Not as important as Kyiv, Kharkiv, or Kherson.

Bakhmut means action moves to the next line of defense. Soledar means virtually nothing.
Neither is strategically critical, neither even taken still.

Well for russians or this case fagner CEO soledar and bakhmut are crucial due the salt mine and gypsum mine he wants to add to his personal war gains (around 4mil USD yearly profits) hence why he's so dead set on attacking that shit and why it's going to be painful when ukies take it back

The salt mines would be incredibly useful if the entrances weren't within HIMARS' range. Otherwise, it's only got good defensive value, and it's defending Soledar, which isn't either side's real priority.

And? Rest of depots Russia uses are still in HIMARS range. Its much easier to organize logistic to 1 depot than 1000s of smaller ones
Mine also has multiple entrances and exits across city and a tourist hotel which can be used as safe barracks or hospital at front line

From what I can tell, it was originally supposed to be a delaying action by the Ukies during the Kharkiv offensive. I think the Russian Bakhmut offensive and Ukrainian Kharkiv offensive happened at the same time.

The main UAF line is Slovyansk-Kramatorsk. Siversk-Bakhmut was supposed to be a delaying operation following the fall of Severaldonuts, but it's taken the Russians 6 months to even set the conditions for a proper assault on Bakhmut itself with the push into Soledar.

In PR terms it's great - 10k town prior to the war, salt mines, an actual victory unlike pisskey.
In tactical terms it should make Bakhmut harder to supply (but not impossible, certainly easier then supplying severaldonuts).
In strategic terms it means jack shit, it lost all importance once Russians stalled on the Bakhmut-Soledar "line".

The UAF rotated out their actual first-echelon unit from Soledar in December. 93rd Mechanised, the brigade that minced 4th GTD, had been holding the town. They got moved south into Bakhmut itself and since then it's been held by an airborne brigade.

it complicates logistics for backhmut and is more favorable position overall for ruskies but on itself town doesn't have that much significanse, i mean, frontline isn't going to collapse if ukies lose it today.
it's a kind of a propaganda victory for russia tho (entire town!) and yeah it's bad for ukies but vatniks are still pretty fucking far from capturing east of ukraine.
i think ukrainians are doing severaldonuts here, they fuck russians in bloody street fighting while slowly retreating from the town.

Why russians call Bakhmut by its soviet name, but refuse to do the same with Soledar (Better known as Karlo-Libknekhtovsk in 1965-1991)?

      Anonymous

Because Bakhmut was renamed during soviet times to honor some soviet gay only the russians give a shit about and they're salty about Ukraine's attempt to "de-communize" since they wanted to be able to steal everything themselves, and they think it's code for theft due to their own history.

Not at all important. The capture of Lyman essentially invalidated any real meaning Bakhmut or offensives in that direction meant. Svatove and Kreminna are important, Soledar isn't even 'important' by itself without capturing it's equivalent in the south and properly encircling Bakhmut, but then god damned Bakhmut isn't important.

Wagner cucks itself on this fucking thing.

They think the salt mines will save them. Ukraine probably is sentimental about them.

Soledar is the key to Bakhmut, Bakhmut is the key to the twin cities of Slovyansk and Kramatorsk which themselves are the key to the entire Donbass area. But their fall would mean much more as it would also give the Russians a shot at the Ukrainian heartland.

By all accounts they are a veritable fortress though

      Anonymous

Again, no. Soledar is "A" key. Even Bakhmut is just "A" key. Everything behind Soledar and Bakhmut is fortified. It's old news by now. You need North and South of Bakhmut taken and Bakhmut completely encircled before you even get a shot at Bakhmut.

Maybe they have delusions of being able to do it with the fresh mobilisation?

Bakhmut was important when the Russians controlled Kharkiv. But that was quite a few months ago, as it stands now it's just a very heavily fortified piece of terrain between Russia and the also heavily fortified Slovyansk-Kramatorsk line that Wagner has been tasked with taking. Girkin put it pretty well in his doompost after the Great Goodwill Gesture, Bakhmut exists in an operational shadow now but Wagner doesn't really seem to care

  17. 2 weeks ago
    Anonymous

Bakhmut is a small crossroads, strategically its importance is insignificant due to its location. What's made it important is because this is Wagner's battle and Prigozhin is trying to set himself up as the next big thing in russian politics by cozying up to Putin and thinking he'll get the nod for successor and if not he can threaten the use of Wagner
