Genuinely what reason is there to give F35s to the USMC rather than just having them rely on the USAF/USN? I'm not really that familiar with US force structure, but surely that would just make it more complicated for ground forces calling in air strikes if they had to be in contact with three different forces rather than one. Obviously mogging every other airforce in the world by having three separate US branches be bigger (maybe four, can't remember how many crafts your army actually has) is funny, but is it actually efficient?

      [...]
Does the 24/27 for UK include those present in the Fleet Air Arm or is it just RAF

If I remember correctly. there's some sort of weird force sharing agreement between the Navy and the RAF at the moment, although whether that will continue when the full order of F35s is delivered is anyone's guess.

        >but surely that would just make it more complicated for ground forces calling in air strikes if they had to be in contact with three different forces rather than one.
That's the point. They give the USMC their own planes so that the dickhead on the ground will have a radio directly to the dickhead in the air because they both came off the same boat.

I mean fair enough if you don't want to pull tard rangling duty on a strategic scale, but what about the Army and US allies? Is the Marine AF expected to deal with Marine shit first and leave everything else to other aviation assets or does the US just have another airforce in theatre to flex?

            >or does the US just have another airforce in theatre to flex?
Generally yes. We'll fly from wherever we have to, we invented mid-air refuelling for a reason. Also, the army has it's own rotary aviation, and when it has to, JTACs also have their own radios directly to flying dickheads.

            >Is the Marine AF expected to deal with Marine shit first and leave everything else to other aviation assets
I'm not sure what your asking. Every branch is tasked with their objectives until given new objectives. If those objectives are to assist other US military or allied military assets then that's what they do. The idea of the USMC having their own aircraft is that they are reaponsible for taking and securing beachheads, they're the first wave. To do that requires airpower and specialized ships. The Air Force doesn't have time to fly halfway across the world to drop cluster bombs on some chinks holed up in a pillbox on a random island somewhere and the USN needs their aircraft for CAP and interception of dangers to the fleet itself. If the Marines are going to be on that island anyway they might as well be operating aircraft on that island as it makes it easier for them to secure it. There's a reason most of their F-35s are the STOVL version: short, hastily constructed runways on islands and their amphibious assault ships.

Also the US Army does not operate armed, fixed wing, aircraft. They aren't traines in amphibious assault either.

              >Also the US Army does not operate armed, fixed wing, aircraft. They aren't traines in amphibious assault either.

I think this is what's getting me anon. Like, I understand that the USMC has a long history behind it and a lot of esprit de corps, the Royal Marines have the same thing, but ultimately nowadays amphibious assault is a very limited discipline. Apart from China I genuinely can't think of a country that could resist amphibious assault even from relatively untrained forces. Russia has a handful of dogshit coastlines and little naval presence to speak of that couldn't be wiped out in the first hour or so of an invasion. Iran, North Korea, and Venezuela are all memes that could have their pitiful naval defense wiped out easily. Even China is unlikely to be able to resist a massive influx of invasion troops after a few beachheads are established.

So why send so many assets to the USMC versus the other branches? I'm sure there are perfectly sensible reasons for giving them their own fixed wing force, but then why not supply the army with one as well?

                it is until it isn't
also, do not think of the american military as directly countering or built for a specific purpose
the US military is budgeted and intended to be dominant, overwhelming and without peer in every sense and in every possible scenario now and in the future

don't try to make sense of it, just know that taxpayers pay into an endless void, and somewhere along the way to lockmart someone buys a few billion dollars worth of whatever they feel like that day

                >So why send so many assets to the USMC versus the other branches?
Because they don't? They Marines don't get much money relative to the other three. The US has a big economy and a lot of people. What seems like a lot of money to you is not necessarily a lot to us.

                Anonymous

                >but then why not supply the army with one as well?
Because the Air Force threw a shit fit. The Army is allowed to have helicopters but agreed to not fly armed fixed wing aircraft during spats with the AF post WW2. The Air Force is fine with the Marines having them because the Marines are officially part of the Navy and "the Navy shouldn't have fixed wing planes" is an argument that would be dead on arrival. The Navy is fine with the Marinea having fixed wing aircraft because, even though the Marines are part of the Navy, they don't want to babysit them.

