Technology just naturally trends towards standardization/homogenization in a self-reinforcing way (that is, the more people adopt a standard, the more everybody else will adopt it). Look at old computers, for instance: there used to be dozens of different operating systems, CPU architectures, peripheral and interface standards, and so on. Then, partly out of merit, partly out of convenience, and partly out of circumstance, a set of standards rose above the others and it's what everybody uses now. It's no different with military equipment. It's boring, sure, but it's just the way things are.
