Soledar situation explains exactly why they need F-16s

>Russian assault first with armor and troops up the main roads, first signs of combined arms
>see how far they get, then proceed to drop mortars on the resisting defenders.
>a lighter force of specialized infantry then creep up and CQB into the defenders from surrounding buildings

Ukranian artillery is tied up trying to fend off the company sized infantry groups but each shell even if useful only gets a few of the onrushing russians at a time, as the directions of assault are all built up and urban.

4 thousand pounders from each F-16 on call however will pretty much kill an entire company or stop it cold

Ukraine does not have enough heavy weapons - 155mm and ATGMs wont stop a combined arms assault that easily

Which explains why abandoning Soledar perhaps 3 or 4 days ago should have been the move. They had done well with attrition and had made Russia pay dearly. Looks like they got greedy for Orc blood and it will cost them.

Cheer up. The Ukrainians will study this battle, and adjust accordingly.

The Russians are STILL dependent on absurd amount of ammo to get anywhere, which means they still need working logistics to advance.

Sounds like a competent strategy, shame if the CO gets himarsed

If it's competent, there is a high chance it was devised by the NCOs after they got told to "assault those coordinates" yet again.
Of course, and that's bad news for Ukraine, maybe Russians really lucked into a competent CO after all the previous ones were killed. At least a few high-ranking officers died during the fabulous New Years' celebration.

Cluster munitions would help. Will donbass ever be useful or even habitable afterwards, though? They have done a good job of keeping the fighting away from most of Ukraine but donbass seems permanently fricked with the chemical residue from explosives and UXOs.

They were running a surprising number of air strikes in Kherson. They just got a bunch of JDAMs so obviously the Pentagon thinks they can still use what they have, I think they just have to use it very situationally, only after degrading AA with rocket strikes and an interdiction campaign.

This is why they need the F-35, not the F-16, even if only a few.
      >Hard to detect and lock
      >Much better chance to avoid anything coming for it
      >Incredibly long sensory range and stand off weapons, can ID AA and blast it from far off, then when that is done start providing CAS.

Nothing too exotic then, Russia is still using huge amounts of infantry to blunt force their way in these assaults, I would love to know their true casualty rates.
Like the Donbass in the early summer, they are pouring everything into these assaults on one point to try and break though. Remains to be seen if it exhausts them and they pay the price in the long run. The whole campaign has run on short term planning and goals for them.
Even if Zelensky leaves and a Pro Russian government takes over, the entire population will keep resisting now, what even is the long term win condition now.

          >infantry squad advanced to known/suspected enemy position and does recon by fire
          >once enemy reveals itself spot him and relay info to fire support
          >suppress enemy trench with mortars
          >get close
          >first squad breaks in and gets a foothold
          >clear trench with small arms and frags, Mark already cleared positions for next squads who’ll be coming
          >once one squad is wiped out send another in to keep clearing

          That’s my understanding of it

            Anonymous

And as for the Ukrainian response stated there
            >keep light armor (ifv, apc, armored car) in reserve in defilade close behind the trench
            >when the infantry attack begins pop out and start blasting them with autocannon/hmgs
            >start indirect fires on them to kill them/suppress them for the afv/create a wall

The guy then criticizes their use of indirect fire saying it should be used for counter battery instead of on the attackers inf so that they would stop suppressing the trench and then the defenders in the trench would kill the attackers

            Anonymous

They seem to be using upto 3 waves of men on a single position is my point, the first and second waves seem expected to die. They might make progress, but the casualties are unsustainable.

              Ted talk

The post said it was 8 man waves so basically a squad, hence 3 squads are platoon per position, but how big a position are we talking?

Anyway yes that’s pure attrition warfare, at least it’s not the meme front charge but it uses suppression (assuming the meme ever happened irl idk maybe it did in ww1)

Well if you have men and materiel to spare maybe you can do it if there’s no better options, or if you have numerical advantage such that even with an unfavorable wasteful casualty ratio you can win without losing any significant % of your forces since the enemy is much smaller (not this case even tho the Russian have way more manpower), plus they’re the attackers so they’re already at a disadvantage

The force multipliers are various and some are dependent on others, such as good equipment, good training, good ncos that make the squads and fireteams behave, good officers to apply force effectively and efficiently, technology for an infinite amount of reasons, ill name few: intel, pgm, comms, fire control systems on armor, atgms, air superiority, AA, basically the effectiveness of everything is augmented if it has “better tech”, by that I don’t mean electronics just that the guys designing and producing it have figured out a way to make that thing do whatever that it does better

Then there’s attrition factors that are basically size, how much of x item you have (tanks, ifvs, arty etc), how many men factories etc

Then soft factors like political popularity of the war effort among the population, morale, the choice of goon go to war being non moronic in the first place etc

Now look at cost per flight hour and cost per shell fired and ask yourself if your reasoning is sound.
Bonus points for including training times of artillerymen vs pilots and the support staff needed to keep the respective system in the fight.

Will Ukraine learn to use F-16 in time? Not even Canada has got this yet (gonna in 2026), wouldn't it be better to give them more soviet aircraft (and give the newer aircraft to the countries that give them the soviet aircraft.

...but I wonder how much of a difference there is between what they are using now and F-16, if some pilots can start training on simulators while the west debate over whether to give them F-16 or nt.

  22. 1 year ago
    Anonymous

If a Ukrainian forward observer can call in artillery fire or for whatever reason can not call in accurate artillery fire what would adding F-16's to the mix accomplish ?
If you were a Ukrainian FO tasked with supporting a defensive position such as a trench line around this town why is artillery not the tool of choice ?
I understand if you do not have artillery available it would be great to have CAS but it seems like arty is the better weapon in this fight.

Why not just landmines as a stop-gap? Halt the Russian advance with some wholesome explosions.
