So, now that the Zelynsky line has been broken by the retreat from Soledar, can we say that the Russians actually fight quite well?

So, now that the Zelynsky line has been broken by the retreat from Soledar, can we say that the Russians actually fight quite well?

I mean everytime they actually commit to a fight, they actually bring it to a grinding victory even if that costs like over 9000 vatniks and a million artillery rounds per square kilometers. On the other hand, all Ukrainian victories so far are not as hard earned and were result of Russian voluntary retreats and mistakes, like leaving 200 men to defend 300km of frontline while the rest got demobilized etc.

I dont support anyone in this war, but I got to say that the Vatniks are a pretty good WWI siege army lmao.

It's the core vatBlack person mentality and common cause with the right wing. Why work when you can murder, rape, and loot? It's not like there could be consequences or anything. Ukraine was part of the coalition of the willing in iraq, so thats something. Although if people want something more official, they should read the 1991 treaty in exchange for their nukes. Crimea was a big deal because that treaty was broken by russia and now the U.S. is the only one obliging by it.

Most of the material was already bought and paid for. If it wasn't being used by Ukraine, much of it would have probably just sat in storage until it expired or became obsolete. And we are getting a metric frickton of legit performance data. The next generation of equipment will be informed by actual combat.

                Anonymous

Exactly. The west had little problems sustaining 15 years of GWOT at that cost. Of course eventually new equipment will need to be produced large scale which would in turn drive prices up.
It is highly unlikely that Russia can sustain war until that point is being reached, though. What are they going to do, send T62s against Leo2a4/M1a1 and trade favorably?

Mate, you're celebrating taking over a a town that you could probably walk trough in 40 minutes with a dog that needs to piss on every lamp post.
I could run trough Soledar in 10 minutes, with easy pace.
Mate, what the frick are you celebrating about? How long did this dog walk take russians to cross?
How long have you tried to take Soledar?
Was it done in less that 40 minutes?
How much slower are russians compared to a pissing dog?

That is just a small part of the picture. Russia has been unable to perform any offensive on a operational level in more than half a year. How are the going to take substantial ground, with infantry walking very slowly at the enemy and barraging them with heavy artillery?

Losses not immediate losses but what is now the predicted losses Russia is going to have IS the reason, because the quantity of manpower losses to achieve advances is so great it's impossible for Putin to achieve the most minimal political objectives of the war. Therefore to occupy all of donesk and luhansk has to be scrubbed from the political narrative in Russia, and the discourse shifted to a new narrative, what that narrative is hasn't been figured out, so the troll farms are just spinning in circles waiting for instruction. Ultimately Putin will have to gamble again (the wager being Russian lives ofc(Russians are too pathetic to say no anyway)) the current 500k crop of mobiks are already penciled in as future losses to hold existing occupied territory. 1million mobiks lost is the next linear bet for Putin, which just means USA provides hundreds more Bradley's. What does Putin bet after that? This is the question at the moment. Which is possibly Putin bets 2million. In which case what do you instruct the troll farms when it's likely they themselves will be sent into the earth in Ukraine, that's a difficult narrative to sell

They have been since the war started just like the other sides shills. It is war, people lie all the time.
The point is that the war has been a stalemate since the last ukrainian offensives and essentially nothing has happened. Which is bad for the russian PR effort. They are also running out of time because with every new batch of Ukrainians trained and supplied by NATO their initial material and industrial advantage is eroded. They are out of steam and likely even drafting another 500k conscripts will not help them regain the initiative.
The next interesting development will be to see the race to build up for the spring offensive and who gains the initiative there. My money is on Ukraine, but we will see.

          >this must hurt Russia
It does, because the bottleneck for supplying Ukraine with western equipment is training. The more Ukrainians are trained on western equipment, the more equipment can be sent. Time is Russia‘s worst enemy, because they cannot win a war of attrition against an enemy with a bigger industrial base, deeper pockets, more training capacity and larger stocks of equipment.

          >they are losing?
It means that they were not able to achieve their objectives with their initial troops and the first batch of Mobiks. Their biggest advantage was in the opening stages when they had the biggest material and industrial advantage, given that Ukraine was practically stuck on soviet legacy equipment with no production base to replenish losses.
Russia is increasing the number of troops relative to equipment, because they did not have sufficient troops to begin with and their organization was bad. Now they have burned through a lot of modern equipment while only achieving one early stage operational objective, creating a land bridge between Crimea and Donbas. Basic infantry holds ground, it does not attack because it can’t. Refer to WW1 for details. If Russia is mobilizing 500k soldiers, it CANNOT supply them with enough tanks and IFVs to create offensive formations. It likely cannot even make 50k into offensive formations. Which means they are stuck to where they are right now. Meanwhile Ukraine gets supplied to build mechanized formations, which are offensive in nature. Russia will dig in while Ukraine attacks, it is inevitable. Russia has lost the initiative and has no chances of getting it back operationally.

