SAAB CEO has tapped out

https://www.janes.com/defence-news/news-detail/saab-ceo-frustrated-at-slow-pace-of-gripen-sales
>Saab's president and CEO, Micael Johansson, has told reporters of his ‘extreme frustration' at the lack of recent sales of the company's Gripen combat aircraft.

>Speaking to Janes and other defence media at the company's Stockholm headquarters on 26 August, Johansson conceded that the single-engined ‘Euro-canard' had struggled to meet the export expectations that his predecessors had laid out for the multirole fighter, saying that this was not a reflection on the quality of the aircraft, but was down to politics.

>“It is extremely frustrating to say the least, and I can say that it is not about the [Gripen] product that we have developed and manufactured. If it had been a completely level playing field in terms of not talking about security, politics, and other areas, then I think we would have been much better off [in terms of securing sales],” Johansson said, adding, “In many countries, the leverage of the US is tremendous. They are not so easy to work against [in the market], and it is politics.”

>Johansson's comments came on the back of a fallow few years in terms of securing additional sales for either its earlier Gripen C/D or its latest Gripen E/F range, with international sales campaigns having scored no successes since Brazil joined the Gripen E/F programme in 2014.

He's not wrong. Weapon sales are first and foremost politics and job programs completely independent of the actual product. For some smaller European countries the Swedish plane would have been an affordable and viable alternative.

      >the Swedish plane would have been an affordable and viable alternative

Due to economies of scale and increased part production, I believe that the per unit price for the F-35 is now comparable to the Gripen.

Your parents will find you, heartbroken but relieved that they no longer have to live with the unbearable shame and disappointment. I've been carefully watching and studying you. You've had to change your initial tactics from the ones you had typically employed on reddit. Instead of shilling for neoliberal values, now you try to appeal to government authoritarianism to reel in what you perceive as "fascist" types (see also: NATO-wave). Also you figured out that PrepHole has an age-based hierarchy, so you try to LARP as oldgays, even though you still demonstrate a clear lack of understanding of board culture.

Cope. Know that what you're doing, to enable the government to control the private political discourse of its citizens, is bringing to the west the same type of authoritarianism that you claim to be fighting. That should scare you.

Well it is true. Who do you want to be on best boy relations with, the leading military nation or one of the little players? So nations buy American because that also buys a measure of American support. But Sweden doesn't really have the right to complain about that specific issue. For so many years they have been making foreign military sales on the basis of being a neutral player, happily selling to both sides in any given conflict because they could get away with it. Now neutrality don't mean shit anymore because there is only one powerful and wealthy side left in most potential conflicts. It's Sweden who needs to update their selling strategies.

Sucks that Gripen is struggling but I hope that as Sweden is close to joining NATO that they can join the F-35 production club or even one of the other multinational fighter projects.

Don't be such ridiculous. FA-50 has orders of magnitude better electronics than the old Phantom but it can't replace its place as a bomb carriage with a max payload of 18,650 lb(9t). Also, South Korea has shit tons of AGM-142 surplus and the Phantom II is the only aircraft that can launch it in air.

The FA-50s aesa has one of the lowest T/R module counts out there on par with the Rafale which is extremely limited by the size of the nose. Korea's aesa tech simply isn't there yet. The KF-21 is still up in the air if it would get a Korean or Israeli radar. Israel, the place with literally no aerospace industry is a competitive match for their radars. Even if Korea's radar tech was top of the line it would still be worse than the F-16 simply because of the space available and how big the radar can be. You can have denser arrays like pic rel, but pics of the FA-50 aesa that have popped up show a standard aesa without that efficiency.

                https://www.flightglobal.com/fixed-wing/raytheon-unveils-compact-half-priced-gallium-nitride-aesa-radar/145611.article
                >Sandfier claims the compact AESA ought to have better performance than the radar installed on the US Air Force’s (USAF) F-16 fleet, the Northrop Grumman SABR APG-83 AESA.

                >“The compact AESA solution draws less power from the platform, which in turn allows for the radar to deliver targeting and tracking capabilities on par, if not better than, the bigger, heavier APG-83 AESA radar,” he says. ”The compact AESA solution has digital beam forming and steering, multimode functionality and interleaved ground and air targeting”.

                >Raytheon’s yet-to-be-named compact AESA radar weighs about 59kg (130lb), about one third as much as radars on sale currently, says Dick Sandfier, strategic pursuits and business creation capture executive at Raytheon Intelligence & Space. The radar is roughly 71 x 37cm (28 x 14.5in) and is air cooled.

and a maximum speed of Mach 1.5 is hardly slow since most of the a2a combats happen below mach 1.2. Also it can hit both the same max flight range with a new 300 gallon tank.

