anyone who knows anything can see it would be a problem lol. tank barrels aren't designed for the shell counts of artillery. anyone who works for the government should know enough to get suspicious when people start measuring their success by throughput. Russians were gloating of the artillery overmatch and how many thousands more shells they were flinging at Ukraine not realizing that artillery barrels wear out and the Russian MIC was kind of fricked even before the war. So they've burned a lot of their ammunition and equipment advantage dumping rounds into dirt and kindergartens, in addition to spending 10 months funneling men into urban combat in small cities.

By the end of this war Russia will have lost its entire Soviet legacy military. All of the equipment will either be lost or so heavily damaged/used as to be useless and they have neither enough money nor enough productive capacity to replace what has been lost. The stocks they are burning through now were built up over 60 years and are running low in two years of a war with an even poorer and shittier version of their own country. Meanwhile NATO is increasing production of everything and rearming back to cold war levels, but with weapons that might as well be magic compared to Russhit while having sent all remaining cold war stocks to Ukraine.

TLDR: Russia has ran out of the entrenching shovels

        Not reading broken translation.
        Rundown pls

          Anonymous

          Summary, not a direct translation:

Wagner gets extra ammo because they can leave if they don't get it but, by giving Wagner extra ammo, it means taking away from regular forces who, if they threatened to leave like Wagner, would be punished. Which is bullshit. Both are dying for the same war, but being treated differently.

Shell issues have been ongoing for months but were hushed up. Why are waiting on the people who ignored the problem to fix it? Why are we repeating the same mistakes and expecting a different result.

I found out that we somehow we ran out of entrenching tools. We're desperate for them and we've been reduced to shortening regular size shovels to make them. It is ridiculous.

Leaving problems to fester is a bad idea. Because of the Ammo shortages were not fixed, we made do with ATGMs and tank barrels, but now we're out of those as well.

TL;DR: Stuff is broken, fix it.

Rationing of shells started 8 months ago. Prigozhin was essentially able to blackmail the Russian government into sending more shells to Wagner by threatening to pull out, which he can do as a private contractor. Not without loss, but it's all just money according to law. So even though he has been seen publicly complaining about not getting enough shells, it's not just Wagner who are being shorted, it's everyone. The army is down to using ATGMs and tanks instead of artillery because they simply don't have enough shells.

I'm reading a bit between the lines but that's essentially what he's saying.

Finally for frick sake. I had been saying for months that Russia (and Ukraine come to that) had been using tanks as make-shift artillery. They would go onto a hill, aim at a town and fire a few HE shells and move. Because they didn't have the artillery (shells or other wise) to do it. Now they've done that so much that their tanks are now busted in the barrels from shooting so much (as if they were artillery) and can't be repaired quickly or easily. So now they're resorting to ATGM as artillery.

I fricking said this months ago and people went
        >hur dur no they're not
And when I said 'This is why they're dragging T-54/55's out of storage - because they can be used as make-shift artillery' I got
        >hur dur lol you're defending 40's tanks ecks dee hehe tank is a tank amirite hehe xDDDDD
Well there you go, straight from the doomer himself (because you fricks never read the dozens of sources from both sides which stated they used tanks as make-shift artillery) they used tanks so much in this role they can no longer perform their actual job and are resorting to ATGM for that.

I think they will have successes but I don't see them being able to fight through mile after mile of entrenched defenders while still at a significant artillery and air power disadvantage.

The most worrying things about the leaks is the loss of air defenses. That Ukraine has managed to sideline the Russian air force has been a key component of their successes. It's a reason why the F-16 should be given to them ASAP.

The Kharkiv counteroffensive was a great success, but it could have been even more successful. Ukraine was able to generate a rout and then caused the reinforcements to rout. Russia has very high aircraft losses trying to stop the bleeding, but by all accounts their willingness to lose aircraft paid off because, operating in an area where UAF air defenses didn't have the same sort of coverage, they were able to inflict losses on the spearheads and bog them down.

The best outcome I see as somewhat likely is them getting a similar breakthrough to Kharkiv, but actually closing the encirclement in time to force a large number of Russians to surrender. This is the one justification for keeping Bakhmut that makes sense. If you can surround a large, low morale, exhausted and undersupplied group, you can get a lot of prisoners.

10-20,000 prisoners gives Ukraine much more leverage the next time Russia considers going "hurr, we will genocide you," and attacking civilian infrastructure. Also, when families learn their son is dead, that's it. They might be angry, but nothing can be done. When they know they are captured and the POWs are allowed to send letters and videos home, they will be highly motivated to try to end the war. 20,000 families produces easily a quarter million friends and families who are now willing to act more drastically in protesting for the end of the conflict. It also is a massive blow to Russian propaganda efforts as you can cover up and deny deaths for a while, but you cannot cover up videos coming back via the internet.

