jeeps and 2.5 ton trucks got shot at a lot
not least because the enemy might be a lot further than you thought they might be
and jeeps were held all the way down to the company level, even if you never planned for them to get shot at, it was a bit of a inevitability regardless
they didnt have a MG mount for show, the HQ jeep even came wit ha .50cal on it just in cas
            e
the humvee was just at a point where you could add armor to a 4x4 without bogging it down
the jeep could only hold 1/4 ton and still go offroad, the humvee could hold nearly a ton
since 4 dudes and a driver arent anywhere close to a ton even with gear, you can quite a bit of armor to it without affecting performance
if the troops in WW2 could armor a jeep they would have, but its unsafe design and small 50hp engine just limited that

It's an issue of logistics Black person. Fuel is hard to transport and an easy artillery target, if you make every vehicle a 30 ton armored monstrosity you're going to need a lot of fuel.

Bruh, a ton people ukie soldiers literally fundraise to buy cheap used pickup trucks and such, because lack of armor is deemed an okay trade off for something which is fast, quite and maneuverable

Its not even an APC. It's literally just a utility vehicle. It was just meant to replace jeeps. Of course, it was then used for everything, including roles it was never originally intended to fill.

Those were the "reserves" version of the Macks that we were supposed to get 10 years ago. I say it in quotations because of Canadian military procurement shenanigans the reg force guys had to use them as primary assets.

The new macks are pretty okay for about 40 minutes before the dash lights up like a Christmas tree. The Oshkosh guys in the competition for the bid got REAALLLLY mad when they told us "just break it bro. It's field testing. Trust me you can't break it"

So my buddy drove it off an 8 foot cliff and blew out the rear axle. The Macks didn't break when we did that but the mack defence guys got mad too

Why did the JLTV win out over the BRVO?

        >The Pentagon Operational Test & Evaluation Office released a report of how each JLTV prototype performed in a Limited User Test (LUT) in February 2016, finding that the BRV-O would “require a significant redesign” to meet threshold force protection requirements, and it had reliability problems demonstrating 526 "Mean Miles Between Operational Mission Failure," compared to 2,968 miles for the Humvee and 7,051 for the winning L-ATV.

Basically, it wasn't as well protected or reliable as the JLTV or even the Humvee.

Its just a utility truck, everyone has them. Bongs use land rovers in the role, Russians use UAZs, German use mercedes benz things, French use Peugeot buggies while gradually replacing them with commercial SUVs. Weird that the Humvee gets so much scrutiny when of all the utility vehicles used around the world, its the most capable and flexible.

Tards can't understand that vehicles have roles other than combat. Them being turned into armored cars was an expedient measure due to the US Army being poorly equipped to fight an insurgency. Strip that shit off of it and use them as intended and they are fine.

the most up armoured Humvee ?

Those have an aluminum armor plate over a steel plate. Story time.
      >be me, zogbot, in one of my two iraq tours don't remember which one
      >walking on the fob and pass a humvee with two guys standing next to one of the door talking about some damage on the door completely dumbfounded
      >look and see that the outter aluminum armor plate on the door has a massive spiral on it
      >it looks like a dugout canoe in the metal in a spiral shape
      >like a large round had come in and blasted through the aluminum while scraping the hard steel plate underneath and just went around and around in the aluminum
      >couldn't tell if the round was still in the aluminum or if it had exited
      >kept walking, I don't know you
It was bretty cool. I wonder if there is some logic to that armor armor arrangement that is designed to keep a penetrator in the softer metal deflecting off the harder plate underneath.

This is very interesting to read, thanks for posting it.
Ukraine is currently standing up a factory to produce "Inguar 3," which is like a Roshel Senator crossed with a legitimate MRAP truck.
And early in the ~45min video, the designer/spokesman mentioned:
"We put aluminum plates before steel, due to the *liquid property of aluminum in receiving shocks.*"
So your guess seems to be true!

The story I heard was the hum wasn't designed as a combat vehicle. It was a logistical/truck sort of thing that happened to be lying around in great numbers when a conflict broke out, so it got pressed into service despite bot being up to the task

It was because of Iraq, specifically. Turns out 'rear area' vehicles have problems in conflicts where there is no rear area.