America's largest threats are China and North Korea. Both might require amphibious assaults, particularly the later.

I guess Russia is next on the list followed by Iran. Russia at least might require landings off the Black Sea or in the north, or in the east.

Fantastically lucky. The enemy being moronic and not mining the harbor or even defending it, plus having absolutely zero humint, aerial recon, or naval recon is what made that possible. It would have been a disaster if it was mined and contested, since it was a difficult landing just due to the geography and tides.

It literally comes down to a time in WW2 where the marines repeatedly asked for air support while taking an island and the Navy basically told them to cope and deal with it because they were too busy fighting japanese Zero fighters to spare dive-bomb missions on japanese positions. So the marines took some heavy losses and REEEE'd really, really hard until they got their own planes and helos for their marine carriers, where before the Navy had basically promised to support them. The Marines felt that the Navy betrayed that promise, and so they decided the rational response was to demand their own airforce.

It's been said more than once that the USMC only exists because it's good at self-promotion. The fact someone took a picture of the Iwo Jima flag raising probably kept most of its functions from being absorbed by the other service branches after WW2.

The Marines have managed to keep themselves around as having a fairly unique role of being a self contained, mini Airforce, Navy, and Army all in one command structure which allows them to be deployed anywhere in the world within... 48 hours, I think for a MEU? This level of rapid response and flexibility is handy, and them all being under a single command structure prevents a lot of slap fights over who's in charge, who's funding it, and so on that would arise if we actually let the Airforce, Navy, and Army just have joint operations in such a way. There's also just the inertia of Marines exist, so they get to keep on existing.

China potentially based on spending and numbers, but depending on how good their AA stuff is and new birds, it is going to be ROK or Japan.

I feel like China has the same problem as Russia, where they're largely cut off from international arms development. For example, development of the F35 required engineers from UK and Aus, which likely meant a certain amount of shared info. Maybe the memes about stolen tech can carry them through, but I don't think a single country can out-engineer the entire first world.

Mainland China now produces more engineers and technicians than "the entire first world" combined, and they no longer lose all of their best-and-brightest to brain drain (many of whom return anyway). They've pretty much closed the talent gap with the West, now they just need to keep stealing IP and/or independently developing their own equivalents until they reach direct parity.

How sad is it that how many F35's you have is now the literally measure of an airforces strength. That such a fricking failure of a program purely by the technological distance to its opponents capabilities has created the current dominant weapon of airwar. Even the US's failures outpace our enemies.

Not him but guessing he means that it was a failure compared to what it could be, but technologically outclassed everything else enough to dominate completely. Not many examples to go off of in history, but it would be like giving people who had small trebuchets a mortar piece. Yes, a large mortar is better than a trebuchet but a small cannon or long barreled cannon would be much more useful. Dedicated platforms will always out perform multi-tools like the F-35, which was tasked with being able to do so many things it is a miracle that someone was even able to get it to fly, while a not failure would be making a dedicated stealth fighter, deep penetration stealth bomber (the current main role given to it), stealth interceptor, Stealth STOL and VTOL craft. Problem with that is while it would be far better for the roles to go with dedicated platforms, it is logistically and economically infeasible for peacetime militarys.

Japan is a vanguard but needs to be on a tight leash due to trust issues lingering from WW2 (the redpill is that the US is the country that stopped Japan from becoming a world power and everybody implicitly knows this even if its not talked about in proper company)

SK is the other vanguard but also needs to be on a leash for different reasons, memes aside SK is far more militaristic than Japan and they are more likely to trigger a large scale war than most other western nations even more than the US, but for this reason SK is perceived as the "stronger" asset in a combat scenario if they are fully aligned with the US

South Korea definitely "likes" the US better than China on a grassroots level, there's always a minority but the vast majority of SK people have favorable opinions on the US and unfavorable opinions on the China, in fact some international surveys indicate that SK "hates" China more than any other country does in the world, its usually either SK or Japan that "wins" the hate China polls

But they are also hyper-capitalists even more so than the US so will try to play Switzerland where they were technically neutral but did business with both the Allies and Nazis

