This but unironically, ukes are going to abandon 5.45x39 anyways (they had their own AR variant prior to the war already) and americans will be happy to dump their surplus on them.

This is most likely. Once they are completely phased out, they will ship them by the tens of thousands to every strategic ally starting with the Ukies.

It would be pretty awesome if they converted them to civilian-legal semi-autos and sold them for cheap honestly, but they won't.

CMP should at the very least sell parts kits of old guns, any semi autos and single action guns that are within use of the US military. Too bad republicans only pretend to care about guns and the CMP is ran by selfish geriatrics

Given their position I get it, but what a bunch of gays. It's the standard arm these days. What good does it do training people to use M1's when they'd be using an AR platform if they were ever drafted?

            Anonymous

Using them as military aid would be more beneficial than the government buying new semi auto lowers and possibly barrels, then paying a guy to swap out the parts, just to sell what would still be a used gun with tens of thousands of rounds through it on a market that's already flooded before considering the amount of surplus they'd be dumping onto it.

they legally cant because the atf is moronic

all of them are "machine guns". The ATF considers the barrels "machine gun barrels". almost none of the parts can be reused for civilian purposes, they all must be destroyed. Except maybe small stuff like furniture.

Why is that? I bought a M16a1 kit without a barrel or receiver, and that’s only two other parts you need to buy

          Anonymous

The ATF randomly decided to decree that like 8(?) years ago because they were asshurt about how many easy to build parts kits were available on the market. You used to be able to buy parts kits with everything except the receiver intact prior to that.

Probably continue to sit in warehouses and occasionally get sent to allies or prospective allies until they're all gone. I'd love it if they would make them semi-auto and sell them on the civ market but at this point the correct portion of the GOP would have to win basically everything for us to even have a shot. Even if the NFA is killed and MGs are 100% legal I doubt they'd hit the civ market, lot of people in government that would rather see them reduced to ingots than in civilian hands no matter how much we're willing to pay for them.

I'm sure the government can tell the government to get fricked on this one special occasion. Problem is we know they won't.

ATF still tries to push random rulings onto others all the time. They recently convicted some poor guy that was selling older saw cut guns and charged him as an illegal machine gun dealer. They even claimed he had a destructive device since he had an m79 frame and a barrel in a separate place

The military/fed is the ATF’s boss. They’ll do what they’re told. The real reason is neither side wants this.

Can't convert them due to the once a machine gun, always a machine gun rule. Lower Receiver would have to be chopped up. Also ATF claims the barrel is part of the machine gun, at least for imports and may try to push that ruling even on these to have them chopped up as well.

      >converted them to civilian-legal semi-
Can't do that since the once a machine gun rule. The lowers have to be torched according to atf. They also ban barrels on imports and claim they are part of the machine gun and they will probably try to apply that here as well.

Where does it say “once a machine gun always a machine gun” in the law. AFT opinion isn’t law. Laws are passed by congress and signed by a president.

It's what I hope. They did it for old m16s that you can buy here in europe. Yet I never saw a real m4a1 here.

all of them are "machine guns". The ATF considers the barrels "machine gun barrels". almost none of the parts can be reused for civilian purposes, they all must be destroyed. Except maybe small stuff like furniture.

Someone could do that if they aim to sell them here in the EU.

Or if they just torch cut the lower receivers and threw away the full auto bits from the FCG and sold them like that. That 922r rule wouldn't apply to these since every part was built in America, right?

        Anonymous

They would be entirely legal to sell in the US. Honestly the only reason the CMP isn't giving these out with a semi auto only lower is because the government is run by buttholes

Technically there's nothing illegal with owning the full auto trigger parts and even the sear. as they can't be installed in a semi auto lower. However, ATF has in the past tried to use it as constrictive possession when someone has a semi auto lower as well in possession as an easy charge to throw on.

Used in training and/or handed down to national guard units, non-infantry units that don't need the latest and greatest infantry small arms, etc etc. Basically they'll be used until they fall apart and scrapped as they wear out.

And no, you're never going to see them sold off en masse to civilians. They might get handed out as lethal aid to a 3rd party in some future conflict, though, but not anytime soon.

      Anonymous

      >Handed down to national guard and reserves
The majority of National Guard and Army Reserve rock M4a1s exclusively at this point. Very few have M16s let alone M16a2 rifles. Even medical support units that mostly mob and demob, a unit that will likely never fire their rifles in anger, have M4a1s now

      >They might get handed out as lethal aid to a 3rd party in some future conflict, though, but not anytime soon.

A positive consequence of this would be to "encourage" a nation to adopt NATO weapons as standard and let go of whatever they are using. This most likely would mean a nation drops their Soviet weaponry and adopts NATO weaponry to replace it. Ukraine is using up all of its Soviet leftovers and is going to be a NATO nation from here on out, if you want a relevant example.

The Ukraine-Russian war has been an extremely important reminder in the value of stockpiling things "just in case", so my guess is that we'll just keep them by the hundred thousand or so just in case a prospective ally needs M16s yesterday. You never know when you're going to make a new friend, and you never know when that friend may be in an active war with the russians or chinese or iranians.
