Space Weapons

So what will we be killing people with in space, once that starts being a thing? I had heard that conventional firearms won't work due to a lack of oxygen to combust with, so what will take their place?

I figured some kind of souped-up air rifles would work best, since you could just have a hopper full of ~9mm metal balls and a separate airtank to propel them with.

Does /k/ think melee weapons will become more prominent in space warfare?

Tiny needles launched via EM railguns, you dont need to kill someone just need to shred their suit

Like says, yea there will probably be spears and knives at first. Shit that can quickly puncture suits and flesh or shatter the visors

    Normal weaponry could work :
All the componments in the cartridge itself delivers oxygen for the combustion.

What could not work is the standard mecanism, with the low temperature and lack of atmospheric pressure which will frick up any lubrification.

So what's the solution, do you think? New research in lubricant tech?

There's no need. Dry lube like graphite works fine.

Black person how much oxygen do you think is inside the chamber when the round goes off? The gunpowder inside has an oxidizer, it doesn't need an atmosphere. Look up people shooting underwater if you don't believe me

This thread comes up regularly, lurk moar

    >guns don't need air
    >main issue will be heat dissipation since no atmosphere
    >you just need to poke a big enough hole in the other guy's suit
Those are the main points brought up each time

That fancy new plastic cased ammo would be good for heat dissipation in space guns in the void.

What. Brass or steel is much better at removing heat. Plastic is a pretty shitty thermal conductor

exactly, that's why polymer cased ammo is better at keeping guns cool since it needs less gunpowder to get the same velocities.
It's perfect for space: weights less and heats guns less.

Regular ammunition has to be brought from earth and is heavy
Air guns use air, which is in limited supply
Electricity is free with solar panels

Therefore, railguns using simple balls or needles either brought from earth or manufactured from scrap or space ore.

A normal rifle with a decently high-velocity round can, in principle, land indirect fire on any part of the Moon from any other given location on the surface. In lunar warfare, you could theoretically enforce surface-access denial in an area from the opposite side of the Moon, if you had enough ammunition and sufficient hardware/software to fire the weapon accurately.

You are an idiot. We had this thread a million times. If you really wanted to know you could have googled it in a second...but no, you needed to shit up/k/... what you wanna know next? If mech's would work? Maybe you wanna know why we dont have submarine carriers? Pathetic....

I wish we could have submarine carriers. The Japs had it right but we had to stop them from having an absolutely sexy fleet

People of the future will be inherently more civilized and an honorable culture of duels with 3d printed carbon nanofiber caveman clubs will develop to take advantage of the acrobatics possible in a low-G environments.

Railguns, ETC or Light Gas Guns.
    >M4's on Mar-
Go arm a frontline military unit with Mosin Nagant's and watch how fast they get shredded by a force 1/30th their size. All a M4 would be useful for is killing unarmed civilians, and maybe not even that if transhumanisn has gone sufficiently along.
