They lost momentum. Which is why its so moronic to focus all of your troops into one small area. You can make gains, but only for a moment until you lose momentum. Doubling down like this is only good in a short run, but it can bite you back in the long run

Having momentum is important when it comes to an offensive. The fact that they stalled in that specific town means they lost momentum and have limited offensive capabilities. A good offensive would have a town captured along with having momentum after the capitulation of it. Just so you know, soledar is not a big town.

Or maybe they can reinforce their gains. Them stalling means they overextert themselves and can't go any further than that. You can have momentum while having a secured rear guard.

This was what I was thinking too, just kind of looking at it, would it not be easier to "keep russia in" soledar, than to keep them out after a point? If they try to breakout, they only have so many avenues to do it from Soledar, and a rapid reaction force can intercept any breakout attempt toward the west pretty fast. They boke the siege, captured the town, now are just besieged in a spot that isn't gaining them much.

Especially since Wagner's leader has personally made Soledar a HUGE deal to his ambitions. Potentially losing it all would really put a dent in his star. He'll defend it fiercely.

The easiest way to solve the Russian problem is to kill every single on of them. Thankfully they seem to agree with this

Which should be ruthlessly taken advantage.

THREATEN Soledar. Force the Vatniks to defend it. Blast their supplies and troop concentrations in and around the city, and make their position untenable real fast.

Not to mention the Russians made such a fricking DEAL out of getting Soledar, it's politically untenable to not leave a substantial force there to try to hold it.

Ukrainians will exploit this by forcing the Russians to defend whatever they've seized.

            https://i.imgur.com/4gO8L1t.jpg

beyond "taking soledar" there wasn't a plan beyond that probably. Chances are the Wagner guys saw a chance to push, over commited to that part of the line, made some gains at high cost, all to run into a second line of defenses farther west into the city. Where do they even go from Soledar? South on the Road to Krasna Hora and then Bakhmut , exposing themselves to counter attack to the west and north? Ignore Bakhmut and fight north to Siversk? Do they just strike out west into the fields and range roads and continue that way? Soledar is a take and hold objective to inhibit north/south logistics for Bakhmut, it's not really the place you're going to see massive break through that destabilizes the front line. Even with the portion of Soledar the Russians control, the Ukes still have the railroads and roadways to Bakhmut anyway.

Maybe I'm missing something specific about Soledar, but it really doesn't seem like the kind of place that's going to precipitate a major offensive operation.

            >missing something specific about Soledar
and a bunch of other similar posts mystified about Soledar:

            The. Salt. Mines.

It is very nearly the only location in Ukraine where they can build up a fortified ammo & equipment dump.

The trick here is going to be to deny them that opportunity. Let them keep & keep defending Soledar ... and make it bloody expensive ... but do not allow ammo & equipment to reach Soledar and get stored inside the salt mines. Blast everything in-transit, seal the entrances with aggressive bombardment.

Deny, deny, deny. Make them pay in blood for every hour they attempt to leverage that as a secure bunker. WITHOUT destroying the salt mines themselves ... it's a very important economic resource in several different ways. They need to be preserved for re-opening after the war is ended.

I'm sorry. I mean, I don't remember exactly what you're talking about, but I generally recall some of that.

I personally would not have been all that mocking, except for the invasion by sea of Odessa and the occupation of the Red Forest. I was pretty amused by that idiocy and openly mocked anyone who was suggesting those specifically. Which also included the tens of thousands of troops swarming in from Transnistria.

And then, the vatBlack folk did exactly that for the Red Forest and fell so hard on their faces in Odessa that it effectively didn't happen at all. Apart from a division or three of VDV transitioning to underwater territory denial. Plus, without Odessa there was no prayer of Transnistria happening.

And THEN, picrel happened. Also. That's when I stopped believing there was a bottom to the stupidity.

Well, Wagner's leader Prozakob***h couldn't resist spitting in the face of Russia's military by claiming all the credit for Soledar. So Russia's military spit in his face back by saying, "We did all the work, loser."

So now Soledar has become a pissing contest between Wagner and the Ministry Of Defense, with BOTH their reputations on the line.....for a fricking mining village.

Put simply, the Ukrainians can exploit the Vatnik egos to make them defend this little nothing town. Neither Wagner nor the Russian military want to be the one who "lost Soledar" because they know their rival will use it against them.

of course, each of the steps is going to run into heavily fortified positions along the way

in terms of overall strategic importance bakhmut is a stepping stone to the twin cities south of the oskil river, soledar is important on the local level in terms of being able to take bakhmut. if bakhmut is taken, the russians then have a much much larger and more difficult battle on their hands to really break the front wide open

Can the Russians hold it? This time the Ukrainians have the precision artillery they did NOT have at Severodonetsk.

The IRONY is that if Russia hadn't blown Soledar way out of proportion, they could have just calmly focused on the next step.

But political rivalries and petty bickering, as well as the desperate need for ANY kind of win, resulted in the Russians severely blowing Soledar out of proportion.

Soledar's a stepping stone, not a major prize like Wagner is trying to make.

and it wasn't the first choice too, it was because Bakhmut was way too hard at 4 times the size

Imagine being the 46th airmobile brigade calmly swatting small recon squads and then suddenly the while Wagner and thousands of VDV appear over the horizon

There is some stationed in bakhmut, I think. Although targeting soledar is for regular artillery than missile strikes. They should save himars for important targets or if the have those shotgun misssiles that is filled with metal balls.

Agreed. Let regular artillery hammer the Vatniks at Soledar. Keep drawing them in like a moth to a flame.

        >if bakhmut is taken
That will already be a drawn out battle which will dwarf Soledar. AND they will have to continuously defend Soledar while attempting to assault Bakhmut.

Vatniggistan hasn't even taken Soledar YET, and it's already a Pyrrhic assault without any gain to speak of. They've literally created their own cauldron and jumped into it.

Zisters...did...did the cauldron stab us in the back? Tell me this isn't true...

because psionic weapon is still a weapon, they felt my righteous hatred and necked themselves en masse so i'm gonna say it once again:
    kill russian toddlers
wipe this parasite nation off this planet
let russia crumble and be forgotten for eternity
    amen

Because first days urban fights were for the sake of winning some time and establishing proper defensive lines on the other side of the city.
Ukies just retreated there then and kept smoking vatnik hordes like they did before.

What this battle showed me is that even when Russians supposedly "regain the initiative", they still seem to have given up on armored pushes. It's infantry, mostly on fricking foot and artillery. How are they planning to exploit successes like this if they don't use mechanized forces?

    >did the Soledar offensive stall?
When did this get called "the Soledar offensive?" Wasn't this "the Bakhmut Offensive" just two weeks ago?

Maybe they were desperate for winning "something", and as soon as they were able to put a flag in the center of Soledar they just said mission accomplished. What else can they do now?