But more to your point the real risk in SK today is that if NK did attack to include with nukes the US may not necessarily get militarily involved which is placing enormous pressure from the SK people to arm up with nukes as well

Thank you for being the only one to recognize that I was talking about political maneuvering and policies instead of how much your average korean or japanese likes each other. For what it's worth when I spent some time living in both countries the overwhelming majority of people I interacted with felt very positively about each other's countries and had either visited or hoped to visit them. Any angst between the two seems to be the result of a rapidly dying off handful of elderly as well as intentional pot stirring by certain politicians for points/distracting from their own shortcomings. While I understand Korea having to walk a fine line due to their proximity physically and economically to China, as you've said the Koreans have gone so hypercapitalist that I worry every time their administration changes; however I'm cautiously optimistic that Yoon and Kishida might be able to finally bury the hatchet and get Korea and Japan solidly back into trilateral cooperation with America.

The redpill is that Korea, and SK in particular, are genetically almost the same as Japan, and in particular Honshu/Kyushu/Shikoku, NK is genetically closer to Manchus/Mongols/Siberians, both SK and NK share a language and there is substantial genetic overlap as well, but other than a handful of families historically from the border regions, are essentially two different ethnic groups

                >The redpill is that Korea, and SK in particular, are genetically almost the same as Japan,
The redpill is that even "Japanese" is a meaningless term when you're talking about east asian politics. I understand that this is almost impossible to understand coming from a country that uses terms like "White" and "Black", but if you want to understand the actual thoughts that drive east asians, and east asian policy, you need to be able to break down sentences like this.
                >We are not going to let someone from the buraku become the prime minister, are we?

The idea that Koreans and Japanese are similar enough genetically to be socially relevant is laughable everywhere other than America and the parts of Europe that follow American politics.

Its far more complex than that, Australia is borderline compromised with Chinese influence, far more than any other western nation, there is a proxy cold war occurring in Australia which will likely determine which side prevails long-term, an Australia that is a Chinese client state in 50, 100+ years will have as many Chinese in Australia as there are people in the US at some point, the whole narrative about amount of "liveable" space in Australia is fakenews, NSW and Victoria alone are the size of Japan and SK and probably has more available natural resources too, Japan and SK together have 175 million people, let that sink in

How is Israel, which is the size of a single city, fielding a better air force than almost any country? Their pilots seem top tier too historically.

How is it that they have a third of the Russian defense budget, and a tiny fraction of the population, but they can actually mobilize a larger army and their soldiers actually have optics, armor, and working vehicles?

Like, where did all the roubles go? Is having God tier israeli accountants to make sure your countries MIC doesn't steal/waste all the defense money actually more important than most other defense things?

when my father was a conscript in hungarian peoples army in 80s, they did the same shit rooster soldiers do now: do bare minimum of work, steal and sell fuel and any tools, and having lot of their time forced to spend doing pointless, timewasting, punitive activities.

as for higher up stuff, its petty corruption and general slavic incompetence. don't get me wrong, Russians have(well, had) genius engineers and scientists, but unless pressured like in WW2, they just can't see through such a complex project like building and maintaining thousands of T-14s.

As for Soviet stuff, they may have huge stockpiles but how useful most of that is after 30 years of questionable storage, anyone can see its results.

A Hungarian milblogger said it sarcastically: "Yeah, maybe thew latest 9k3593JT1 Komplexum "Nuzajec" is awesome on paper, too bad there's not enough O rings and DOT3 fluid to make it actually go".

israel neighbors wouldnt want to kill them if israelites did not take every opportunity to steal and occupy the surrounding natives lands. israel and israelites have always been a good puppet of the west and starting wars to fit western agenda and have gotten so many reparations and handouts from the west that its no wonder, of course now they are more independent after these years handouts and reparations.

The first thing Israel's neighbours did upon the declaration of it's independence was to illegally occupy Palestine (The Egyptians in Gaza, the Jordanians in the West Bank) then attempt to do the same against Israel. By 1967 the calculus was that those shitty neighbors could get fricked, and the Palestinian independence can be sorted out after. But then Israel's ultra-nationalists murdered Yitzchak Rabin, and won the propaganda war within Israel thanks to the intifadas.

why didn't israelites ever fight back in europe? wonder what made them so strong they barely lifted a finger during holocaust

Yeah, but the Russian defense budget is that much bigger with all the US aid included.