          >Ukraine has aid
As stated above, the bottleneck is training.
It makes zero sense to tell Russia 6-12 months in advance what you are going to send and when. Which is why material support is announced in small batches and on short notice. With small being brigade equivalents now.

How big is ukraine, how big is russia. Which can support a larger standing army and higher rates of attrition?

            >ukraine is getting large numbers of AFV's (doubt)
            >Russia has no productive capacity (/k/ope)
The army able to keep waging war at this intensity for a prolonged period is actually Russia. And it seems extremely doubtful that ukraine is going to be successful pushing them out of the east with an army around 600k in size stationed there

Unfortunately current loss ratio for russian forces is catastrophic if you consider that russian population is only barely 3 times bigger than ukraine (despite the bigger territory size). If the war continues like this without MAJOR breaking points...then the future is looking dire for Russia.

We need to change the k/d ratio in our favor...right now we are paying a heavy price for Soledar and Artemovsk, it's unsustainable to hope for the victory if so many troops and equipment are lost for each and every town...unless you are a falseflagging israelite that cheers the death of our warriors and slavic blood being spilled..
The only hope is that the west will finally wake up, stop supplying ukrops and China will stop cucking out and actually give us equipment and artillery ammo and rockets...

Of course not. They just keep saying that hoping someone on PrepHole is dumb enough to believe it.

In terms of protracted, static trench warfare like this, the attacking side pretty much ALWAYS suffers disproportionate casualties compared to the defenders. It's a basic rule of warfare.

                >They (ukrops) are losing equipment and personel quicker than us or at the very least the same rate as us
Citation needed. Defending is easier than attacking, so considering how long it took to breach defensive lines even in Soledar (literal months), it's logical to assume that the attackers suffered heavier losses. Otherwise, Bakhmut would have been captured months ago.

                lol. It's about 100k each.

In industrialized warfare, you can substitute material for men. The marginal rate of substitution varies, but within certain parameters reduce this to a simple formula: throwing money at the problem reduces the amount of people needed. The west can throw substantially more money at the problem, roughly 20 times the amount of Russia. We would need to know the exact substitution rate to know how much manpower advantage this negates, but even if it is 5:1, the countries already are at manpower parity. Add to that that industrial output potential, training capacity and access to resources. Russia CANNOT win a war of attrition. They cannot even replace combat losses in tanks with their factories, how are they supposed to arm 500k mobilized conscripts with anything other than small arms?
                >infantry cannot attack
It can’t on a operational level. Go study the last 120 years of warfare or join any army in a commissioned capacity, that is one of the first things they will teach you.
                >Ukraine is getting large numbers of AFVs
The last round of support was a medium brigade worth of stuff. And many more will follow. The US alone can supply multiple mechanized divisions just from storage. Again, the bottleneck is training, not equipment.
                >Russia has no production capacity
Nobody said that. The point is that Russia does not have enough production capacity to match the west. Which is why they cannot sustain attritional warfare against Ukraine. They will need to substitute men for material which is not a good trade given the lethality of modern material.

The war in Ukraine is a bargain. Overall, the western alliance has dropped what, roughly 2bln a week? That is GWOT money to cripple one of the two major contenders on the global stage. Any direct confrontation would have resulted in WW3, likely involving nuclear exchange. Meanwhile we get to crush Russia militarily for the cost of policing Tatooine. Nobody is ever going to stop dropping peanuts for that. Don’t forget that most of the military aid is drawn from stockpiles that have long been paid for. Financial aid is given as loans, with the collateral being one of the most productive farming areas in the world and substantial mineral and energy deposits.

The bottleneck is training, not material ready to ship. As nobody is going to give Russia a heads up on what we are actually planning to send, you will only get short notice on relatively small batches, like battalion or brigade equivalents in equipment. Offensive operations will likely not resume in the next three to four months. I am certain that there will be more equipment sent in that timeframe.

I'd say losing Bakhmut now wouldn’t be that big of a loss. So many vatniks died there and it's not even the main defense line. That's actually way behind the city.

Static defense lines don't really work when Russia has a near limitless amount of Mr Conscriptovich to probe for the weak points.
What is happening in Bakhmut can happen anywhere, if that is Ukraine's only defensive option they are up shit creek.