The majority of trenches behind the front are created with machines. Not with shovels. Shovels are for the guys who enter an area that was previous held by the opposition and you need to dig your own trenches so they're facing the way the enemy has gone - instead of using the trenches the enemy was using against you.

If you don't have shovels for that, you can't do it quickly and effectively and that is an issue.

MTL in the current year doesn't cope well with euphemisms and metaphors. Russian has a lot of euphemisms and metaphors.

It'll get better though, just needs more data.

        Anonymous

There's also the way Russian sentence structure is pretty substantially different than that of English, some constructs being absent entirely, while casings can be brought into English participles in different ways.

The result being that MTL has to decide what participles to use and how to structure sentences (in the possiblity of multiple ways to do so). Typically, it'll try to do something resembling the original text, which ends up quite heavy in the English translation.

      Combination of:
      >desire to emulate Imperial Russian literature which was very verbose and flowery
      >difficulty translating from Russian to English which can render many figures of speech somewhat silly
      >habit from centuries of totalitarian rule of various flavours to speak in allegory and indirection in order to communicate forbidden ideas or facts without doing so openly and winding up in prison

      Anonymous

The great works of classical russian literature make heavy use of metaphors. Employing such metaphors has long been considered an astute use of the russian language by russian intellectual circuits, ergo the russian education system judiciously enforces the aforementioned style of writing. Thus even less astute students with a poor grasp of the russian language frequently endeavor to employ metaphors, although the given employment of such metaphors are often incongruous and extraneous.

Donbabweans always draw the short end of the stick now. Puccia is robbing Peter to pay Paul again, so if the donbabweans are running near zero on arty and ATGMs, never mind the shovels, it probably won't be long before the rest of the Puccian military follow suit.

What got me laughing the hardest about this one is that if you look up those tires, the sales brochure notes they're for light freight haulers and utility vehicles and explicitly states they're unsuitable for heavy freight trucks. Like, this wasn't even a case of chinesium or someone getting scammed. The Russians got literally what they paid for, and there's nobody to blame but their own corrupt procurement people.

Does russian ammo stockpile only exist on paper while in reality it has been transmutated into dachas, or is it being hoarded by the nascent warlord formations in anticipation for the warring states period?

There is ammo and they are firing a lot. But they are hard pressed, as are the ukranians.

They have enough ammo for individual engagements. What they don't have is the quantity neccesary for the continuous, indiscriminate bombardments they were doing in May/June last year, which is coincidentally when the Russians were making steady advances. Their offensive capacity has basically slowly degraded to the point where they've nearly ground to a halt over one medium-sized town. Remember; the Russians took Lysychansk and Sverodonetsk exactly the same way they're taking Bakhmut, the difference now is that they don't have the firepower to properly suppress the Ukrainians.

      Anonymous

All of the above. Shitty old soviet stocks that are unusable, stocks of working ammo that got transmuted into yachts, ammo that only ever existed on paper, a piss-poor logistics system and the Russians resorting to mas bombardment.

Not all of them. Strelkov has stated for more than a year now that Russia should have begun the process of mobilization at the start of week 3 when it became clear that the Ukrainians weren't going to roll over. He was right.

          Anonymous

yeah his basic solution to everything is to just double down and really commit to winning. He is delusional in the belief that they could have won, but it's not like it's the wrong thing to do if you've decided politically that you have to win the war which the Russian government seems to have done. They constantly painted themselves into a corner by trying to half-ass everything but still win, so most of Strelkov's suggestions to just go balls to the walls early on would have been a much better strategy.

Not all of them. Strelkov has stated for more than a year now that Russia should have begun the process of mobilization at the start of week 3 when it became clear that the Ukrainians weren't going to roll over. He was right.

Girkin is a critic with a superficial level understanding of the problems he complains about. He is not "wrong" but he never presents anything but unworkable "solutions to the problems of the Russian army. He doesn't understand cause and effect and lacks the intelligence to predict outcomes and resolve problems inerrant to the solutions he presents.

