Or you can just buy some instead of fricking up M14 magazines and risking them not working with anything.
https://stores.csspecs.com/zastava-m77-308/
They're a bit pricey, but quality M14 mags don't grow on trees either. The cheap Korean ones have their feed lips blow out after being left loaded and then you get doublefeeds everywhere.
I've owned both. Several M14geries and a Zastava M77PS.
The Zastava did not impress me at all. Expensive special snowflake magazines (although CSSpecs makes them and those are good), extraction and case head failures with steel cased 308 which the M14s can eat just fine, mediocre accuracy, optics mount only works with specifically Yugo pattern adapters, furniture sucked dick and 45 degree slant cut on the back of the receiver meant it was difficult to find any kind of upgrade stock that actually fit without leaving a gap. Most fatal issue was excessive peening on the bolt, which was mushrooming quite a lot at only a couple of hundred rounds. I hope they have improved the metallurgy substantially from the rifle I got because I was genuinely getting worried about it beating itself up to the point where it wouldn't actually go into battery or worse yet slip out when locked and explode.
Springfield M1As are their own kettle of fish, but they have been around for a long time and they at least generally speaking work. I recommend preemptively upgrading the extractor and ejector to forged parts (Bula Defense makes them). The SOCOM has a proprietary gas system that can be a little finicky, although the examples I've seen and shot seemed ok. Magazines are common, mounting optics in a stable and unobtrusive way can be annoying unless you're ok with long eye relief, they usually eat steel cased ammunition without issues, and the rifle can last pretty much forever. Contrary to popular belief, the cast receiver does not stretch or crack over time. That is fuddlore. There are match shooters who have burned through several barrels and their receivers are still good to go. >Bbbut M14 worst rifle evar.
No it's not. >Bbbbbut Springfield makes the worst M14 evar.
There's actually substantially worse out there, like Federal Ordnance. SAI isn't the best but it's generally ok. >SAI are anti 2A traitors.
Sort of yes and no. Buy used, they get nothing that way
As an euro gun owner that missed the boat on complete UC surplus yougo m76 w zrak for €1k I had the displeasure of buying a naked m77 b1 for 900, naively thinking 308 would be a better choice in the long run.
The m77 was a b***h to cycle steel cased tula, marginally better with brass ppu (serb ammo and setb gun yet it wasn't flawless ffs) almost reliable with Lithuanian m80 ggg and reliable with norma...
It was more prone to case head sep and brass mangling than my french arsenal converted 7,62 nato mas49/56 ( notoriously known for hi pressure ejection)
Accuracy wise? My best groups were sub 3 moa with norma with gun on a vice ffs... This is unacceptable and probably comes from barrel whip.
The optic rail was mounted to rearward on the m77 I had the end of my belomo posp at the middle of the already tiny stock... I had to get a dovetail to pica mount and a prism x4 in order to shoulder the thing like an human being.
The only good point was it looked mean... They are the hummer h2 of guns they look mean but they are all bark no bite compared to humvee
Sold it after 1k round to a slavaboo homosexual that never did a decent group with it despite only feeding it mother fricking sako latch loads...
The only reason why TFB tv shilled this gun is because zastava serbs are known to be extremely efficient wiener gobblers.
But for mag dumping at 50yds with overpriced ammo and Instagram attention fishing? They are gr8

So the answer, as always, is get a DPMS AR-308 from a decent manufacturer if you want a good shooting rifle.
If you want the best overall battle rifle per dollar and pound yes. Nothing comes close to a modern AR-10.
M14geries are still enjoyable though, and they are absolutely comfy to shoot. They last long enough to be heirloom guns you can pass down for generations, accuracy is pretty decent by cold war battle rifle standards and they can eat pretty much whatever 308/7.62mm you feed them with no gas adjustment.
G3 clones are pretty effective too. They don't last forever, but they are dirt cheap and absolutely deliver the goods. Shame that wide handguards are tough to get right now (I think RobertRTG might have some AC Unity in stock) since it's pretty much a mandatory upgrade unless you enjoy roasting your hand.
Per DOLLAR and pound.
SCAR is a great rifle, but $3500-4000+ is a frickload of cheddar. You can build an AR-10 that will shoot just as good or better for 1/3 of that price and the only feature you will really be missing (other than making everyone at the range jealous) is the folding stock.
Would you say that an AR10 you can get for the price of an M1A or M77 is that much better? At that price you're looking at an Aero, Springfield Saint, or Sig Tread.
That's genuinely surprising. I know that they aren't the greatest machines in the world, but both the M14 and M77 design are actual military rifles. And a bottom of the barrel AR10 screwed together by the literal monkeys working in PSA's assembly and QC departments is still better?
I guess I just didn't realize the gap in the design between the AR10 and other classic battle rifles was that enormous.

