Snowshoeing

How many of you guys (and gals) are into snowshoeing? What type of snowshoe do you use? What type of terrain do you go out in?
I have been show shoeing since I was a teenager. I use a Tubbs wooden framed eastern bear paw type snowshoe. I love the binding on the Tubbs. Best binding in the business if you ask me. I live in Upstate NY and all my snow shoeing is in the woods and fields of the Catskills and Adirondack Mountains and surrounding areas. Soon I want to try out a winter camping snow shoe outing using a Pulk, which for me will be either a plastic sled with lashings or a old wooden toboggan that I have. Let me know what you're into.

If you don't go outside then why do you post.

I came here to post this.

I have two pairs, and I use them once the snow is more than 1.5ft or so. They are a tool for hiking and nothing more. People who go out to intentionally snowshoe confuse me. But then again, people enjoy solitaire, so who am I to judge?

Just get a set of cross country skis, at least there is a potential for fun.

I snowshoe the foothills and ridges in my backyard in the dark and shoot stuff with tracers.
Although my Costco snowshoes (don't hate, they were great for years and took me up all the molehills in the Northeast) are pretty much clapped out.

My favorite part is that it is so quiet and you have the whole forest to yourself. especially at night. Following tracks in the snow is lots of fun too. I'm not going to hate on you costco snowshoes. Having any pair is better than none.

Unfortunately, there are sometimes night skiers. I enjoy stalking them though, they're always so loud and bright. I'll tie hemlock boughs to the bottom of the shoes so they're quiter. Wish I had a PVS-14 monocular, that'd be the fricking shit for my wintertime uhhh activities

A PVS-14 would really light up the night. I rarely ever run into anyone when snowshoeing. I suppose it would be skiers if I did. This year I'm going to use my snowshoes to go camping with a toboggan that I will pull behind me with all my gear. I don't have a hot tent yet. I was thinking of using a Polish Lavvu poncho set up. I need to get a small wood burner to make it more comfortable. Something like pic related would be what I want to do.

I've done it before, it sucks the whole time you are pulling it, but being able to haul in a camp chair and the tools to really process wood right to keep you warm is very nice. You will want to make sure you put pvc sleeves on the pull rope so it doesnt chop block you going downhill. Syntax77 has a good pulk sled video.

Yes, I have a book by the Conovers on winter camping who do winter guides in Maine and Quebec using snowshoes, skis ad pulks. They have all the details in their book. Snowshoes and skis are a good way to get back into the back country in winter. You never know when this could come in handy and not just for recreation but for escape, survival and hunting purposes

BTW, there are tons of snowshoes available on ebay for great prices if you were looking. I was thinking of finding a smaller lighter pair than the big wooden ones I have. I have never used alight synthetic pair before. I bet they are so much lighter. I'm kind of a traditionalist so i bought the wooden ones.

Because snowshoeing sucks tbqh. Most people buy the yop of the line at REI, try it once, realize they are averse to exertion, then sell them. But what else am I supposed to do with myself, it's better than floundering around in 5 feet of snowpack, or watching netflix or some shit

I just love getting out in the fresh snow fall. Snowshoes beat hiking in deep snow. If people buy them new and then sell them at a loss, it's their loss our gain. I like shopping good deals. Id rather go snowshoeing than stay inside.

Rent them, don't buy. They're worth buying if you're going to use them. If you're just going to go one time, go to a skip shop and rent a pair and wander around for the day.
