    So versions so far:
    a) Russia's own AA
    b) Ukrainian partisans with stingers
    c) some new AA missile whose transfer to Ukraine wasn't announced

    My bet's still on a.

I wouldn't be surprised if this was the case, specially after the Luhansk fireworks show, AA crews are going to be a bit tense around the Storm Shadows.

Something like that happened after the Belgorod mi24 raild, someone probably yanked AA defense command balls after that and they become more and more trigger happy, and after some firendly fire incidents the RuAF was restrited to egress and ingress ukranian airspace through some air corridors or risk getting shot down.

Of course, trying to set a system where the RuAF command reports Air Defence command their missions for the day to avoid this is pure ISIS-American tactics and not manly enough, so no one is going to do it.

I used to think the death of senior Russian leadership would have an effect on the outcome of the war, but I no longer believe that:

    1. Russians don't really have much good leadership to begin with
    2. Their problems are systemic so even a good leader will have problems implementing competent plans and fixing problems due to limits on the scope of their authority.
    3. Because the of 1 and 2, Russia can just replace dead leadership with morons off the street with minimal appreciable damage. The damage they can do is limited by the systems which prevent them from causing real damage.

At best, if enough "loyal" generals died, it could have an effect on the eventual coup/civil war that is going to take place.

      Anonymous

I know it's blindly naive, but I used to think with enough general's deaths, a coup would become inevitable as the military leaders would value their lives over facing Putin's wrath.

Pretty much confirms they were given AIM-120C or D. A and B only have 50km of range, these aircraft were taken out at least 50km from the border, suicide for any pilot.
I cant believe the MIG-29 and SU-27 can carry AGM-88's and AIM-120's at the same time now. What a world we live in.

i don't know if that would work. AIM-120s are active radar but they're meant to rely on datalink as much as possible so they don't make the plane's RWR react before it's too late. an mi-8 might not have a RWR that can detect a missile going active on them but a SU-34 definitely would

I think back to the panic around a possible war with Iran after Soleimani got capped - remember that civilian airliner that the Iranians shot down because all their AD crews were on edge? I wonder if something similar happened here, only instead of American jets being the shadows that are being jumped at, it's Storm Shadow instead.

It's especially effective from uncoordinated hordes what rely on a singular command structure with shit poor communications, so if they're told "shoot anything that looks like a threat" without any way to verify or countermand or communicate they're going to push the button.

    >The ADM-160A carries a Signature Augmentation Subsystem (SAS) which is composed of various active radar enhancers which cover a range of frequencies. The SAS can therefore simulate any aircraft, from the B-52 Stratofortress to the F-117 Nighthawk.
    >One payload option could be a thermobaric warhead, essentially turning the MALD into a cruise missile.

    Everything is MALD.
See that Su-27 headed back to its airbase? It's actually a MALD. Shoot it down.

Naw bro. It was aim-120s fired from mig-29s at max range. They probably knew the patterns of the daily glide bomb attacks and just fired and forgot.

That's why every pilot died, radar seeking not thermal.

We are seeing a Ukraine that is now confident enough in their SAMs they are willing to start using their airforce again, before if they lots CAP they were fricked but now they can defend their airspace without planes they can start risking them again.

If Ukies get their airforce in the sky again it's literally game over for Russia in its fullest sense. Ukies will retake everything and will most likely get to dictate terms.

American weapons are forbidden to be used in Russia. So it would have to be Ukrainian SAMs? But which ones would be able to reach that far?

It'll be Ukie fighters launching fox 3's, likely R-27EAs as I doubt AIM-120s are linked to their radars and pitbulling an AIM-120 at 50km isn't going to hit shit.

If that's true... jesus. It's Ukraine about to frick shit up. Backed by Patriots they will have an effective "No Fly Zone" of their own. Ukie jets can then fire their own home made weapons into Russian airspace to pick off targets. This is without F-16's.