And now compare that to a F-16. It's significantly slower, and has a much lower range. Same with the Typhoon and Rafale.

FA-50 is twice as high fuel efficienct than the F-16 and it's also designed to carry more since the graphite skin on the wing allows it to hold up to 9 tons of payload, but then the thrust to weight coefficiency will suffer which ultimately locked it down to 5.5t. Nonetheless, it's still as good as Gripen C.

The wing itself is designed with a growth potential of being able to safely carry as much payload until 20,000 lb(9t). Since this isn't the first time they've reinforced the wing, it wouldn't be too hard for them to pull off its full potential while also replacing the current F404 with F414.

It's just the reality that a small nation can not cost effectively make competitive jets. Hard to beat the mass production inertia that the F-35 has. Lockheeb is producing ~150 F-35 every year for however many years into the future. That might be more than the entire production run of the new Gripen even if they get some export deals. And when so many nations are buying the F-35 you are guaranteed to have spare parts and software/hardware upgrades available for the foreseeable future. But it is kind of sad to see the variety slowly disappear. Competition is always good.

Gripen is a decent little plane, but it costs too much for what it is. If you want cutting-edge capability, you buy F-35. If you want a 4.5th gen luxury option, F-15. If you're shopping more down-market, F-16 is as common as dirt and so are the people that can fly them and work on them. A tiny European country is never going to compete with American logistics and economies of scale, and they can't compete on tech either - don't take my word for it, see who manufactures what parts. Gripen is just too late to market, and this seething and failure to cope makes them look silly.

If they would dare to offer it to countries like Iran and China, they'd have to re-do the plane, since over half of it is American and we're not going to allow the Swedes to sell to our enemies.

Sweden has been run by feminist and super liberals for a couple of decades now. Can't do weapons deals with a country like that unless you want just something for a parade.

The best universities in South Korea today were founded by Japan. The first leaders of South Korea were Japanese educated (Japan also destroyed the old Korean feudal system, introduced public education and permitted girls to attend school). The Japanese brought running water and electricity to the country, which had been intermittently a backwater hermit kingdom or chinese vassal over the centuries. The Japanese occupation was harsh yes, but to say that Korea was even remotely on par with Japan or even turn of the century China is blindingly arrogant.

To be fair, Gripen was designed to succeed Viggen which was just designed to fight Soviets in Sweden, by the time Gripen was finished the Soviet Union imploded and the demand by the Swedish govt for a new plane wasn't there.
So no 5th gen or better design was really made or had any demand from the state, and there's still the hurdle of being a small country population wise.
Sweden's jets mostly resulted from its neutrality. Gripen will probably be replaced by a future 6th gen that I'd wager SAAB collabrates on way down the line.

Or the 6th gen will be similar to the Gripen in that it's cobbled together from existing 6th gen tech and some Swedish stuff

The problem with Gripen is that it is a 50 cc hot rodded moped trying to compete with 125-250 cc motorbikes. It is simply too small. When a country buys a new aircraft, it buys a certain number, and intend to use these aircrafts for 30-40 years. With this in mind, that country's airforce will go for the biggest, most powerful fighter it can get. The moped Gripen simply cant compete with motorcycles.

The choice of using american IP in the fighter (bad idea always) was another bad idea. The Gripen consortium consisted of people with a background in economics and capital management, not engineers, so they just picked an engine off shelf and had their techs tinker a bit with it, but its that engine that fricks up their ability to sell abroad. Aaaaand the funniest thing is that this shitty small engine that makes Gripen so gimped.

This plane would have been amazing in the 90s, going up against a 5th gen with better support and industrial capacity behind it is a death sentence in the 2020s.

Even against F16s, F18s and F15s the SAAB just isn't that amazing, it does nothing these legacy fighters can't do and they do it at a cheaper price with a gajillion spare parts out there in the market.

The difference is the FA50 is not even considered an advanced jet fighter in SK, in SK it is actually considered a trainer that surpisingly happened to be better than other non-US jet fighters, but the K2 is a different beast, its designed to be the best (and most expensive) mbt on the planet and its not even close, most advanced fcs in the world + 10km main gun range with greater kinetic force than any other mbt (vs 5km with lower kinetic force on the M1A2 sep3), can operate under and over water, can target most vulnerable spots and hit targets even on top or behind, etc.