When Girkin states the obvious like "we need mobilization", he doesn't go into the various political, social, production, logistical, training, and other impediments and how to resolve them. When he says "we need more shells", he doesn't understand that qualified people (or at least the most qualified people Russia can find) are already working nonstop on the issue. When he says "we need more trained artillery observers", he doesn't take the next step and rationalize the immediate battlefield effects of having to remove the trainers from the battlefield to create more. He knows nothing about public support/sentiment, non-military production, limitations in the Russian economy, technology gaps, foreign exchange reserves, and so forth. He cannot comprehend that going into a "wartime economy" would be deeply unpopular, not necessarily increase production substantially, would be countered by the west, etc..

The whole thing reminds me of the fable of "Belling the cat". I won't bore you with the whole story but basically: A bunch of mice get together to come up with a way to stop being eaten by a cat. One mouse (Girkin), suggests putting a bell on the cat's collar so they can hear it coming. As if that has never been thought of before. A much wiser mouse then asks for a volunteer to put the bell on the cat's collar, thereby pointing out the unworkability of the solution and the ultimate stupidity of it.

As much as they can be, yes.

          >but he never presents anything but unworkable "solutions to the problems of the Russian army.
He cried for mobilization until it happened and then declared that it was too little too late.

He cried for mobilization and ignored WHY they weren't doing it. Then it became untenable when 1.3M Russians fled after the announcement. A huge chunk of their skilled workforce, their tax base, and now they have workforce shortages in some key defense industries and can't fend off cyber attacks. It also didn't fix the military situation. Now he's calling for MORE mobilization. It won't solve their problems. Every soldier you create is a dude who isn't paying taxes, or making shells.

you're wrong, he's well aware of all these problems, it's not like they're secret
the subtext for all of his calls and what he spelled out several times was that any disagreements inside the country about the policies he proposes should be met with bullet to the head, because "it's war time", "the existence of russia is at stake", etc.
as a westerner you're just failing to comprehend that all the problems can be solved by terror and s.runov is well aware of that and expects that to be the modus operandi "should he take power"

The people he needs to convince to give him power will see his shallow understanding of the situation and dismiss his rantings for the stupidity they are. Plenty of propagandists have been pushing for bullets for "traitors". No one is going to give Girkin any authority when his solution for everything is "give me, the idiot, unlimited power to implement my plan and the ability to shoot anyone who disagrees"

he doesn't need to convince anyone of anything, he just wants russia to take one last remaining step and declare war and close the borders, everything just glides to labor camps for enemies of the people and nationalization from there
you're trying to make out like he's trying to get catapulted to upper echelons of power and everyone but you knows that it's impossible. All he's vying for is for russia to stop pretending that it's not at war

Mobilizing earlier in the war could have tipped the balance, especially given how tenuous it was for Ukraine at certain points. He understood full well why they weren’t. He just thought, correctly, that if they wanted to win they’d have to eat the pain of that decision.

You are assuming that russian leadership isn’t a bunch of corrupt gangsters. There is zero excuses of why the russian MoD haven’t started to import large amounts of chinese machine tools to escalate ammo production, or why there are no attempts to secure a steady influx of recruits to the army, or even why Putin still keeps the nonsensical fiction of a “special military operation” instead of formally declaring war.

          Anonymous

The corrupt gangster excuse is another facet that Girkin is ignoring. For a true believer (and war criminal) like Girkin, the winning the war is a necessity. For the people making decisions, other outcomes are possible, so they get to weigh the cost/benefits of things like mobilization, imports, production, etc...

You're viewing the problems of the Russian army as problems to be fixed. When you're a corrupt autocrat, those problems are often opportunities. Why "fix" shell production? That means less chance to steal. Why "fix" shovels? We can import from China for 1/2 the price as a dual use item, charge the government full price and pocket the difference. Replace Soigu with someone competent? And risk someone not loyal? Perish the thought.

What's the difference between an entrenching tool and a regular old civilian shovel? Just a shorter handle and collapsible?

Surely they can substitute normal shovels without too much trouble, just start a shovel drive and ask civilians to drop their spare tools off at recruitment offices.

Yeah, basically it's just sized to be portable in a backpack or hung from your waistbelt.

Entrenching tools are just shorter and smaller in general, they also have facilities to attach to webgear/harnesses/belts/Y-straps and such.
The Soviets/russians also have/had a standard pattern of full size spades (issues in much smaller numbers), and there are rumors that they've started sawing these things off and issuing them as ersatz entrenching tools.

It's almost certainly because a) Putin & co. were mostly reliant on the old Soviet stockpiles to equip the RuaF in a time of war, but b) in the interim the stockpiles were stolen/sold off by employees who hadn't been paid and c) they never expected a full blown war and thought the SMO was Operation Danube + Desert Storm at worst.