Jews did fight in WWII. They fought in the Soviet military in large numbers, in the Polish military, for the UK, USA, etc. The Germans began killing israeli civilians after those militaries had been defeated and driven from the areas in question.

Even then, there were camp uprisings, as a prolonged uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto. However, it's hard to beat a 20thv century military without weapons.

Same with WWI and the pogroms. israelites backed the Black Army because it banned pogroms.

No, the F-35s are replacements for retired F-4s and early model F-15s not upgradable to JSI (Japanese equivalent of EX) while F-3s replace F-2s. The big order for F-35 was placed in 2018, and the F-X program started in 2020, so it's clear they are going to procure both, and having both 6th generation air dominance fighters and 5th generation strike fighters is reasonable.
Also, the fighter fleet wouldn't be an exception to the massive buildup they are planning, I reckon the JASDF fighter fleet from the mid 30s will be 150-200 F-3s, 150-200 F-35s, and 100-ish F-15JSI which will most likely be replaced by F-3s eventually.

The reason F-16 is favored over better jets is because it is so economical. And economy, not specs, is king in war. This is the biggest reason why the axis lost ww2. They just couldnt keep up with superior allies production despite most of their shit being better on paper.
In a theoretical chink vs nip air assets only battle, the japs would win but it would be due to the superiority of F-15 and F-35, not the f2. If anything, the f2 would be a huge liability as it is so expensive to replace so that once it is damaged or shot down, it is either down for good or a bigger drain to the country than other jets.
The f2 is entirely a showpiece for jap nationalists to drool over. Even as countries around the world are scouring the world for more F-16s, literally nobody, not even the japs mention the f2 because of how much of a failure it is.

The F-16 is also a good fighter though. Is the F-2 a terrible fighter or good fighter?

It's got a larger wing and serves mostly as a bomb truck for antiship cruise missiles, not a fighter. Hence the blue camo.

                >job in the air
f2 is not combat proven and potentially never will be. Can it fly and fire missiles? Yes, but so can chink and pajeet shit. Doesnt make any of them good planes.
But the main point is that output is always relative to input. Thats why the anon focused on cost and logistics.
Why have a jet that is a copy of a well-proven jet and yet is more expensive with less functionality? Cost alone makes it a liability in a war and war is a fighter jets primary purpose.

A US made F16 maybe, but a Japan made F16 would not want to be the pilot flying that into a real combat situation, keep in mind the F16 is 1970s vintage, a great combat jet fighter but need to put a lot of the latest toys on it to be effective against modern adversaries today something only the US has the know-how to do

              >cope
              Nice projection.

              >F-2 is a worse F-16 even though they worked with lockheed to make it. Also one of the most overpriced jets of all time.
The F-2 only resembles the F-16 in shape, practically it's a different fighter with different fuselage, different wings made of different materials, different avionics, different missiles, etc, and it's the world's first AESA equipped fighter. Some of its technologies, originally developed for completely indigenous FS-X fighter, were so advanced (equal to or even more advanced than US counterparts in development) that the Americans were surprised and brought it back to the US, which demonstrates Japan's fighter manufacturing capability is top-notch if not superior to the US overall.
And the F-2 is expensive because they had to pay hefty license fees for the forced F-16 reference which they didn't even need in the first place, and forced work sharing with US companies also made supply chain more complex and high cost. As such, it was destined to be expensive, it's not Japan's fault but the US intervention out of fear of the 80s Japan fricked it up. Had it not for the intervention Japan would've made a more affordable Rafale/Typhoon like twin-engine 4.5th generation fighter they had already designed, and the US already knew in the 90s that Japan had no trouble building an indigenous next generation fighter (5th gen at the time) by itself, so it's no surprise they are working on a 6th gen now. It's a detailed RAND study, worth reading, at least more than your delusions.

