    >“While it seems pretty goofy, they seem to be trying to do the best they can to up-armor the planes that are otherwise sitting ducks. Whether it works depends on what the warhead is on the missile/drone," said Steffan Watkins, an open-source research consultant who tracks aircraft and ships, adding that the tires could be used to stop fragmentation of an airburst above the plane from piercing the aircraft.

This ones also parked in the middle of a fucking runway for some reason, assuming it was actually being moved when this was pictured?

I guess the comment above would be right, last ditch effort on hoping the tires eat some air burst fragments instead of punching through the frame, but doesn't even seem worth the effort.

      >There has to be some other explanation here. Even Russia can't be this dumb.

Putin freaks out and yells at Gerimosov and Shiogu to do something about this at once. they then yell at the generals. Who then yell at their air commander. He's given no tools, nothing, but has to fix it. He gets creative.

Yes a single cheap Chinese UAV armed with a molotov cocktail would set off a fire that would ruin a beautiful multi-million dollar aircraft.

haha oh my god. Are they actually saying that.
It's just makings the jets insanely easy to spot because the tires just eat up the em and the jets frame exists so there's a giant radar or fr or photo count you couldn't make easier because the shape is literally painted in with black.

It's like Microsoft bucket with a black outline on a frame that has a white color on a white page and you literally fill it in with black and gibs it a red outline

I cejy believe Russians. All the Ukrainians have to do to ruin those planes now is drop high intensity tiny flares and start a tire fire.
Why would they put something that flammable ontop of planes. The tires boring down on the planes would ruin them because they steel mesh in the rubber which melts at low temp to prevent shrapnel

This is the dumbest shit I have ever seen any military ever do. I mean ever. I mean fuck tires. You can leave them side ways stacked up on metal in the sun dammit they fucking bleed off.
        DAMMIT I JUST REALIZED IT.

the only reasonable explanation I have heard is that it is to help weigh down the aircraft as the engines aren't installed. you can see a tarp on the engines I think. essentially lighter plane = more damaged by high wind or whatever but idk. just something I read.

      Anonymous

Oh, that sounds actually sensible, and it looks like some of the engines are missing.

Well, another problem that could be solved by having a hangar, but I'm no expert on Russian plane maintenance.

What’s your iq? Close to 80? Planes land at 130 mph. They have exceptional break systems. On top of that you put fucking wedges in the wheels to stop them from rolling. You don’t stack tires on top of them. Especially since it would be easier to put the tires in the plane to weigh it down. The influx of retarded turdies is literal cancer killing this site.

giant wings with high lift and no weight = wobbly = damages itself.

Piss poor explanation, that wing is rated likely for +3g or more. In flight, the wing spars hold up the entire weight of the aircraft at the bare minimum, you think wind would damage that? That you even think this tells me you're fucktarded.

      >the only reasonable explanation I have heard is that it is to help weigh down the aircraft as the engines aren't installed
ah yes, it says so right here in the manual:
      >...to keep the airframe from warping after removing the engines, preload it by covering the aircraft in car tires...

they seem to claim that without engines in a storm the plane could be wobbled by wind gusts

It's changing the radar (X-band SAR from
the commercial microsatellites in this case) returns (obviously, given the change in the surface geometry and the material), which will make it a bit more annoying for automated detection systems to identify what's what, but given that they're lighting up like a christmas tree instead of hiding them I don't think it's going to pose a problem, especially when other types of sensors will spot them quite easily. They seem to also be doing it with Tu-160s funnily enough.

      >muh SAR detection and identification

This seems like a red herring. It's pretty naive to think that Ukraine doesn't have a few dudes around the vicinity of these air bases they've been hitting that just do basic plain clothes recon.

        Anonymous

More like it's pretty retarded to think that Langley isn't able to just have a few analysts work overtime to look over sat pictures manually while they program an algorythm able to see through this clownshow attempt.

          Anonymous

None of the strikes we've seen seem to have been so sophisticated that they needed to get a third party in the US involved. It's already well known that Ukraine is purchasing shitloads of satellite images every day after all.

        Anonymous

No, it's not a red herring, like I said there are other sensors that will spot them quite easily, SAR is just helpful for when there's heavy cloud cover, and like the image in my post shows, all it does is change the radar return so it looks different from what is expected, but it changes it so it shows up even better than without the tires so an analyst going over the SAR imagery will not really struggle to spot them and the algorithm could likely be easily tweaked to better spot them, or at least to mark these bright spots as objects of interest so the analyst doesn't even have to look around for them.

          Anonymous

          (me)
I should specify I'm not saying this effect on SAR imagery is intentional, I think it's likely done to shield the vulnerable fuel tanks from shrapnel, maybe they saw the cardboard box plane-based munition test and went
          >WE NEED TO DEFEND AGAINST THESE! SERGEY COME UP WITH A METHOD TO PROTECT PLANE FROM THEM NOW!
and this is the best FAS-afflicted Sergey could come up with.

Those ziggas will do everything but the very obvious solution of building a fucking hangar. There, it literally solves all your satellite recon and drone attack problems. Just pour some fucking concrete and add some metal panels on top. How are vatnigs even real? Nobody can be this retarded.

Apparently the tires are a stopgap measure while permanent shelters are being constructed. So the airfield commander took initiative to try and mitigate the risk while shelters are being built and that’s hilarious to PrepHole for some reason. Are initiative and agency bad traits? I don’t get it.

      Anonymous

The stopgap does nothing, and might even make the problem worse when inevitably the tires catch on fire from an incendiary warhead. Initiative is a good thing only when the ideas implemented aren't retarded.
