Stolen Valor Queen

Currently serving anons, veterans, and LARPers of /k/: I present to you, the Queen of Stolen Valor

>There is no record of Cavanaugh ever serving in the U.S. military. She did, however, work as a licensed social worker for the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Providence.
>It was through the job that she gained access to documents, personal information and medical records belonging to a real veteran with cancer, which she used to create fraudulent documents and medical records in her name that said she had been honorably discharged and had cancer, prosecutors said when she was charged last March.

>When Cavanaugh said that she could not afford the insurance deductibles for her cancer treatment, the same veteran whose identity she had stolen and who is identified in court papers only by his initials, agreed to pay them for her - nearly $600 per month - an act that "plumbed the depths of moral depravity," prosecutors said.

>Cavanaugh said she served in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2009 until 2016, rose to the rank of corporal, and was being treated for lung cancer as a result of exposure to burn pits and from inhaling particulate matter from a bomb explosion, according to authorities.

>She accepted more than $225,000 from the Wounded Warrior Project alone to help pay for yoga classes, gym membership, groceries and physical therapy, among other things, according to prosecutors.

>She took her fraud to such extremes, authorities said, that she told people at her gym that injuries to her fingers left her unable to tie her shoes, so someone else had to get down on their knees to tie her laces whenever she wanted to work out.

This stuff used to piss me off. We live in such a clown world now, I just react with a sensible chuckle.

how do people get away with this? people in the military have very distinctive slang and way of speaking, its like a completely different language, not to mention intimate knowledge of minor stuff like base layouts, day to day activities, schedules and so on, even extremely minor stuff like what type of food you get on what days. the average person couldn't even tell you what an "unit" is. fake ex-military are EXTREMELY easy to spot. how do people get away with this? the amount of effort she must have put into creating her character and learning all this stuff must be mind boggling, like something out of a spy novel.

      >how do people get away with this? people in the military have very distinctive slang and way of speaking,
My father is a Cold War era combat veteran. He once introduced me to a guy who he later told me had been a A GWOT Army helicopter pilot, and a cop, and was doing 'security work,' and so on. The next time I mentioned the guy (months/years later) he told me that someone had basically clued him in that the guy was a stolen valor/bullshitter. Many people are trusting of others if you just act like a decent person and sell the lie with a straight face and semi-convincing manner. Don't make the lie too big, or obviously fake.

I will never understand how Americans fawn over literal government employees.

We get told that every fricking one is a hero. Common sense tells anyone that while most might be OK people, most of them are also probably shitty at doing their jobs at best, and a bunch of them are either lazy, or just collecting their check and don't give a frick.

See above. We have a population where only about 5% is either in the military or even knows someone in the military. There are a lot of people that want to feel like they are helping and being patriotic, but don't know any better and are easily taken in.

I had one guy try to convince me that he was kicked out of Marine boot camp for sleeping with his CO, who was super hot, transferred to the Army, then made a "marksman". I tried humoring him by asking which rifle he was issued, since my platoon had half a dozen DM's. He told me, and I quote "You're gonna laugh, everyone does, but they gave me an M1 Garand, because that's what I was used to shooting".

I had to hold my tongue, because this moron had gotten my friend's sister pregnant and I didn't want to deal with it later.

As far as sports go I think its competitive enough that they are legitimately good at their job. However like celebrities I don't think it qualifies them to have an opinion worth listening to on anything else.

        Several reasons;
        >has a sizable military
        >actually goes to war
        >still has societal respect for those that served which crosses into fanatical reverence in certain areas
        >despite being underwhelming for those that get turned into stumps by IEDs there ARE benefits given out
America is one of the few places that checks all of those boxes, and you also hear about stolen valor type of shit more because the 3rd trait turns simple crimes into huge moralistic uproars ripe for the media. In other nations that shit would probably just be brushed off as basic b***h fraud and not even be noticed.

Funny how it's against the law to lie about being in the military, but not about how you got into congress.

      Anonymous

It's only a lie to profit from it, the law as originally passed that made all of it illegal was deemed unconstitutional, and arguably the law is pointless because it would have already been illegal to profit from lying about being in the military as you would be charged with fraud.

Lying about pretty much anything isn't a crime, lying to obtain some monetary or other benefit (whether from the government, companies or private individuals) is by definition fraud. If you lie to an investigator or court official during an investigation that's obstruction of justice, if you lie under oath that's perjury.
