You gotta pay the price if you want to play the game. It makes sense for India to invest in a navy with carriers, and you have to train the crews somehow.

      Anonymous

India gains nothing from force projection since they have a massive bleeding land border with both countries that hate them and need force distribution to protect their enormous coastline, owning each carrier ties up 10-20 destroyers, submarines, and other support vessels that could be patrolling/harassing convoys/etc.
Ignoring the massive cost of carrier group upkeep, the money for the purchase would have been better served investing in domestic port improvement, land base resilience, and not pissing off the United States, one of the few countries that could casually ruin India's day because of the reasonably positive relationship with hurka durka Pakistan.

A mutually beneficial alternative would be cooperation with Taiwan to transfer and produce additional Tuo Chiang. Because this would subsidize one of China's primary enemies, it means every dollar buys twice as much naval protection for India, compared to potentially funding a Chinese ally. If India bought and armed 12 Tuo Chiangs with BrahMos (+16-35 more for the wasted money on Vikrant and efficiency from increased Tou Chiang production), China would be shitting bricks, since that translates into Taiwan doubling its purchases too. India transforms into one of the most well equipped navies overnight. In the absolute best case, Taiwan conducts tech transfer, the US allows it, and India can produce cheap Tuo Chaings for both countries, massive return on investment.

If Taiwan is too far off limits, bootlegging La Fayettes from Singapore's modernized version would be a fair alternative for similar reasons, the ships are a bit larger but the price efficiency would be much worse. As a bonus France would probably be involved since it's a downstream tech trade.
Of course, a mixed navy with submarines would be superior... coincidentally, India's total inability to get access to submarine technology from the US might have something to do with buying junk from Russia as well.

"one of the most well equipped" isn't very difficult, the US is pretty much the only competitor, but ~40 stealth corvettes with modern missiles and capability for running baby Aegis would make India vastly more capable for defensive action than every European navy barring France, and I wouldn't bet France's bluewater navy against that

          >Tuo chiangs

          You are moronic.

          >2000 ton class corvette
You are moronic, it's ~700 tons, not 2k.
Why would you need big useless hunks of metal when interdiction is the goal?
India buys outdated junk when there are modern options built specifically to blow up Chinese warships, capable of bluewater use in one of the most turbulent oceans on the planet, and to simulate a very budget version of Aegis, a capability that India's larger, more vulnerable vessels desperately need.

In 2018, despite the US’ threat of sanctions, India correctly chose Russia’s S-400 over the American Patriot Advanced Capability (PAC-3) and THAAD (Terminal High Altitude Area Defense) missiles. A predictably outrageous outburst from President Donald Trump against India’s decision followed.

An occasional controlled burn on a Russian carrier reduces the fuel load from leaking oil and improperly stored ammunition and prevents larger fires during combat. It may seem counterintuitive but fires have a healthy cleaning function in the Russian military ecosystem.

They don’t. Haven’t sent anything in aid over a decade. UK has already sent more to Ukraine than it ever did to India, or in fact all aid sent to all countries combined since WW2. Not it appears to be making any difference, since it is probably all swallowed up by corruption.

To where would India project power overseas?
Land based air and frigate navy is fine for them.

Where is any country supposed to project power? The same arguments could be make for UK and France.

India has maintained hostilities and inherited territorial conflicts with every single neighbouring country.

40% of its border is on the sea. If you blockade India by the sea its cut off from the world.

        Anonymous

Sure they need a good navy to circumvent blockades. But that is destroyers. Carriers are just mobile airfields and they don't need it for Pakistan or whatever. I guess they could park one off the coast of Taiwan when relations with China deteriorate.

Why bother with carriers when you could get an X amount of destroyers for the same money.

They're crappy but cheap. The cheapness of Russian equipment is what draws a lot of poor third world countries towards it. However it comes with the drawback of sucking in quality.

Britain sells it's older carriers if it's forced to redirect cashflow between maintenance to new surface combatants.

For example the Ocean was sold to Brazil, had some work to it (updating/removing systems) and is now their new flagship - replacing their old flagship which was a used French carrier.

I believe the Chakri Nubet (for all intents and purposes the govt's private yacht) was also an ex Spanish ship.

Any country that wants to operate a carrier and has the facilities to develop/maintain them can usually build them from scratch.

Russia and India are edge cases as they have allusions of grandeur but are basically shitholes.

It's more economical for western-allied countries to build LPD/LHD's and use F-35's or helicopters. A an aircraft carrier is a massive undertaking only viable for first rate powers.
