dumping fuel worked, thats what broke the propeller

even rain can damage a propeller

      Anonymous

I'd fly over it and make the jet heat melt the propeller or wings. They were probably trying to ignite it with the jet flame after dumping fuel on it. Is that possible or would the fuel dry up/blow off before they could light it up? Seems like it's worth a try to douse then ignite, but burning a wing or propeller would definitely work. Even burning out the camera/sensor base.

dumping fuel worked, thats what broke the propeller

even rain can damage a propeller

Why dump fuel? How is that better than just shooting it down? They're both intentional acts to destroy it.

      https://i.imgur.com/xH81D72.png

And why would they lie about a drone being shot down in favor of claiming it was a collision? A shootdown in international airspace would be a much bigger deal than a collision that the Russians can simply downplay as "accidental" or say that it was actually the reaper pilot that caused it.

The US might not want to accelerate things with Russia. I remember in either Vietnam or Korea there was a US fighter pilot who shot down several Soviet fighters (despite the Soviets not officially being involved in the war), but the US kept it classified for decades because they were worried that it might make things worse

Either he thought that simply being doused in AvGas would somehow damage the drone OR he was trying to avoid a collision and wanted to lighten the jet to maneuver more effectively.

            > But a Su-27 has a lot better ways to accomplish that.

            Not without starting a war.

It’s basically Russia doing everything possible to disrupt the drone without firing a weapon and committing an act of aggression - they are trying to have their cake and eat it too. Dumping fuel and buzzing/clipping the drone can be both handwaved by Russian authority as harassment and not a serious gesture of aggression, but played to their population as “XAXAXA POCCNYR STRONK”. Hence the official press release of “we dindu nuffin” alongside a set of low budget wojack memes. Russia is scared to open fire on US assets, so they rely on the “ITS JUST A PRANK BRO!” style of air combat.

says or he's trying to dump weight, or it's just some other obscure reason I admit that I don't know. Whether or not I'm moronic, the pilot of the plane definitely is, risking his own aircraft and life for the possibility of knocking down an expendable unmanned vehicle which would be easier to just shoot down with the gun.

                >camera turns off during the "collision"
                convenient

That camera issue is the satellite dish inside losing a good feed to the actual satellite in space.
It routinely happens during a hard turn, or very heavy winds.
Anything that shifts the aircraft quickly will cause it to lose signal for a bit, and the program will follow the last command until connection is reestablished.
I imagine it would also lose tracking if the aircraft was hit. Personally don't know that one - never got hit, myself.

The first camera fuzz was because there was an aircraft above it, and it lost a good signal to the satellite.
The second one was very similar to the sudden stop during a hard turn, like a loiter that's too small.

lol wouldnt the drone pitch up or down getting hit??

                yet it does nothing> explain

That thing is surprisingly stable due to having frickmassive wings. Most aircraft have wings shorter than the aircraft is long. MQ series have wings almost twice as long as the aircraft.
It still looks like it has a wobble in the shot, even if it stops short to circle the prop in red like no one could see it.

                >t. Actual army MQ-7 operator. (Not MQ-9 - that's Air Force. They got the newer version, those pricks.)

Even if they're made in Russia, military jet planes are pretty resistant, especially the wings.
For example, in the 1998 Cavalese disaster where twenty people were killed when a United States Marine Corps EA-6B Prowler aircraft cut a cable supporting a cable car of an aerial lift.

Picrel is the aftermath, the plane even managed to fly back to base.

Believe it or not, and this may come as a shock to you, the military often gets things wrong. Information may not have been passed up the chain correctly. It may not have passed ALL the way up the chain, since that is primarily a presidential matter. It may have been discounted as inaccurate, or disbelieved due to how crazy an idea it was considered. Why in the world would Japan bring the US into a Pacific war when there were still chances it might otherwise sit out? We may not have cracked the codes at that point.

      Upgraded versions.
      >Su-27: Original edition, single seat, fighter
      >Su-30: Two-seat fighter/export edition
      >Su-34: Barely the same plane, heavily modified to attack ground targets like tanks instead of other planes. Two people sit side-by-side, has a microwave and a 'toilet' that is basically a pipe you piss in
      >Su-33: Carrier version - bigger wings, stronger gear, air-to-air refueling, single seat
      >Su-35: Modern version, has thrust vectoring, multi-role instead of just being a fighter, single seat
      >Su-37: Experimental plane to make sure thrust vectoring is a good idea

I'd fly over it and make the jet heat melt the propeller or wings. They were probably trying to ignite it with the jet flame after dumping fuel on it. Is that possible or would the fuel dry up/blow off before they could light it up? Seems like it's worth a try to douse then ignite, but burning a wing or propeller would definitely work. Even burning out the camera/sensor base.

So now that the dust has settled and brown people have lost their interest in raiding, what will be the repercussions? Russians intended to harass the drone and prevent it from doing its mission then bumbled and rammed it, taking down aircraft in international airspace is unsurprisingly not cool with a lot of countries. CAP flights for black sea drones now?

      Anonymous

Escort for drones sort of defeats the purpose, I'd think. Probably already a replacement flying the same patrol - It's a reaper, they aren't disposable, but they are replaceable.

Considering it's Russia lashing out the only way they can without starting actual hostilities, I'd say stay the course and keep supplying Ukraine with gear because it's clearly working. On a related note, are there any pics of anything yet?

      Anonymous

      >CAP flights for black sea drones now?
Unlikely, for now. Puccia will not risk repeating this incident. They like to act tough but that was risky and they could have lost one of their jets. Also, just think about this:

Total Aid to Ukraine (US+EU): 73bn+55bn=128bn
      One (1) MQ-9 reaper: 0.0169bn
Estimated Military Costs For Russia: 900mil/day*386days=347.4bn
      Or 53.25x MQ-9s / day, 20556x MQ-9s total

Just sit back and enjoy the fact that for every 1$ """wasted""" in Ukraine, mighty rossyia is paying 2.71$. That is a yearly ROI of 171%!

      Truly a /kbiz/ moment.

      >what will be the repercussions?

I don't think the western powers want to step up their involvement with the conflict and therefore won't. and I don't think the Russians seriously want to bait them into escalating either. Austin and Shoigu apparently even had their first phone conversation since the invasion over this. I assume it'll just be written off as a $24m shenanigan (which apparently America is quite capable of doing) and we won't see any change to RoE on either side. just a spot of international geopolitical banter really

Pretty easy. Just go as slow as they can with reasonable control, come up behind and put the missile launcher on the wingtip into the prop to frick it up. Drone now has no thrust. Pass in front of it to induce vortex turbulence, throwing it out of control. During the prop destruction maybe some damage to elevators.. So it won't glide nearly as far as optimal.
