I remember one Ukrainian soldier at the Azovstal siege already have a prostethic at the start of the siege and was still fighting.

We also long have fighter pilots with no legs, British RAF's Douglas Bader, and Soviet's Alexey Maresyev.

We really need to change recruitment requirements based on what role they are applying for, there is no reason why midgets should be excluded from tank crews, plane crews, or naval, we should be actively recruiting midgets.

We should also train those with no legs to be pilot if they got the aptitude for it

      >It was thought that Bader's success as a fighter pilot was partly because of his having no legs; pilots pulling high g-forces in combat turns often blacked out as the flow of blood from the brain drained to the lower parts of the body, especially the legs. As Bader had no legs he could remain conscious longer, and thus had an advantage over opponents with legs.

How can a 1987 movie have so much better effects and makeup than modern day movies?

Practical effects don't trigger uncanny valley the same way than CGI, if only due to lighting. Obvious practical made with animal guts and foam prostethics will always look more gruesome than badly lit 8k CGI.

          Anonymous

I think lighting is one of the key things that give away CGI and makes it look fake. Its that, as well as perceived "frame rate/movement" relative to the CG and the real footage that gives it away.

I always thought starship troopers's arachnids looked real enough and I do think they still hold up as one of the best integrations of CGI in film.

the people back then actually gave a shit. Most cg effects are done by sweatshop worker in india who don't even know what movie they're working on.

I could never put my finger on it but this. Esp those MCU movies where half the movie is them fighting an endless CGI horde. Id wager this would go a long way to explain the moronic scripts, plots and video games these days as well.

              >not posting the left side of that scene where they have to CGI edit out a weapon in the middle of a shot because otherwise Rey would get gutted

the worst part of this shit is they never have any scenes where they even ATTEMPT to make a costume for a few actors to ground the visuals into reality

the best CGI is usually intermixed with lots of practical effects but nobody bothers with that, they just go full CGI and no part of your brain is able to suspend disbelief on what you're looking at because it's literally all fake... my best example of this is comparing the two "The Thing" movies, one made a while ago now, using almost entirely practical effects, still stand up, is still scary and is still really cool to look at. The new one? scrapped its practical effects for almost every scene having CGI, it suffers for it. The creatures don't stick with me.. like the "head spider" in the OG is probably the creepiest fricking thing and the visual is still stuck in my head.. same with the dogs when they first find The Thing trying to assimilate them... it's awful in a good way lol.

              /blog post

The new had its entire practical effects completed and shot, only to have the studios overlay them with CGI in post. Though in reality a lot of films intermix CGI and practical effects because practical effect cost, complexity, and fragility rapidly eat budget and shooting time the more complicated you try to make them while CGI costs scale quickly with amount of rendering needed. For example, Bucky's metal arm in the Marvel films is actually a mix of practical effects, rigid, metallic sleeves over Sebastian Stan's forearm and bicep with a color matched arm length glove underneath, and CGI overlay on the hand, elbow, and connection to the shoulder. You could do it either pure practical or pure CGI, but pure practical would add a lot of bulk and restrict movement while pure CGI would be obvious and require additional render time and cost.

On that note, I'd like to say The Thing is probably some of the finest dog acting in all of cinema.
The way the thing-dog acts so alien in the scenes where it's planning something are amazing. It just quietly scans it's surroundings and watches people through windows, compared to when it's first rescued and playing up the whole cuddly dog thing, trying to go in for licks (which is perfect for the Thing now that I think about it)
The same dog (a wolf hybrid) went on to be in White Fang, too.

And back on subject, it's incredibly agonizing to see a film use CG animals in place of live ones these days. I remember seeing the recent Death on the Nile adaptation and being immediately taken out of it by CGI snakes that weren't even doing something action-intensive like attacking someone, just swimming through the water as scenery.

it's all money bros, if you did the math I'm sure it's so much cheaper to get CGI animals drawn in for a few frames here and there then it is to bring in real ones, pay for their handlers and insurance for all that bullshit.

I bet it's actually more liability then straight cost, nobody wants to deal with animals being injured or even killed, especially with the smaller ones like snakes.. way easier to step on snek and kill it, or hell even insects depending on what you wanted in the scene.

Foreign, non-English speaking, markets make up an increasing percentage of the global movie market, so they have to make movies that the audience can follow without necessarily understanding any of the language. It's dumbed down shit that ESLs can follow along with.

I tried to watch the girl Ghostbusters (2016) and only made it around 20 minutes in, fricking awful acting, script, and special effects compared to the first.

Movies used to be a labour of love and the money was what was needed to make it. Now movies are made with the aim to get the maximum of money with putting in the least, and the actors want the most fame with the least work. Al Pacino said for The Godfather they rehearsed and filmed over a year, but that these days there is almost no rehearsal, people arrive on site and shoot and leave without getting to know their co-stars, so no chemistry.

they let all the girls in that one ad-lib their lines, that's why it's so shitty and just isn't funny, they're all 'trying' to be funny instead of a good script being written for them to play off eachother

individually I think all of them are actually pretty funny, even Leslie Jones who is usually just doing "I'm da big black guurrl" is okay. You compare that to the OG where each of them were perfect for their specific roles, and the ad-libbed lines were at a minimum, it had structure to its comedy.

