I like that erotic story where they upgrade the A-10 to allow pilots to mentally link with their craft and he forms a bond attachment to it.
The aircraft firing makes him cum and the pilot eventually must try to stop a jealous crew chief who is trying to steal the A-10 for himself.

This sounds like thinly disguised furry fanfiction, including their trope of making something incapable of giving consent to consent to sex through plot magic

I mean a lot of military nerds and actual military men were furries so it's probably true.

People focus on the gun not being able to penetrate tank armor and not how it can engage APCs, trucks, artillery, treelines etc with high efficency.

Also both sides use Su-25s to lob unguided rockets, A-10 could totally still work in Ukraine.

I mention this all the time. The A-10 is the ultimate COIN plane.

Absolutely gigabased, though for me Hellcats Over the Pacific was my first and that too was a hell of a cool game for the time and actually impressively realistic given the sub-toaster hardware it had to run on. They even shipped it with a full nice copy of the Hellcat manual, like the original full one. Man that takes me back. A-10 Attack! was by the same guys but massively improved in every way, particularly in explicitly trying to make it friendly to mess with. They came up with a whole cool plugin system for it too. Don't see HUDs like that much these days.

        Anonymous

oh man seeing that made me remember: you could actually manipulate that whole hud directly, like, in 1995. didn't have to remember keyboard command tho probably you'd want to, but all those controls "worked". you would press some button, then mouse would turn into a hand and you flip switches, turn knobs and press buttons. man young me found that so cool.

little did i know how everything would turn to console controls 30 years later.

Low operating costs. Supports many modern PGMs and the same payload rating as an F-16. Very high readiness rates and low maintenance requirements compared to the rest of the fleet. The only combat aircraft in USAF inventory that has austere capability.

F-16s operate just fine from austere locations. I've been there working on them right next the A-10s at KKMC during Desert Storm.

A-10 was never designed for COIN and the ultimate COIN plane is easily the OV-10 Bronco which was designed for that role and, importantly, packed with enough radios (HF, 2x VHF FM wired to relay ground comms by receiving on one then xmitting on the other at a different frequency, VHF AM, UHF with Have Quick) and a back seater to manage other assets.

USAF and USMC loathing for anything not a jet (though for some reason helicopters whose performance is vastly inferior to Bronco were kept) retired them so nothing similar existed for GWOT to provide loitering C4ISR and attack. That's one reason Operation Red Wings had no air cover. A loitering Bronco could have provided line-of-sight radio relay without sat phones (as it did before most GWOT troops were born) and hosed Talibs with FFAR and 4x M60.

A-10 was designed to kill Soviet tanks before getting close enough for gun runs meant eating a MANPAD. They're easy to repair but easy to hit which happened often in Desert Storm. They don't have Bronco loiter time which is why a few Bronco were upgraded for C4ISR and COIN attack missions with APKWS until drones made that pointless. For COIN drones now rule the roost not least because they don't require CSAR which is a heinously expensive and dangerous burden, the movie Bat 21 covering one catastrophe).

Any fighter can kill anything A-10 can kill more survivably and at this point the JTAC is the key player since they can be just as accurate with a B-52 supporting them from well out of range.

Remove one turbine, add tail rotor, add main rotor and only then it might still work in today's battlefield.

Helicopters exist to get shot down against anyone with MANPADS and AAA as thousands of helicopters in Southeast Asia attest. Karbala is more recent reminder as was Mogadishu. The far better way to kill shit is empty a strategic bomber or your preferred fighters at standoff range so the enemy dies never seeing what fired at him.

If lasers continue to improve at the current rate (and turbofans have improved a LOT from the old TF34s) I can theorycraft an A-10 style of plane becoming viable once again, it wouldn't take a whole lot to neutralize MANPADS and a big ass brick with ablative armor might actually do better vs very high power AA lasers then a modern fighter. But ultimately I think the window for having anything like that vs more drones is about closed. Won't be worth having any manned attack aircraft that close anymore at all. I don't think helicopters will be immune either medium term.

Mount an generator and laser in place of the F-35B lift fan. Already has a hell of a PTO shaft.

Since when is a permanent military base considered austere conditions? F-16's are liable to lose an engine if you don't do a FOD walk. That doesn't sound like austere capability to me.

Feels bad man. Unironically they should have just offered to let any old warthog pilots who wanted to volunteer to do so and sold the planes to Ukraine for $1 or something rather then just scrap them as obsolete like we're going to. Even if they were all ultimately shot down that highway, and the overall war, would have been one hell of a fitting finale.

          Blocked on the US side

The 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine led to some observers pushing for A-10s to be loaned to Ukraine while critics noted the diplomatic and tactical complications involved.[155][156] In an interview in December 2022, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov said that in late March he asked the US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin for 100 surplus A-10s, noting their value against Russian tank columns. However, Austin reportedly told Minister Reznikov that the plan was "impossible", and that the "old-fashioned and slow" A-10 would be a "squeaky target" for Russian air defenses.[157]

It's very good for what it's designed for, a peer to peer conflict where air supremacy is being maintained so it can raid and destory everything softer than a tank, especially logistics vehicles. It's also nice CAS aircraft with high loiter time as it uses a gun rather than bombs/missiles.

The sound the gun makes will always be fun at a distance. But it's still a flawed concept with niche that's dwindling. Well it's just like Attack Helicopters but an even worse situation imo.

I wonder if the USAF sends the bottom barrel pilots and maintainers to the A-10 squadrons. With congress blocking retirement thats what I would do.

      Anonymous

As someone who has worked with A-10 maintainers, they most certainly are NOT bottom of the barrel. With the A-10 being divested they will start cross training those guys to work on F-35s probably. Oh, and F-16 maintainers are fricking wienersuckers. Hate em, simple as

Any combat aircraft is going to be a more competitive seat than non combat. The bottom pilot candidates probably end up in C-130s.
