Scrounging Weaponry From Strange Places

in cars, they have "seatbelt retractors", they contain an explosive charge, which can be used to shoot projectiles
its especially easy to use in the fact that you only need to give it an electric charge, instead of having to build an entire mechanism
meaning all thats required is a barrel, a chamber, and a battery, and you got a gun, even in the most policed of places
what other interesting places have you found that contain possible weaponry?

i have a feeling the old & scrapped cars that were sitting in a dirt lot that haven't moved since 2006 aren't up under the most watchful of eyes
most especially when they're actively being sold for parts in a scrapyard
also a great place to get free lead too

If you're gonna do that why not steal the sodium azide in airbags

interesting stuff i never new these existed. can they be used as ready made cheap detonators to set off secondary explosives?

      Anonymous

i don't think so, since they're more gas than anything else, but they do have a cap in them, so its possible that "could" work
i think theres easier homemade stuff for detonators though

dont airbags also have these little explosives too? im sure with modern cars that have like 5+ seatbelts and 5+ airbags you could scavenge an entire magazine worth of of bullet components for your post apocalypse scrapgun. could also take out any ball bearing to use for bullets of just melt down the lead wheel weights etc. now that i think about it making a gun from only car components seems pretty easy.

i wouldn't frick with airbags, honestly
unless you're going for a big boom & know exactly what you're doing, you might as well be trying to dissemble the trigger of a wienered & loaded gun, all while staring down the barrel
i'd post some of the explosives knowledge i know, but i don't feel like getting banned for posting publicly available info (its too bad, because that shits just flat out cool, and great to know when making realistic videogames / stories)

naw, posting actual bomb tutorials will get you got, at least on here
and while not "illegal", you can get it trouble in a weird way
sure i could give instructions for "pyrotechnics", but its wouldn't exactly be a cover at this point lol
i still think its bullshit though, i remember first learning how to make bombs because of fallout, and i wanted to make accurate stories for a setting in the apocalypse & whatnot
its just really cool stuff, not that i'd actually make them, i like being alive, having all my limbs, etc
i guess its easy enough to learn elsewhere though, theres only so many ways to make a fire, and ironically, the easiest bombs to make are ones by accident

. I didn't get back here to reply til now, but I see that someone else jumped in. The point of being so blunt and openly insulting was to ensure that your claim would not go unchallenged and could not be used with the intention of demoralization trolling, it that were indeed the ulterior motive. What counts as strange? Weapons are a bit like crabs. Most machines can be construed as either coming or going on the murder/k/ube evolutionary cycle at most times. So iunno, it's hard for me to intuit any machine as a strange place to find the makings of a machine but for violent :].

Random non-strange but mb interesting stuff that springs to mind for me:

    • Powder-actuated tools, better known as ramsets, are just weird guns. Typically chambered in .22 / .25 / .27. Ramset 22LR conversions are fun projects, and they attract a much less schizobraindamage crowd than flaregun conversions.

Comes to mind because it's an example of the same thing as your OP: almost any bit of engineering that (1) handles high impulse (2) in a compact form factor and (3) does so non-pneumatically, is gonna be ripe for tearing apart and rebuilding into a bespo/k/e weapon.

    • Certain smart lightbulbs are basically landmines that haven't self-actualized.

    • Fog machines, humidifiers, and all manner of common appliances that deal in diffusion are readily repurposed for noxious effects.

    • Aluminum and tinplate cans. We'll prob never stop finding new uses for them.

    • Golf balls exploded in design diversity and material complexity over the past 10-20 years. Some have very unique properties as projectiles and some have guts that would make for interesting effects as donor materials in shotgun slugs, rifle grenades, drone-dropped munitions, etc.

I especially like the plutonium-core golf balls. Hit them hard enough and the core compresses and you take out your golf-playing opponent.

NTA but some kind of part A and part B for a 2 part polymer foam. Basically resin that foams up when mixed. It can be a fricking mess. Both parts on their own, unmixed, are really sticky and will be forever unless they get baked in the sun for a couple weeks open to air. Also releases pretty nasty (cancer causing/neurologically damaging) fumes from what I hear and believe it or not, gives off no smell unlike resin while curing. Fricking spooky. Wear a respirator and use it outside. It's used in stuff like fence post holes, insulation, foam decorations (think 1970s painted owl wall hanging decorations), boat hulls (closed cell for buoyancy), art/sculpture (maybe in place of plaster?), and foam forms for taxidermy.

All automobile airbags are class 1.1 explosive devices, I know this having shipped them. Requires ATF forms, approval and a DOT route. It is the final thing pick-and-pull removes from the car before it's crushed. There is enough explosive in it to make an igniter for a bomb although you'd need a blasting cap. Most blasting caps are class 1 explosives and difficult to obtain in a way the ATF cannot easily track/verify/intimidate.
