So this is one of the sexiest guns ever made, but would it really have been so impossible to mount a laser sight below the barrel?

Did you recently watch The Terminator for the first time? That laser has a battery life of, like, five minutes. You'd need to hook it up to a much larger energy supply and run the cable through your sleeve or something if you want it to last longer

The person who modeled the remake guns probably googled "magnum 1911" and went from there.

That was considered a very compact cutting edge laser at the time.

At least the height of the grip mount makes it so you can still use the irons.
The laser does make it a little unwieldy, but it's not too bad.
Only thing I hate about mine is the repro laser sucks and doesn't retain zero, but not many people make a proper repro LP-7 laser so I had to make due with a Taiwanese airshit repro.

Maybe it's just me but does anyone else think that would look sexy with a full blued gun and mount with a steel weaver? Or maybe a parkerized 1911 with a steel weaver, whatever. Shame my gay state doesn't like semi auto handguns for hunting so there's little point in me doing such a thing.

I don't think it's the same guy but I've heard the story you're describing for sure. The guy in the meme is Dirlewanger, insane pedo, necrophiliac, nazi that was captured while trying to hide out in rural Germany. He died in French prison just after the war but before the trials. He was beaten to death by the other inmates.

What's the best laser pointer that'll get me close to mimicking this, including being able to mount on a ring and adjust for windage and elevation?

      Anonymous

I think the closest lookalike would be a low-power scope. That would also fit scope rings perfectly, which is what the mount is made from if you look closely. Take the lenses & shit out of the scope and stick a modern LED powered laser sight inside it.

Not practically, no. A contemporary AR15 laser went from the carry handle all the way to the front sight, and most civilian lasers (the ones you would have in school science labs) were the size of a microwave oven. Even the one in the movie isn't entirely "real", as it had a cord running up Arnolds sleeve and down his leg to an external battery, since the actual batteries were too temperamental and short-lived.

Lasers of that era were He-Ne tube type, those required very high voltage to start and run which is really what complicated the power supply. It wasn't just a bunch of batteries that were needed, there was also electronics to bring up the low DC voltage of the batts up to a couple thousand volts to power the tube. That was really the problem. The laser tube itself required very little power, but getting that high voltage from batteries was terribly inefficient.

post how you would have done it back then

NTA, It's not difficult in the slightest, it would just look really stupid because of how far the laser would stick forward under the barrel.
I can think of two ways to mount it off the top of my head:
      1) Build up the thickness of the dust cover with weld. Drill and tap, bolt the rings to that.
      2) Build a goofy-ass bracket that mounts to the grip, just like they did it but curved forward and down instead of up.

so either do the exact same thing they already did, or permanently modify the gun which was the opposite of what they were trying to accomplish

Lmao the technology for the laser in Terminator to work as depicted in the movie literally did not exist yet, this is what the full prop actually looked like. Arnold had to route the leads up his jacket sleeve and actuate the remote switch with his left hand, and the battery was concealed in his jacket.

A laser small enough to fit on a handgun with an integrated switch and battery was literal sci fi tech in 1984 when this was filmed. Surefire had to prototype up this unit from scratch and this was cutting-edge portability at the time.

Giving modern advancements in equipment it would be possible to make a Hardballler 1911 style Laser sight without the large battery attached.
