I can easily see them switching rapidly to a 5.56 NATO standard platform eventually, after the war 'ends' or whatever. But really not a priority right now.

Look up the IPI Malyuk or Vulcan/Vulcan-M.
Ukrainian home grown bulpup AK. They look pretty decent and their SF dudes use them so they might actually be good.

Pretty sure that's not a Malyuk but one of those Blackstorm conversion kit. Ukrainians really love their bullpups.

          >Ukrainians really love their bullpups
they ride around in BMPs and other troop carriers a lot, where size is at a premium. they also have a lot of old-stock AK74's without the folding trunnion. bullpup is the solution for them.

i just dont like it bros. but i can see why they use it.

Ukraine is and will be an Africa tier nation

After 100,000 or 200,000 more of them die within the next year or two, Russia will be exhausted and NATO will forget about Ukraine as Ukraine will serve no more purpose

The Women will all be sucking wiener in Europe and whatever Men are left in Ukraine will be in various militias riding around in technicals and whatever APCs/Tanks are still able to run. The Ukrainian army will be like your typical shitty third world army where everyone has mismatched uniforms, guns, etc

The US and its partners should learn the failed lessons of the 1990s and not waste resources trying to transform Russian society, economy, or government into a Western-style democracy. Attempts failed in the 1990s and would likely fail again. Policymakers should instead humbly acknowledge the limits of Western influence to create a democratized Russia
      >Contain any spillover from internal Russian fighting. Revolution, insurgency, and civil war—at both a national and regional level—could occur after the dissolution of the Russian Federation. Containing any internal fighting inside Russia’s current internationally recognized borders should be a top priority for the US and its partners
      >Spread stability on Europe’s periphery by expanding Euro-Atlantic integration and deepening bilateral relationships. Euro-Atlantic integration has been one of the greatest drivers of stability in Europe since 1949. When the Russian Federation dissolves, NATO and the European Union should take advantage of Moscow’s weakness and push for a “big bang” enlargement for remaining candidate and aspirant countries
      >When possible, hold those in Russia accountable for atrocities committed in Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made an interesting proposal,2 supported by various Western parliamentary bodies,3 to create a Special Tribunal for the Punishment of the crime of Aggression against Ukraine.

The fate of the post-USSR doesn't follow any particular logic.

East Germany and Poland and the Baltics recovered fairly well
Places like Albania and Bulgaria and Romania are shitty but still saw genuine, marked improvement
It's basically like Russia, maybe Moldova and Belarus just willfully chose to fricking rot forever when it was their big opportunity

To put it simply, not a particularly high bar, if Russia were as developed as Poland it'd be breathing down Japan's neck to be the 3rd largest economy on earth, a genuine superpower, not wrestling with Brazil to be the 12th. Surely they must have some dim awareness of this crippling of themselves, ESPECIALLY given how obsessed they are with "power and influence"?

          It does.
Eastern European countries, despite being occupied by kremlin, were nation states and had independence in the inter-war era.
With exception of Baltic states, that's not true for ex-soviet countries.

Romania and Bulgaria were massively held back by vatnik remnants and still managed to take off the moment the Soviets stopped sucking them dry. Now imagine how much better they could have done if every single communist had been dealth with in the early 90s instead of allowing them to control up to 50% of the GDP in both countries even to this day.

        >As of 2013 Russian citizens over 18 years of age can obtain a firearms license after attending gun-safety classes and passing a federal test and background check. Firearms may be acquired for self-defense, hunting, or sports activities, as well as for collection purposes. Carrying permits may be issued for hunting firearms licensed for hunting purposes. Initially, purchases are limited to long smooth-bore firearms and pneumatic weapons with a muzzle energy of up to 25 joules (18 ft⋅lbf). After five years of shotgun ownership, rifles may be purchased. Handguns are generally not allowed, but with the growing popularity of practical shooting events and competitions in Russia in recent years (e.g., IPSC), handgun ownership has now been allowed and the handguns have to be stored at a shooting club. Rifles and shotguns with barrels less than 500 mm (20 in) long are prohibited, as are firearms which shoot in bursts or have more than a 10-cartridge capacity. Suppressors are prohibited. An individual cannot possess more than ten guns (up to five shotguns and up to five rifles) unless they are part of a registered gun collection.[2]

go frick yourself with your moronic russian gun control as well.

let's be real, the worst case outcome for Ukraine now is an armistice. Westerners would continue to invest in ukraine as a bulwark against russian aggression and in another 10-20 years it'll turn into another south korea. Meanwhile the occupied territories will be depopulated and abandoned because even if russia could afford to invest in the region they won't because they wouldn't be able to turn a profit exploiting the area's resources.

My best guess is the Malyuk or Tavor because both are made in the country.
However, like you said the massive amount of foreign rifles currently in the country could easily change that and I can’t say with certainty what will happen

      >because both are made in the country.
Ukraine makes a shitton of designs locally, even if most of them are just localized copies. They generally don't have a problem manufacturing anything, unless it requires big investments, because first – no one was ever willing to give them investments, and second – anything involving large sums of money will quickly attract post-soviet bureaucrats that will quickly drain anything dry with bribery through mindshattering brainfrickery bureaucratic bullshit.

Why would they make any move to establish their own standard rifle in the middle of a war? For the timebeing they have easy access from their allies to both the AK and AR platforms and to near endless supplies of 5.56 and 5.45, both the most widely produced and available small arms and ammo in the 21st century.

Given the nature of the war and how heavily centred it currently is around artillery I'd imagine the bigger concern is gradually winding down reliance on legacy 152mm-based Soviet artillery and getting the UAF switched over to 155mm NATO compatible systems.

even back in the unconventional insurgent wars of iraq/afghanistan on platoon-squad levels small arms like pistols and automatic rifles were effectively self defense auxiliraries. Offensive heavy hitters were squad machine guns and grenade launchers with the occasional sharpshooter if the organization and equipment allowed it.

Point is there is not really that much of a difference what you use in that role. It can be a old AK and it can be a newer pimped out AR. Its the big guns that will do most of the killing anyway. More so in conventional war as artillery and mortar strikes are the big guns now when the air space is contested

There have been tens of thousands or more donated, former warsaw pact emptying their armories of AKs, AUGs, G3s and FALs, C7s, F2000s.
The Americans haven't donated many, but everyone else has been.

AK-74's are fine rifles for their role. The big question long term is 5.45 ammunition availability. Ukraine has some limited capacity to produce, and most countries that used to make it haven't in at least a decade. Azerbaijan might make some soon though but it won't be enough. Ukraine is going to inevitably switch over full to 5.56 if this war keeps up but that's not a big deal, the bigger deal is where all the 5.56 small arms will come from. Now if we hadn't left 200k+ M16's and M4's in Afghanistan and Iraq, that'd be a non-issue... flip side of that though is the US has a massive cottage industry for the AR platform, Ukraine has multiple factories/companies making/assembling AR's, there are like a dozen Euro piston AR based rifles, etc... it's just a matter of money and politics.

I'll say that most soldiers are likely not going through high enough round counts for the shorter life and more armorer heavy side of the AR family of rifles to matter and even if they do, complete replacement of a rifle is more likely than armorer level bullshit. If I were a Ukie soldier though with an old M16 or M4, I'd definitely keep spare small parts on me if I could though.

They'll likely switch over to a NATO platform since they're gunning for NATO membership anyway. AKs will definitely stay in reserve though, this war shows having a large stockpile of things that go bang is never a bad idea.
From what I've heard the CZ BREN-2 has been exceedingly popular amongst those who get to use it, I wouldn't be surprised if that's one of the contenders for a post-war service rifle.