I find it impossible to watch because the characters are so unlikable, except for maybe the autistic girl. In the original the guys were actually FRIENDS. The lead girl is a loser, not an underdog, she sabotage herself, and her 'friend' is a b***h who wants to and did ruin her career, it just reminded me of highschool in the worse way, b***hes I want to get away from and losers I try to help but give up after they sink themselves repeatedly, and then resent you for not being to help even though they failed to listen to your advice like every Kitchen Nightmare restaurant that went BACK to losing money after changing Ramsay's do-over.

it's kinda interesting how movie cgi seems to have stalled where it was around lord of the rings or the like, not having watched any big budget action movies in a while i assumed the effects would've moved on but looking at trailers for recent movies it's still got the exact same artificial feel

          Anonymous

Trailers are often released before post production work is finished and often contain placeholder or temporary CGI. Also movie CGI has advanced, often significantly, the problem is that better CGI requires more processing power and longer render times. The current market has high demand for CGI combined with massive expense for additional processing power, creating a essentially a shortage of availability for CGI studios. The enemy of perfect is good enough, and in this case going beyond good enough starts seeing an exponential rise is costs.

I've always wondered how long can a disembodied head actually survive if it's being kept artificially alive in a cyborg body.

Obviously it's not indefinitely, as while physical aging of the of the rest of body isn't a problem, your brain still ages and will eventually cease to function.

          Anonymous

if we actively worked on it I'm sure you could keep someones head alive for quiet a while, I don't know how well a human mind would cope with being literally just a head but people are paralyzed and get along in life (with help) so I guess it's not impossible

I think the Futurama "head in a jar" isn't even that far off from what we could theoretically do. I think the hardest part would be keeping someones head/brain alive during the transition from being on a body to being in a... jar?

Paraplegics and quadriplegics actually tend to have dramatically shortened lifespans. I think it's in part because the brain can't function properly without stimuli and the added stress from the loss of feeling of touch helps induce organ failure prematurely.

it's crazy how that works.. you'd think that your brain would function better/easier without having to control your whole body, but the absence of it actually means a large portion of your brain is essentially never doing anything and just like, neurologically atrophying?

              frickin wild

The various plegics have issues because their brains are missing fundamental aspects of their feedback loops that regulate the body and prevent it from coming to harm/responding to harm. Imagine a car with no lights, mirrors, instrument panels, or gauges. You can still drive it, but you're at a much higher risk of breakdown or accident.

no joke there's a term like "brain drain" for when a country loses a large portion of its more intelligent/wealthy population for one reason or another, war, natural disasters, famine, etc etc. This creates a cascade where dumb people who relied on the smart people are now stuck on their own... pretty sure this is what happened to the entire country, all the smart people are gone.

Didn't Soviet scientists manage to keep dog heads alive and conscious back in the 40s? I'm not sure for how long they lasted though, the biggest problem is just trying to keep the brain oxygenated right?

The robot body was fake, trying to keep decapitated dogs heads alive was real, iirc the experiments were to test new machines meant to circulate blood artificially outside of the body and thus keep severely wounded individuals alive longer to make treating them easier.

I've actually grown off the idea of weaponized prosthetics as a waste of resources. If you needed to augment someone's body then augmenting and improving what's already there seems a far better route than chopping off limbs to replace them with metal bits unless they lost them and make use of things like muscle suits/exo skeletons/etc to make up the rest.

Now my autism has been set off a bit trying to make sense of skin plug/ports and shit. On Space Marines it makes sense I suppose because they have the Black Carapace but Soroitas apparently have something like that to for their own power armor.

Black Carapace is lost tech bioengineering grown out of the SM's body to provide nervous system functions linked to the powered armor. Sororitas, and other powered armor wearers, use cybernetics to basically hardline check engine lights to their brains.

You're implying that we have a shortage of crippled veterans with missing bits from their line of duty.

        Anonymous

Never implied such a thing, there are plenty of industrial accidents that go on that doesn't require active conflict. I'm reminded of a friend of mine who was prior navy and lost his leg thanks to a forklift. When I say weapon prosthetics I'm talking about limbs that function as weapons that makes no sense. That would be like giving someone claw hands and expecting them to go on living their life.

        >there seems a far better route than chopping off limbs

        lol wut?

In addition to veterans who lost limbs to war we also have a lot of people who lost it to accidents or infections or they were born that way, and a lot of them are healthy enough to be scary in zombie movies, see Dawn of the Dead (2004), guy missing one arm isn't off balance and can still run really fast, guy with no legs can monkey bar really fast on pipes above.

Nick Santonastasso was born with one arm, it looks like he's missing the bottom half of his torso but he can crawl really fast so he got internet famous doing zombie pranks in Walmart, than Norman Reedus from Walking Dead:

I don't know if the people born without limbs can use artificial limbs that may require nerve endings they never have, but we have no shortage of people who are missing limbs but are OTHERWISE PrepHole enough for the military.

I'm referring to regular people who have perfectly (or near enough) functioning limbs who shouldn't chop them off just to replace them with metal bits. Dudes like Nick, on the other hand, could due with a full body prosthetic but I doubt that would suddenly turn him into a soldier of fortune

My point really is that turning a human into a meat tank is wasteful. A dude who's lost limbs due to combat and is able to get a high tech peg-leg or hook hand is not going to turn him into the 6 million dollar man all of a sudden but is never a bad thing if it allows him to not only get back into the fight but re-intregrate back into society instead of being a torso on a RV having to have people feed him and clean out his colostomy bag.

The true question is: how did they get his lungs into that plastic container without them collapsing or being damaged? You think if they are going to remove his thorax completely they would just give him artificial lungs, which would eliminate the potential for a lung infection or the failure of his biological lungs.