              >X-2 was so shitty that even the japs didnt want it.
As the name shows the X-2 is an eXperimental aircraft, a stealth technology demonstrator, not a prototype fighter or anything. It's part of preliminary study for the F-X.

                >jap talking about the f-2: NOOOOOO! nip jets are so advanced that the Americans copied us!
                >jap talking about the x-2: NOOOOOO! It was just experimental, we didnt actually want to make a 5th gen. We totally could because America-sama acknowledged us but we just didnt want to even though ours would have been better.
So even though the nips have imaginary tech that America was jealous of, the nips still had to go crawling to bongs for help on their latest jet? Are you perhaps related to armatard?
Next time, jap, if you have nothing to say then just shut the frick up.

not really, only a handful of countries have the technological and industrial bases essential to producing a fully domestic 5/6th gen fighter from scratch. a 5/6th generation class engine alone would reduce it to 7 or 8 countries.

To think Japan can actually produce an indigenous 6th gen when the last indigenous fighter was the zero is delusional, its possible they can eventually develop a 6th gen but it won't be until the world is at 7th gen realistically

Japan is growing the budget but even if it gets to ~$80 billion, that is not enough to fund 147 additional F35s, expansion/modernization of naval surface fleet, and massive growth in land based missile defense capabilities + a 6th gen fighter, to give context the current UK defense budget is $65 to $70 billion which is close to Japan's aspirational levels

If anything Japan needs to get serious about defense, as an example Japan has decent conventional submarines EXCEPT they only have torpedos no SLBM capabilities whatsoever, effectively useless for offensive operations

          Anonymous

Precisely why any indigenous fighter development program by Japan or even the UK is symbolic and really their way to ask for more F35s, its painfully obvious by their allocated development budgets approved let alone actually funded

        Anonymous

The aircraft inventory count is fluid so other countries will grow their air force fleets too, but F35 orders should not be counted until actually delivered since some of the delivery dates are 2030+, by then the current F35s will be a half gen behind whatever the latest available combat aircrafts are so the value of 147 F35s today is far different than say 147 F35s in 2030+ when there will be a few countries with meaningful numbers of aircraft that outperform the F35s of today

But yes Japan is growing its military budget and is targeting 2% of gdp within 5 years which is $80 billion to $90 billion, Germany is as well and their budget will be $70 to $80 billion, this is larger than any country except the US and China

The other heavyweight military budgets in ~5 years are India $70 to $80 billion, Russia $70 to $80 billion (if they are still a nation by then), UK $65 to $75 billion, SK, $65 to $75 billion, France $60 to $65 billion, and Saudi Arabia $60 to $65 billion

Not an American military enthusiast but the only way I see Ukraine getting F-35s is if somehow Trump becomes president while the war is still ongoing and Zelensky bribes Kushner to convince Trump to sign some papers without him noticing.

The big problem is training pilots from slavshit to F-35.

I don't think it's financially or politically impossible, but it would just be difficult to get it up and running any time soon.

I foresee Ukraine getting early block F-16s, but they need to be trained to fix them and have the logistics to do so. F-35s are out of the question. The best operational plan is to get Poland and the likes to get rid of their Soviet/Russian-equipment for newer F-16s.

Trump and Zelensky were already working together on stuff in Trump's first term. That's what made Democrats ape out and impeach him. It's not up to the President, though - fighter jet exports are controlled by Congress. The only way the President sends fighter jets overseas is deploying them.

This is a laughable attempt at air power rankings

India is at #4 when combining all US branches and Chinese branches, just lmfao

      Here's India operational aircraft inventory:
      36 Rafales
      272 SU30s
      32 Tejas
      65 MIG29s
      51 Mirages
      130 Jaguars
      72 MIG21s

The textbook definition of a thirdie air force.

Compare to Netherlands air force which is not even on the list:
21 F35s (we more on order)
      40 F16s

All quality combat aircraft with a healthy mix of the only 5th gen other than the F22 which is not available for export.

    Unironically Israel

    1.) 300 aircraft, very large
2.) All of them are modern, most modern stuff rivals USAF/USN
    3.) Great AWAC/EW support
    4.) Lots of experience

China is getting there but still lacks experience or the EW ability.
