I like how they paired our Shilka with the Frankenstein mblt+naval AA. Think about it: the past and the future riding along.

Elements from the past and the future. Combine them, and get something not quite as good as either.

Is this a new standard component of the russian TOE, like a formally adopted vehicle? How many vintage ship turrets can a nation even have laying around in serviceable condition in the first place

I like the Shilka but it's no new to the Ukraine conflict. My picrel is from March last year and here is a video of Ukraine using one in June last year.

      IS THAT THING DENTED?

        Anonymous

Much of it is not actually armor or structural, just a thin metal shroud. Pretty common on Russian vehicles, actually. I think it may have to do with concealing protection factors and such

        Anonymous

The entire vehicle is paper thin, it needed to keep with tanks on the offense while being powered by an anemic V6, packing 4 autocannons with a shitload of ammo on gyrostabilized turret and with the added anchor of stone age electromechanical FCU and related systems.

We've had videos of both sides (but mostly Ukkies) operating them (including in an anti-infantry role) as far bas as May 2022.
They've been in the war since the start.

I hope Russia bothered to modernize the electronic components and radar. These things don’t have a lot of armor and those 25mm MT-LBs probably aren’t worth the effort to even bring into existence.
Aside from being place on top of the MoD, where are the Pantsirs?

These appear to be the Afghan variant from the 80's which had the radar removed.

Let´s be honest even if it was modernized all the systems at best would be 90´s dark age technology that would require mobilization of the OG 50 year old crew (if they are still alive) to properly function. They are sending them to do the shell hose job that the BMPTs were supposed to provide but can´t anymore because the couple they actually built are already kaput.
The funniest thing of all this is the shilka being put again in this role to replace the bmpt witch originally was designed with the intent of replacing and improving on the success of the shilka used as infantry support.

What do they intend to use them for? Infantry support? They don't really have the armor protection for that, but I guess since they're basically useless in their intended role that's the best you can do with them. Still, won't the crews realize they're basically in suicide machines?

They probably though "ooga booga drone go byebye" without wondering if the Rube Goldberg machine of a fire control system could handle the task even assuming they received regular maintenance. In reality they'll probably get used to spray and pray ukie lines from several oblasts away to avoid return fire. Here's hoping we get kino of them trying to be used as ghetto terminators in the assault and getting BTFO.

I wouldn't try that without proximity fused shells, which might be a bit of a tight squeeze in a 23mm package

I wonder if the radars and ancient analogue ballistic computers work anymore, I doubt they have been maintained since they were replaced with Tunguskas, Tors etc. decades ago

The Shilka is one of my favorite soviet AA systems. Its not great at the job anymore, but it can kill drones, it can kill buildings, it turns wagner into meat sauce.

SPAAGS were so hilariously overpowered in Operation Flashpoint. A single autocannon round had the same splash damage as a 120mm shell.

But if you read walkthroughs on how to cheese OF campaigns the writer recommends finding the nearest Shilka and commandeer it lmao

If you want true suffering, you need to play the abandoned armies mod.

I looked it up and went "WTF UKRAINE????" but turns out the flag is angled. It's always interesting when dedicated modders go balls out and push the game scripting to its limits.

For some reason the mod maker has the opposing sides use the Bosnian and Albanian flags despite the story taking place in the OFP universe. I do recommend trial and error in the beginning where everything is foggy, you will eventually reach the mountain cabin that will become your base of operations. Also be warned that your teammates will never come back and that enemies bases are absolutely flowing with armor and foot soldiers so it’s best to leave them as later targets unless you like fighting platoons of Abrams.

Shilka was actually trivial to engage in Operation Flashpoint (love the game). A single RPG hit which you can pull off from very far away (in the game).

T80 required three hits. Not easy.
