Shilka=total garbage

How is the Shilka getting out performed by the Flakpanzer Gepard when the Yooks only have 30 Flakpanzers while having a prewar inventory of several hundred Shilkas? Is the Shilka just total shit or was it just a nightmare to maintain readiness compared to the German counterpart?

The total lack of footage of Shilkas seen in operation from either side and the total shit performance the Shilka had in Gulf I, Yugoslavia, Gulf II, and Lybia

I hate to say it, but there's not a total lack of footage of the shilka.
Ukes used them against infantry a bunch of times, and have blown up RF ones.

Have a look at the computation of a shilka. It's horrible.

A shilka is more useful in it's separate parts than put together.

To be fair, shilka also cheaper than gepard so it's understandable that they perform worse.

Probably the lack of a search radar. Also, it's a nightmare to operate, user interface so unintuitive that only something as inhuman as a r*ssian could have dreamt it up

Some autist made a simulator of it, gives a decent picture how it is to operate one.

I don't know ow shit about SPAAGs but is it impossible to rip out the orginal computer systems and radars and replace it with a superior western designed radar and controls? From what I understand the user interface is also trash on Russian systems compared to shit you see in the West and East Asia.

I’m sure it’s possible, and I’m sure someone has thought of it, but figuring out how to mate the technology would take a while and it would also be expensive enough to not make it worth it over simply buying newer NATO SPAAGS.

They probably had to adhere to a bunch of inane and complicated standards and regulations for designing weapon control systems written by people who had no idea how these things work.

Poland did modernize theirs with E/O trackers and manpads

See, this is what I would have expected, by now:

This warsaw pact stuff, that Ukraine had, or captured, or got given. Czech and Polish companies have been given it to repair right?

But shouldn't it have been determined what the best version of that equipment was, with the most upgrades, and everything sent for repairs came back as the best version?

Ukraines BDRMs, were they finished being repaired? How did they come back? As picrel? Somehow I doubt it. Yet they absolutely should have done. There shouldn't be a piece of equipment either donated, captured or pre-existing Ukrainian stock that doesn't have an upgrade package generated for it waiting for when it must be refurbished.

There are a couple of problems with modernizing Slavshit:
            1) You can upgrade something only so much and there's always the problem of age - most of Soviet vehicles are rusted through so it might not be worth salvaging them.
            2) Russia holds a chokehold on spare parts, that is if they even can make them.
            3) Why the frick would you? You can get previous generation NATO stuff for cheap and it will be an immense upgrade over whatever you had. Why would you upgrade Shilkas or BRDMs if you can just get Gepards, M1117s, VABs or fricking MRAPs.

Well the idea is you upgrade 20 shilkas with new radar and electronics for the price of 1 state of the art western equivalent, with a little smarts you save tons of steel and manufacturing resources. The problem is Russia suffered from a serious brain drain over of the past few decades, star students study in reputable Russian universities then, leave, for better and brighter things in sunnier climes. There are few capable of hooking these up, only corrupt vatniks who core out the electronics to sell the copper for krokodil and tell their officer they completely it flawlessly who in turn tell their superiors everything's fine and dandy. The kind of person who mentions problems or accepts constructive criticism is considered weak, so they deny they ever exist and deny it to the ends of the earth even when it is proven in front of their face, they won't say anything. Honest reasonable people basically don't exist. The only time a vatnik ever does any good work is half-assed effort for his own sake or a half-assed effort with someone bigger and stronger breathing down their neck browbeating them into doing the work.

It's not impossible, it's just the money is better spent elsewhere, the majority of the time. SPAAGs were not considered relevant until this war, and shilkas were kept around for their urban combat possibilities. If Shilkas were *all* Ukraine had, you can bet anything they would have hacked the shit out of them, given them radar, etc. They probably wish they had time to now.

I'm starting to get the picture from Ukraine that a year in they are much less organised at regrouping their assets than would be ideal. A lot of the captured shit they have hasn;t made it into the field because they don't have a proper register of parts for the captured equipment that is accessible and that can have requests submitted, with the result being battalions hoarding broken shit because "It might come in use to us".

        It's being done, entirely domestically.
But I have to say, it did have a radar. A bad one, but still

I do wonder just why the soviets were so terrible at ergonomic and userfriendly design. Like all their stuff looks pretty good on paper and then you have a look inside and it's an unintuitve mess that nobody can operate efficiently

I think that it has good enough fire power, but lacks of proper target acquisition system, so it's useless against small air targets like drones and tactical missiles. this is why most of shilka footage is against ground targets and not air.

It's because the Gepard was modernized in the 90's to early 2000's. It has much more modern radar and ballistics computers, and therefore can much easier spot, track and engage targets

Shilka uses vacuum tubes in it's FCS ffs.

    >a prewar inventory of several hundred Shilkas
Most of them were mothballed soviet style, effectively abandoned. Then many barrels were used as spares for ZU. Now they are being restored and modernised (new optical channel, missiles and AESA radar), but it started only like 3 months ago. And even in such a short time they are already in service, I heard them several times already, and saw a successful interception