The M77 we get isn't a military spec rifle. As I and another anon indicated above it's pretty much junk. M1A isn't military spec either since their parts quality and QC aren't quite up to scratch either, although it's still a much better rifle than the M77.
Personally I have owned several battle rifles and AR-10s are just not quite my thing. I have an LRB M14SA because I like it more rather than it being objectively better. The only real criticism I have of AR-10s is they tend to be a bit picky with ammo, so if I had to buy one I'd steer towards one equipped with an adjustable gas system.

AR-10/308 never got a military spec either, actually. It's split between the original Colt AR-10 spec and the newer DPMS LR-308 design, which seems to have become the AR family 308 rifle standard.
The thing about the AR family is that its design allows for parts to be easily standardized. This means that you can, generally speaking, slap together parts from a dozen different manufacturers and have a working rifle with very little, if any gunsmithing required. So it's very easy to make a good shooting rifle.
Compared that to the Kalashnikov design, which requires a hell of a lot more custom fitting and troubleshooting. But because it was expected that each rifle is its own contained unit and that there was always a replacement rifle they didn't consider parts interchangeability a problem once it left the factory. Unfortunately this also means that there is no one Kalash standard with each country and even sometimes each factory doing its own thing.
So it's unfortunately very easy to make a bad Kalashnikov rifle, especially when you know it's going to be sold to civilians who aren't going to be doing much more than playing with it on the range. They can be excellent guns but QC has to put down their crack pipes and focus for that to happen.

Can't speak for the others, but I can confirm Aero M5 is a solid midrange choice. I haven't had any troubles that haven't been caused by the ammo or my moronation and certainly none of the issues that euroanon has had.

Yeah, I have one and it's great but only because I got it used for an absolutely moronic price. >Local boomer dies of coof. >Family flogs his shit on consignment at LGS. >Price below market to sell fast because greedy crotch goblins who hate guns and just want money. >Two brand new in factory grease early production LRBs for $2200 each. >Buy one (wish I could go back in time and buy both) >Sell the M1A I currently had for $2000 to a Calguns boomer who was panic buying.
Basically upgraded my 1990s production M1A (USGI barrel but still screwed together kinda shitty) to a pristine perfect LRB with all TRW parts for $200. I'm getting buried with the thing when I die.
Would I buy one for $3500 and a 6+ month long wait? Frick no. The M1A that I bought for $1300 was good enough that I'd still be shooting it today if I hadn't gotten that deal.
Actually useful info based on firsthand experience? I'm shocked, I tell you!
Actually let me add a caveat here. I bought my M1A when I lived in California, so I had to buy CA compliant. I don’t regret buying it but if I didn’t live in CA I would have bought a FAL and I would recommend you do to over the M1A and especially over that shitty Zestava. Though I would also recommend going fulll length on your battle rifle, especially if you go the FAL route. SOCOM gets bonus cool points for being super unique and I think they will be worth a lot one day if they’re ever discontinued.
The only problem with the FAL comes down to simply the cost of buying one that’s function. personally I always advise people to steer clear of DSA, Century, and Imbel. Which are really the only “affordable options”. >inb4 worthless anecdotal “well my *insert above mentioned FAL* works fine!”
I have no doubt that it very well may. The problem however comes down to QC. You could get an okay rifle or you could get a piece of shit. Good FALs aren’t cheap to come by.
Ngl i’m kind of sick about hearing of “QC” issues. It seems literally every gun that isn’t H&K or high end AR has a bad rep for QC issues now because 1 in 1,000 guy posted about it online. Unless it’s turkshit or worse, like Pakistani Ordnance, I tend to shut it out. Just buy it from someone like Atlantic who will let you swap it out anyways. The QC issue shit is being blown way out of proportion for most manufacturers. Zastavas look so much better but I feel like they age poorly.
Maybe it’s just that leftist gays and Black folk tend to buy AK’s here.
I don’t want to say something stupid like M1a’s are made better, because I can’t actually imagine that ever being the case, but I’m tempted to.
Your average leftist hates guns, yet there's always a few on the fringe that will get into the hobby and then vote for politicians that openly call for their guns to be taken away. Why are Dem/Progressive gun owners so moronic?
>oh boy guns are so cool, I like them a lot and everyone that wants to should be well acquainted with firearms and shoot often and.... >vote for people who seek to actively smother American gun culture
Not a single issue voter and I hate most federally elected Republicans as well, but you're moronic if you think there's a place for American gun culture in the current Democrat platform.