Bay of pigs invasion failure was a perfect example of a sitting elected official looking at his intelligence agencies plans and telling them straight up they're moronic and the military wouldn't support them. Cia going ahead anyway thinking he'd change his mind doesn't change that fact. Plus we still have Gitmo and always will lmao.

I for one am deeply concerned of nazikrainian losses in large metropolis of Soledar. it is time zelenskyy regime must come to very large and long table of negotiation with President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin and finally understand russian bear is not possible of stopping. see many dead bodies in oinkrainian telegrams and are unable to stop might of mobilization.

They've always fought well, at least the contract soldiers like the VDV and VMF. Despite losing, they lost only after fending off Ukrainian forces many times their size because the Russians had literally nobody else to send in because Russians always historically shit the bed during the opening of any military campaign. All the moronic propagandaposters will REEE at this post but I've stopped caring what those morons think after the first week of this war, and that was still when Russia looked like they were about to win it.

      >they lost only after fending off Ukrainian forces many times their size because the Russians had literally nobody else to send
What? They only lost after fending off. Those are mutually exclusive events. Regardless the reason they died was because the relief column which was marked to have arrived to support them in like 48hrs was nowhere near there.

There is a huge report about this. Russian troops were basically told to go to this place and get there in XX hours and given an old outdated map and told to figure it out. This didn't work. So it had nothing to do with 'not having anybody else to send' but to do with the fact the people they sent weren't anywhere near them when they needed to be.

As for 'Russians have always historically shit the bed during the opening' why has Russia lost more land than it gained in a shorter period of time? Shouldn't Russia be improving if your claim was correct? Russia has resorted to stealing tanks from India that it was obligated to deliver as India had paid for them.

Even if Russia magically takes all of Ukraine tomorrow it has been highly embarrassing and Russia is in a state now where they are in a serious problem. The longer they continue, the worse it'll get.

Russians are just terrible winners, that's all. The xoxol threads during the Kharkiv offensive at least had some substance and discussion (as well as actual footage).
But to be fair to the russians, if the DVD reserves keep up this pace, Soledar's most likely going to be taken this week.

Russia used their best units to take Soledar.
The penal battalions softened to defenses with some human waves, then the professionals went in and took the town. Veterans of the Syrian campaign, in groups of 8-10 men, they have hundreds of these guys. They're experienced and as well equipped as any Western soldier.
It's not a surprise the UAF had to retreat, most of their experienced soldiers died in the first month of the war.

NTA but Ukraine doesn't look like winning either. Right now, the dream of liberating Donbass and Crimea seems like a fairytale.
Russia is currently fielding mostly fresh conscripts who don't even have winter gear. AFU should be rolling over them, because if not now, then when?
Come spring these conscripts will be significantly more acclimatized and battle-hardened, and there's more on the way.

While Russia is building up, so is Ukraine. Mechanized offensives are 3-4 months in the future due to weather. Ukraine is gradually shifting away from soviet legacy gear while more and more troops are being trained and equipped by NATO.
Offensives take substantial time to be prepared. Failure to do so will result in debacles like the botched initial russian invasion. Ukraine has taken back a lot of territory in the past 3 months, too. Troops need to be rested, refitted and trained for the next objective. Overdoing it is actually detrimental to the overall campaign.
The most interesting development will be the next 2-3 months of gear deliveries to Ukraine.

                Anonymous

They don't need a breakthrough, they need to outlast Ukraine, which is doable with their massive advantage in potential conscripts.
Ukraine needs to attack while they still have parity in manpower and western support, neither which will last forever.

                Anonymous

That way Russia would have to reduce its war aims to holding a land bridge to Crimea.
Russia doesn’t have operational initiative anymore. All they can do in the grand scheme of things is dig in and try freezing the conflict. Ukraine keeps building up western supplied mechanized units which are offensive in nature and will inevitably be used in an offensive. The obvious and therefore somewhat unlikely operational plan would be to isolate Crimea by cutting the land bridge, practically undoing all russian territorial gains in the conflict. Status quo ante is hardly anything but total russian failure.
Reestablishing pre 2014 ukrainian borders is still a stretch, but substantially more likely than Russia achieving any of its war aims.

No no, this is just wrong. Ukraine lost operational initiative. Russia has it hence is attacking and dictating the battle.

It hasn't been broken though? As I understand it the first defensive line didn't even run through Soledar. It runs just past the railway. Soledar is just a defensible stronghold ahead of the lines. The primary defensive line is past the river, on the high ground, and quite frankly I don't see Russia breeching it.

Though quite frankly Russia getting all excited about breaching secondary and tertiary defensive lines in basically all they frickin got, because the entire fricking primary defensive line from April hasn't even been touched
