Squeeking Stairs (1930's build)

I bought a house built in the 1930s in Canada, and I'm using this video as a reference to fix the stairs from squeaking.

As seen in the pictures I'll attach, there's a third piece of wood that seems to join the X Y wood planes. I'm wondering how I should go about drilling the screw in, given this extra piece of wood?

I appreciate your help. Its a miracle I could afford any house, so I'm trying to make this place as livable as possible. Cheers m8s

close up of that "third" piece of wood that isn't in the YT vid linked in the OP.

I'm thinking about just doing a full send through the top, past the piece of wood, and into the "bottom" where you step with a 3 inch screw.

Try replacing the nails with screws. Nails slip over time, especially something that gets a lot of traffic and flexes. I had some floor squeaking in a house we used to have and I did that for anything that didn't look original flush, took care of it.

Sending a long piece of metal through old wood will probably crack it.

An old cheap house like that in the climate you're in will be expanding and contracting a lot. Likely little to no insulation and no air sealing right?

If you start trying to tighten everything up like that and it doesn't have the same room to expand and contract you could make bigger problems.

Use as few fasteners as possible from the bottom up. Make sure to drill pilot holes for once in your life.

I'd stay away from fricking around with it if you can't afford to replace the steps if wood starts splitting
If anything add more wood to make it stronger

Squeaking stairs are a free intruder detection system. Why would you ruin that?

I'm torn between wanting absolute silence in my house, and the risk that absolute silence may bring.

      >well sound-proofed house
      >can't hear a murder walking around
      or
      >getting murdered
      >no one can hear you yelling for help

But I would really like to just take dumps without loud farts echoing throughout the house.

just leave it be, who the frick cares if the stairs squeak? it's an old house made of real wood not kleenex, plastic, and particle board, the creaking is part of the charm.

Replace the nails with screws and then put some Stairtek laminate over those filthy old ones you savage.
