Sorry Serb anon. I would have liked things to be different but they're not. History is a b***h.
Serbia is too close to China and Russia.
If this deal was to happen one day, things would have had to calm down considerably in the region. This is not the case for now.

Speaking of Croatian Rafale, Croatian MOD mentioned it will carry Brimstone. You reckon it's possible?

It may be possible since MBDA UK was trying years ago to sell the SPEAR 3 to France, and the Brimstone is a close parent of this system.
Recently Justin Bronk himself, from RUSI, was doing a salesman job at a panel full of French Air Force officials in favor of SPEAR 3.
        Watch at the 12:50 mark.

        ?t=453
This talk happened just as he had the opportunity to fly onboard the Rafale.
However MBDA France has also tried to sell its Smart Glider concept to the French Air Force for years. With the promise to have up to 18 of these gliding bombs under a Rafale.
At the same time the Future AntiShip Missile of the FC/ASW program is also rumored to be able to not only hit ships but also radar sites. However it's going to be a very expensive missile dedicated for HVT only. Pic related.
Dassault had also offered to add Kongsberg's Join Strike Missile to the Rafale weapons capabilities during the HX competition in Finland specifically for the SEAD DEAD mission. But nothing came out of it.
The AASM is rumored to be able to provide a baseline SEAD capability given you can obtain accurate coordinates, but its range would still be kinda limited, between 50 and 70km, and the 125kg variant using Mk81 bombs but the same booster as the 250kg variant, thus adding range, has sadly never been cleared for use due to separation issues. Only the AASM250 and 1000 using respectively Mk82 or Mk84 bombs, are currently available, the second one with the recent F4.1 standard. The 500kg using Mk83 bomb variant is available too but not ordered yet.
I could also mention laser guided 68mm rockets that were on the menu at some time. It went nowhere.

So, lots of possibilities, but not many already available options to cover Brimstone's use, sadly.

Wait, Rafale doesn't have SEAD/DEAD munitions?

            Anonymous

No dedicated ones, no. The whole French Air Force doesn't since the retirement of the AS.37 Martel missile.
So it's either AASM or SCALP. Your choice.
Doesn't seem to work too bad in Ukraine though.

              Anonymous

Yeah but AGM-88 has atrocious kill ratio, meaning that SEAD isn't just "lock on to the first signal you can", implying you need much more SCALPs for a peer or near-peer conflict than MBDA can manufacture.
Logically, cheap radiation hunters that overwhelm enemy AD are a better option that general purpose cruise missiles.

      >this is what i get for not looking at the catalog

      [...]

Nobody here in France is taking this seriously, its just political circus from Vučić.
The guy hedged his bets with Russia (and more recently China) while pissing off all his neighbours and behaving like trash in true Serbian tradition.
But now Russia is deep in the shit and shut off the cum tap, the chinese will own him if he goes anymore with them, his own electorate hates him just slighly less than they hate their neighbors, and the state is almost bankrupt. On top of that, Croatia is currently receiving their Rafales, and there is a UN resolution on the Srebrenica genocide due April 27, and then later, elections are coming.
So now he is desperate to show himself doing something -whatever it is- and find new friends in the West.
Too late to go for France, she's at the beach making out with Croatia.

why is rafale so popular while there's the typhoon and Grippen

      Anonymous

Rafale got an AESA much sooner, has better value for money, had more advanced sensors sooner, a better man machine interface, much more range, is more agile, is made almost entirely by a single country meaning less risks to get blocked by a third party, and its future is guaranteed since France cannot count on any other aircraft in the near future.
It is also more battle proven than the Typhoon is.
The Rafale used to have many flaws, it still has some but none were or are still critical.
If you can't get the F-35 but want to buy western tech, and want no strings attached with the USA, it is the go-to jet.

Marginal orders keep bringing the price down. Hope there happy to get them in 2040 though. Original French armed forces orders are still not fulfilled.
