Sound Proofing Walls

Bought some moving blankets to pin on a wall in a rental. There is a unit next to me.

Does it have to be floor to ceiling?
I have two blankets so am starting small.
Going to use push pins to put them into the wall.

Certified Moving Blanket, 72-in x 80-in
Any tips, tricks, thoughts?

You need mass (and a lot of it) to make a difference here.

A bunch of blankets is mass.
While not being a huge mass.
But definitely something that will deaden noises/sounds.

If they were mass loaded vinyl blankets mounted offset from the wall then yeah a little bit. To achieve any kind of actual noise reduction from a wall you'll need to absorb it. There are products made specifically for this.

              >Ideal for clear voices and TV (Not suitable for impact noise, bass sounds from music, deep voices or snoring)
So they’re useless. I can’t imagine how much these things cost.

Just using moving blankets sounds better.

If only the blankets were dense like you, them they'd work

Push pins will not hold moving blankets.
Yes, they have to cover the whole wall.
Your neighbors will be able to hear you jerking off to child porn, regardless.

      Go to 4:50
      Push pins holding them up.
What would you use to hold them?
If they are 6 lbs multiple pins should hold.

I don't know but I've considered putting the automotive sound deadening materials over windows or other lowly-insulated areas to see how it would perform for soundproofing: https://autocative.com/best-automotive-sound-deadening-material/

Another option is this material called 'green glue' or something like that. It looks like it takes some work to install though, for example you have to secure it between two pieces of plywood for it to work, so just installing it basically involves creating a large wooden panel. Also there is no way to just put this up over existing walls in a way that looks reasonable, you would have to do this inside the actual wall. That's unless you are okay with having a giant panel of plywood over your interior wall.

Ill have to check this out thanks for the info.
Right now I am just going to attempt blankets as a cheap solution.

Adding blankets in direct contact with the wall won't do much, hanging them 6" or so off the wall will create a dead air space that will help lessen the amplitude of sound waves trying to pass through it, which = lower volume.
Anyone who says density is the key to reducing sound transmission is talking out their ass, dense materials transfer sound just fine, often better than nearly anything as is the case with water, where even the tiniest sound inside a submarine can be picked up via its vibrations traveling through a very dense material.

If there's more *mass* then less sound gets through. Higher wall material density = more mass per square metre of wall = thinner wall.
Yes you can play around with air gaps but you quickly lose room space for small gains.

Wrong, and totally ignores resonance and sympathetic vibration.
Real walls designed for minimal sound transfer decouple wall surfaces to prevent transfer through dense materials like studs.
For windows they use air gaps between multiple panes, usually three panes. If you were to use one sheet of glass with the same *mass* as the three panes in a triple glazed window the performance would be far inferior, even if you accounted for and added the *mass* of the air in the triple glazed unit.

So putting the moving blankets on the walls is an alright cheap solution? Lol

Already said that putting them directly on the walls is inferor to using them to create a dead air space.
But applying something to the wall that has the same *mass* as the blankets packed more densely will perform even more poorly. Sorry.

Build a wall using 2 isolated blankets and see how you go.

Might be tough in a rental.

Kek triple glass windows are not for sound deadening.

LMAO, another ignorant clown who thinks nobody else can read-

"1/8” glass with a 1/4” airspace and another 1/8” sheet of glass has an STC of 28, and normal voice levels can still be heard and distinguished. ...Using two thicker 1/4″ plates and the 1/2″ airspace between increases the value to 35, and prevents loud talking from being understood. If the same 1/4″ plate is used with a 1″ airspace the STC to climbs to 37."

"Depending on the thickness of the glazing and the air gap between panes, the STC values can range from 26 to 41.

...Insulated triple pane windows frequently have an STC rate of 39."

Just have a sensor attached to a speaker that plays the music inverse by wave. The waves will cancel out created no noise.

    Anything will work/do some improvement.

Sound from material might be the worst, where slams/bangs on connected material moves to you. Material sounds move faster than regular sound.

Solution is to diffuse it through different material and dead space. The more the waves are diffused the more they disappear.

So I should try these two moving blankets then.

That's going to look so ghetto trashy. Might as well put aluminum foil in the windows as well to round out the look.

I sound-proofed my bedroom. Greatest decision of my life.

Proper way to do it is remove old drywall and install clips to hold new drywall. See pic. Investigate that method, it's the best.
