it MAY be thinly veiled thread so vatniks and chuggers can say "hahaha but it's so easy why can't ukraine get there instantly with all those mobiks" in a similar way russia gets trolled on failing to take a city of 80k in 10 months.

It being probably the most heavily defended area in occupied Ukraine after Crimea.
Maybe they could punch through with the Western equipment, but it would be more costly than doing a bigger land grab exploiting the weak points in the Russian line

I guess you haven't seen how stacked Kreminna is and how many troops in Bakhmut Russia has

Weren't they kind of trying to push there or something? It has more troops but less prepared defenses.
That area isn't as fortified as the road to Melitopol

that shithole is nothing compared to stuff like the Maginot Line, the Atlantic Wall, or the soviet defences at Kursk in WW2 alone

Melitopol is indeed the best line of attack from a logistics point of view, which is also a big ukrainians concern, as we saw when they stopped their advance last winter in the Donbass to not get too far from their supply lines.

But those 100km must have in theory the most fortified russian defences in the whole front, and a direct attack being stalled and losing its TEMPO would be very bad for the ukies.

It all depends on how really good those defences are, if they can be bypassed, or if there are alternative plans to achieve strategic objectives like reaching the Azov Sea to split the russian forces/siege Crimea.

      >fortified russian defences
you mean shitty trenchlines of terrified mobiks? they will run fast if they think they're being surrounded from a western offensive over the river.

otherwise they may not present much an obstacle. they have no morale

        Anonymous

Attacking over the river is mandatory for the ukies despite how dangerous it is and the swamps in the other side, IMO.
Even if it fails, if it drives away enough russian forces from Melitopol for the city to fall it would still be a victory.

I mean they seem to be jumping at shadows at this point and morale is so low the suicide videos are pouring in, so probably will work.

              suicide hole
another guy shot himself after being wounded by drone
one guy answered his grenade telephone and blew his head off
another got drone dropped and then exited by shooting himself after his leg became jello.

All of which are on camera and posted in another thread. not rotating your troops, propaganda, and bleak situations are terrible for the soldier's pysche. Especially, if they know they're not going to get medical treatment.

I had a satellite map of the trenches and other fortifications. Can't find it right now because my Ukraine folder now has about 6000 images & vids in it. Those red dots

        >what could stop them?

do not tell the real story.

I think Ukraine can bull through it (I'm actually quite certain), but the cost may be insane. There's unbelievable amounts of trenchworks and hardened positions. No 10 km cavalry charge is going to do it. It's going to be slogwork, if the vatniks resist at all, with a hideous body count.

Ukraine needs to do this smart, not cowboy.

In particular, pay attention to Melitopol. That's really the major nexus that needs to be cut off. It isolates Crimea and cuts the vatnik occupation in half ... with all of Crimea unable to resupply almost anything of significance. Coming down from Zaporizhzhia is going to be brutal. If a second offensive can bridge the Dnieper and TEMP run from Kherson while a "distracting" push from Zaporizhzhia puts massive pressure on from the North, it's very possible to isolate (not take) Melitopol ... which is all that's needed to put a stopper on the supply lines. Then squeeze toward Berdyansk enough to pressure that supply line shut and Crimea starts to starve quickly while attention to the North & East starts a wave of vatniks running across the border for mommy.

The real trick is to do is fast enough that the vatniks can't evacuate their equipment or loot, just run across the border in their bare feet. Deny them as much equipment and resources as possible so they can't try to push back in.

yep, hence a western offensive over the river is key. make the ziggers panic and run from the north

Have you thought about the defence of said salient? Even if you drive 10 km deep you are going to meet fierce squashing and risk your forces in a foreseeable cauldron.
