What went so wrong for Ukraine? What went finally right for Russia?
Is the surprise fall of Soledar comparable of the surprise Kharkov counte roffensive of the Ukrainians?

Soledar and Bakhmut possibly could fall and it still serves Ukraine now.

Ukraine fighting and grinding Russia in a slow Russian advance, is taken at US middle school level to be an understood part of the War, and Ukraine's strategy whenever they want.

Soon we shall all see it. To lose one of the Soledar is to sign a nation's death warrent. The last loss of a Soledar was in 1914 at the battle of Tannenberg, which also marked the first time a single nation (Germany) possessed two since the Roman Empire. This of course resulted in the collapse of Russia and the near-victory of the German Empire, but following their surrender thankfully the Russian Soledar was given to the League of Nations and later the UN.

But with Russia again in possession of a Soledar? It can only mean the tide has truly turned against Ukraine, and perhaps the west as a whole.

Mariupol tactics. Send off a suicidal rush of badly equipped infantry, the enemy wastes the frickers, pick off a few after they've revealed their position, rinse and repeat. Costly in manpower, but Wagner's prison b***hes are disposable human refuse.

        Anonymous

Yep. They'll flatten Bakhmut, make it through a defensive line or two, then run into Kramatorsk and stop for another 6 months. The tactic works as long as you never run out of manpower and the enemy never tries maneuver warfare.

If the enemy DOES try maneuver warfare you have to have a significantly larger force with ATGMs/artillery all over the place, or a few competent armored units to move around and stop breakthrough attempts as they happen. Both sides were great at this at the eastern front and it's most of the reason why Germany wasn't kicked out of Ukraine way sooner.

If you don't have competent units that can stop breakthrough attempts...

Speaking of that, has anyone made an up to date and credible map with Russian unit locations/equipment on it?

If I got this correct the mines are about 200 km long. that would take quite a lot of explosives to blow up. The real question is, is there any tunnel fighting going on?

Encircling Bakhmut was never on the menu. Taking Bakmut, Kramotorsk, and Sloviansk from Izyum was supposed to encircle Siversk.

Without Izyum, a breakthrough at Bakhmut would have to advance to Belgorod in order to complete the encirclement that was the goal back in June.

It's now been long enough since the last big Ukrainian offensive that the vatniks believe they can completely memoryhole the massive, humiliating territorial reverses they suffered at Kherson and begin claiming that they are winning the war again
You can expect shilling of this nature to gradually intensify both in volume and the absurdity of the claims until we reach the next big Ukrainian offensive, after which they will go dark for a few days and the cycle will begin again

It's almost incredible. Russians "likely control most of the (small) settlement" that *might* help them in their ongoing quest to encircle the city that is the seventh-largest in Donetsk (maybe like 40th in Ukraine?), and you would think they crushed Kharkiv, Dnipro, and landed in Odesa. it's quite funny to see russians be happy about soledar when it's quite obvious they are doing the same mistake they did before.
They probably moved a lot of troops from the rest of the front to put them around Bahkmut .. which means the Uki can now push somewhere else. and don't forget that a big concentration of russians at the same place is a gift sent for the HIMARS

Russians are already attacking Bakhmut and Soledar in mass. The "waiting out" theory is bullshit.
Why are they waiting out when the Russians are getting reinforced by 200k mobilised now (those who were trained and not sent to the front immediately)?
And there is half a million more coming. That's what Ukrainian channels say for weeks.
Also the ground is frozen now. If they wait until mud season they won't be able to attack for months. And by summer Russian infantry will be twice the current number.
And while HIMARS brought them closer to artillery parity, there is no one, even on the Ukrainian side, who claims, that they are the ones winning the artillery battles in the Donbass.
So no, waiting is not their choice.

We might not see major offensives for a while. November to January is when the ground is the most frozen typically. Remember how much trouble Russia had with the February mud last year. If any offensive were to be attempted, you'd have to guarantee it will be over in less than 4 weeks. Both sides already have lines established to the bahkmut area. Launching new attacks on other parts of the line would be very risky for either side. As it stands I'm not sure if Ukraine or Russia would risk the stabilized front line just yet, even if it means Ukes losing Bakhmut in the long run for another objective later. Hard to tell if that will pay off because Bahlmut sounds like it's been a slaughterhouse for everyone involved.

The convicts have to use the fat of executed Ukrainian POWs to keep warm because there's no dry firewood and MRE supply of solid fuel and ""'""edible""""" bacon&fat mix (which they literally only use as candle fuel, no one eats that shit even on a dare) is nowhere close to being sufficient. They want to live in houses where heat insulation is viable so they may not freeze to death. These guys have been making strides each time it gets cold and it's obviously not to do with off road capabilities of their vehicles because they've got none (jokes aside, the bukhanka goes over worse mud than the amtlebee can, which was built to be able to go anywhere)

The MTLB, affectionately called "amtlebee". It's a lightly armored tractor, known for virtually never getting stuck while being able to pull a tank, and for being the main target for any enemy anti armor weapon. It's downfall is weight - it's too heavy to go though particularly sloppy mud. Not bukhanka though, it hardly weighs anything.

Oh boy would you be in for a treat if Wagner was allowed to take (let alone release) footage. They execute surrendering hohols unless they have a special order to take POWs, and even then some of those get executed on the way, most get maimed before they even arrive for interrogation which of course involves more maiming. And when they're done answering questions they get executed anyway, often in much much worse fashion than just getting shot.

yeah and you know that because you've been extensively on the front line, and barely escaped being a POW

True. However, it's not fiction. Bizarre and grotesque shit happens at war. Civilian life is so far removed from the savage survival and wrathful retribution at war that they couldn't even believe such a thing can be real.

              >yes, however in the 1 in 10 engagements where we win, Wagner commits edgy warcrimes XD
see? no one fricking cares, the other 9 engagements where hundreds of wagner cuckolds and chomos are gunned down trying to run across open plains are still fun to watch, and fortunately those videos do get shared because Ukraine knows how to put on a good show

nothing in this sentence mentions to or implies gore except MAYBE "slaughtering"... which is a common phrase used to describe thoroughly defeating or eliminating an opponent, not Taliban-style executions
even if you interpret it as referring to gore, Russians post and share gore and torture videos regularly while Ukrainians avoid it, so going on and on about how epic and kewl Wagner gore would be makes no fricking sense

See youd have a point if the war started like that. Instead, we saw Russia grievously underestimate a peer force, under commit and under supply its key professional military forces, feed nearly every aspect of their war ready modernized forces into a meat grinder thats seen them so decimated that they've had to resort to multiple waves of mobilization and are clearing prisons out just to keep up with the rate of attrition. This is on top of having to abandon precision strikes on military infrastructure, in favor of mass bombing of civilian infrastructure, JUST to strain Ukraines effectiveness enough to reclaim some sort of momentum on the front.

Every russo cope just makes them look worse.

That 6 will turn to into 60 then 600 and more until the entire former so-called Ukraine is unraveled.
Face it, the Ukrainian offensive was not only stopped but now reversed. Finally the Russia has the initiative.

the ukraine is in tactical regrooooooping now, in utter shambles.
its really this simple, when an invaded and occupied nation has its only offensive reversed, its fundamental defeat.
the afu is defeated, in retreat
and civilians are on their 4th month of no power, water or sanitation.

the insane, racist "ethnic cleansing" of Russians on former ukrainian soil is officially over, and the only thing left is to watch nafo and the media squeal like pigs to try to drown out the screams of ukropian people suffering at home