I pray that I find someone willing to trade a FAL for any of the AKMs I reassembled from parts kits, I can't help but fawn over the right arm of the free world as the anti-commie equivalent to an AKM.

M77 and put an LPVO on it. Socom m1a if you have a hard on for history, style but beware, it only comfortably sits a small micro red dot. Any type of scope or big optic goes on the grip end, which is very uncomfortable, bad and generally a pain since you have that weight seesaw pulling you down.

Your average leftist hates guns, yet there's always a few on the fringe that will get into the hobby and then vote for politicians that openly call for their guns to be taken away. Why are Dem/Progressive gun owners so moronic?
>how come dem gun owners don't exclusively vote for people who are pro-gun like me?
being a single-issue voter just means its that much easier for shit politicians to get your vote.
>oh boy guns are so cool, I like them a lot and everyone that wants to should be well acquainted with firearms and shoot often and....
>vote for people who seek to actively smother American gun culture
Not a single issue voter and I hate most federally elected Republicans as well, but you're moronic if you think there's a place for American gun culture in the current Democrat platform.
This. I wanted to reply to that commie frick, but you took the words out of my mouth.

Customize it, there's a sweet frickton of aftermarket parts to personalize your yugo carbine.
I pray that I find someone willing to trade a FAL for any of the AKMs I reassembled from parts kits, I can't help but fawn over the right arm of the free world as the anti-commie equivalent to an AKM.
Buy an LRB with a forged receiver if you want to go that route.
https://www.lrbarms.com/m14-receivers--actions.html
For the price of an LRB you get into SCAR and DDM5 territory.
>Buy one (wish I could go back in time and buy both)
>Sell the M1A I currently had for $2000 to a Calguns boomer who was panic buying.
Basically upgraded my 1990s production M1A (USGI barrel but still screwed together kinda shitty) to a pristine perfect LRB with all TRW parts for $200. I'm getting buried with the thing when I die.
Would I buy one for $3500 and a 6+ month long wait? Frick no. The M1A that I bought for $1300 was good enough that I'd still be shooting it today if I hadn't gotten that deal.
>i want a 308 gun
>but i don't want it to be accurate or ergonomic
homosexual here, germans are gayer than I am.
If you get an M14 without a walnut stock the ghost of William Westmoreland will come up from hell and drag you back down with him.
scar
M77 and put an LPVO on it. Socom m1a if you have a hard on for history, style but beware, it only comfortably sits a small micro red dot. Any type of scope or big optic goes on the grip end, which is very uncomfortable, bad and generally a pain since you have that weight seesaw pulling you down.
>posts a moronic counter opinion to all the information that was well presented by Wumboligist

>Should I buy an M77 or an M1a SOCOM?

Irish-American here, get AUG and G3.

>been 7 minutes
>site wants me to wait even longer before deleting post
Here's the pic I meant to attach. I'm very sure you'll appreciate these on your M77 if you've the extra dough to scrape for it, OP.
