idk but id shoot somali pirates for free

the vast majority of the time you're just sitting on your ass doing nothing on a boat in the middle of the ocean
maybe that sounds good to some people but I think that that would get really boring really fast

would you be allowed to operate (your own) shortwave equipment (amateur radio or maritime bands) to get some email in over shortwave every day for instance?

I worked for an alphabet agency doing high threat PSD stuf during GWOT. Because of ops tempo our teams were usually mostly contractor with a gov team leader. These were the glory days of contracting where our contracts paid maybe $1209/say IIRC and around $750 for the guys who did static security. Got to know guys who definitely made a killing and heard them talk about the ins and outs of different companies and gigs. I don’t know anyone who did maritime security but I remember seeing the mockup ship they had a Blackwater where they were doing cool guy drills.

Why bother jumping through hoops to guard ships when you can just get a boat from a local marina, modify it and start looting container ships?

they dont want you to know this, but the container ships are free

Hundreds of containers fall off the ships every year. A few getting cracked open is already priced in

          >Hundreds of containers fall off the ships every year
I saw one falling when crossing the Strait of Gibraltar with the Spanish Navy. It was a moroccan ship clearly overloaded, we couldn't even see the bridge with the amount of containters it had.

Had a cousin who did after finshing his contracts in the army.
He would not talk that much about it, only told me that, even if the boat moves a loat, you have to perform/operate and that when you encounter pirates, they are very driven to capture hostages.

I'm on an overseas security contract for DoS. It's unarmed and not all that interesting, but it pays well (120k) considering I don't have a mil or LE background. My first security job was literally nightshift sitting in a closed office building. Talking with coworkers, high speed jobs don't seem that common since the GWOTs died down. Stuff on the government side still exists but it's kept between a much smaller and more elite circle.

last armed security contract I saw was $18.50/hr with 1 week PTO, up to 14 days UPTO, dental, vision, and a HC deductible of $4000.
    and BYOG.

You were in more danger working at Walmart than your typical freighter.

I thought they have to throw the guns in the water before docking to get around gun importation laws.

I read about it once and I think it said that in most ports armed security can get special dispensation but only if it isn't a scary full auto baby killer rifle
Hence the proliferation of Saigas and other commercial semi autos on the seas

So what are the best sites to find private security jobs?

Not a security contractor but I worked as a contractor with a handful of companies; most notably CaCI and Triple Canopy before it was absorbed into Constellis and then there for a year. in various support/analyst roles. While I didn't do static posts I knew a lot of guys that did as we all lived in the same container shack city off base. Those jobs fricking suck, they pay terribly and they only really pay off when your tax liability is drastically reduced if you're out of the country for 330 days. I sat in an air conditioned sealed box while those days sweat it out on 12 - 16 hour days. Most of them had done maritime security and hated it comparative to sandbox shit as there's even less to do all day. Not super useful but I could try and answer any questions I can having wasted 3 years of my life adjacent to those guys.
