Horses need a lot more than a few sugar cubes and a brush to be viable in the field.

motorcycle/dirt bike would be a more modern, lower maintenance modern "cavalry"

Engines need fuel made from refined oil, which requires long supply chains that will collapse when SHTF.
Horses just need food and care. A lot of food and a lot of hours of hoof tending, but still only food and care.

Fuel, oil, and spare parts will be very hard to come by the longer SHTF lasts.

Horses are a lot of work but they would be a good option for travelling longer trails and back country roads if you dont want the noise of a dirt bike. with that said, electric dirt bikes exist and they have 90 mile ranges

Back in the days of horse travel, infrastructure was built around them rather than automobiles. It would take a lot of manpower and resources to rebuild society for a dependency for horseback and carriages.

      >easy
Mules would be better options because they're stronger& hardier than horses, don't suffer muscular or hoof injury as easily& don't colic as often. That said, it's still a huge pain in the ass & a giant expense just to keep them alive& healthy
Like the old joke goes: What's the fastest way to become a millionaire?
Start off as a billionaire& then buy some horses

      >mules
Them and donkeys are superior work animals.I’ve seen Amish use horses to pull heavy duty equipment meant for tractors a while back but the ones near me only use horses for travel as they prefer tractors and skidsteers.

In my experience anyone who has had to use horses professionally and not just for fun or as a status symbol at least sorta hates them.

The shit has been hitting the fan pretty much constantly somewhere on the planet for the last 30 years. You can still get gasoline, batteries, shit even cell service in even the most backward war-torn shitholes on the planet
Societal collapse does not look like you think it does.

      Climate Collapse =/= SHTF
Climate collapse is an ongoing event but the world is seemingly content with the current circumstances. Most places have yet to encounter any sort of long term SHTF scenario where all the chains break and crumble.
      > You can still get gasoline, batteries, shit even cell service in even the most backward war-torn shitholes on the planet
Developing nations are in fact, developing nations. Believe it or not, most of sub-Saharan Africa aren’t spear chuckers anymore. The global supply chain is GLOBAL, however many nations are dependent on foreign manufacturing, foods, medicine, raw materials, and other resources to stay afloat. It’s not like the gulf Arab states, for example, built their skyscrapers and gleaming cities with sand or grow their own foods in the desert. When the world becomes unable to support globalization, those nations that are incapable of supporting their populations with the resources they have available will truly suffer SHTF.

Better go on the Botach website and buy your horse a bulletproof blanket
When shit hits the fan and you're moseying through downtown looking for cans of beans
you don't want Jamal to pop out with his YeetCannon 9mm and kill your horse before you can blast him with your .45-70 lever

Horses are impractical and expensive in the current year. I have a mountain bike tho, and I’d argue that’s what you really want for some kind of “modern cavalry”

I fricking hate these threads. Horses are terrible animals and would be worse than useless in SHTF.

I've been thrown off a horse and I'd still prefer one in a SHTF situation.

        >You can still get gasoline, batteries, shit even cell service
You can get that stuff because a few nations have disproportionately massive navies that protect trade routes. What are you going to do when SHTF in one of the countries that allows all the others to have S not HTF?

I'd just use my bicycle. In general I think they're underrated for SHTF planning. I wish I had the knowledge and means to care for a horse.

    Yeh.
Though, many of the other commenters are correct; they are alot of work, money, and do have some pretty bad limitations.
If you happen to have an unlimited supply of them i suppose you could get away with neglecting and abusing them. But if you only have a few you need to keep them in good shape if you expect them to not go lame or die on you.

Do you keep horses at your ranch? Because that's big talk for somebody who doesn't have a horse.