            Anonymous

K2 has a shit engine and weak side armor. It’s designed for korean use. The theory is that it would have mountains on both flanks and only engage from the front. Not a good choice for most nations. No one considers it the most advanced tank in the world

              Anonymous

K2 engine produces 1500 hp, same as M1A2sep3 + K2 has better acceleration

The armor is better on M1A2sep3 but K2 uses mmc instead of depleted uranium, mmc is far superior and can be easily upgraded for flat terrains to provide better side armor than the M1s, see K2PL

Everybody considers K2 the best and its not even close, that's why they despite costing the most they are selling better more the M1s

Also, m1 requires a crew of 4 literally 1950s tech with a soldier loading rounds, k2 has autoloader with a crew of 3

The the biggest difference and why the K2 costs a lot more than the M1 is that it has a main gun range of 10km with greater kinetic force compared to the M1 with a range of 5km (the sep3, the other M1s have a range of 3km) with lower kinetic force

How long does it take an M1 to close a 5km distance over terrain and can they dodge rounds the entire time as they try to close the distance gap? lol

It’s better to have a loader. 1 more crew member to help with maintenance, security, and turret watch. Plus Autoloaders are inherently more likely to cause a catastrophic kill the tank is penetrated. Auto loaders are also another failure point.

The other nations like france, uk, israel sell their mbts at less than $5 million per unit and nobody buys it still, the chinese and russian tanks are probably around $1 million per unit or less on the western market

K2s have are a low production run tank. Of course the tank with 10,000 units is going to be cheaper, even though it’s better

There are currently 260 K2 produced and 363 ordered, that's already 623 tanks in total. The very reason why they're able to deliver the first 180 tanks to Poland in such a short period of time is because there were Korean military orders that had already been placed and went into production.

Are you not understanding what he wrote or just conveniently undermining the true meaning of his saying? The biggest advantage of K2 is that it's got an active production line, and it means it has preserved much of the supply chain needed for the production of a tank during peace time, so that they can later ramp up production in an emergency. Not many country is possible to do this.

What do you want the CEO to say? "My company can’t compete with a 5th gen product by a defense giant"? Of course not. So it’s going to be about playing fields and politics. And it’s a high-tech plane, you can’t just sell it for peanuts; its r&d has to be paid for. The high quality workforce building them has to be paid for. It sucks that they made such a good plane just to have it fail in the market simply because it came out at the same time as a 5th gen hit.

      Anonymous

You know what else they could also do? They could just find another niche to fill. Other 4th gens still managed to get foreign sales despite the F-35 being on sale.

What truly doomed Gripen's sale is it's mediocre. An expensive, mediocre fighter. If you wanted a cheap and/or light fighter, buy FA-50, Tejas and JF-17. Want something meatier? Get the Falcon and Super Hornet if you are friend with America, Rafale if you don't want American stuffs but still want Western gibs or J-10 if you had to. If you want heavyweight fighter, there's the Eagle and various Flankers available. If you can afford it, get the F-35. Want independent 5th gen options? Get KF-21 when it on sale or join in various nations' programs.

What Gripen offers that others couldn't?

Doesn’t the KF-21 use American engines? It also doesn’t have an internal weapons bay

Which is why I also add the "join in various nations' programs" part. Now that I remembered it, China also has the FC-31 promoted for foreign sales as well. As for the internal bays, current version of KF-21 doesn't have it yet, but Block II will have it as standard.

Possibly now that the F16s are largely obsolete, the gauge of how close an ally can be measured by what jet fighters they are permitted to acquire

              F22 (best available): US only
F35 (next best available): only closest allies, with the closest allies already having operational F35s and the next closest allies have F35s on order
F15 (close ally but not quite in the inner circle): allies but not fully trustable
F16 (allies but barely): unstable government, can't be trusted with 1st, 2nd or 3rd best tier stuff
F4/F5 (allies but need to be kept on a leash in some form): can't even be trusted to be responsible with F16s which is three tiers removed the best available

SK just announced a record defense budget larger than Japan, France, etc. They are going to evaluate whether to developed an aircraft carrier (which costs a lot more) or just buy it and are prioritizing the record defense budget towards nuclear subs, hypersonics, ai stealth drones, kf21s, more F35 purchases (already the largest number in the world outside the US), and more K2 black panthers among others

Good, honestly. From the outset the project was a moronic compensation meme started by Moon's administration because Japan was converting the Kaga and Izumo to lightning carriers, there is no practical need for a carrier in Korea's current strategy or geopolitical position. Wondering how long it'll take before Moon is being investigated for some stupid shit.

SK has the same helicopter carriers that Japan converted to aircraft carriers, but the controversy was that Moon wanted to develop a proper aircraft carrier instead of either converting the existing helicopter carriers or buying from the US, SK government confirmed they need an aircraft carrier but need to assess whether to develop, buy or convert helicarriers in order to prioritize other systems to include nuclear subs...

The Dokdos are nice ships from the little I saw on a visit, I think the issue with converting them to 35 carriers would be the same worry the USN has with their lightning carrier LHD concept in that they're diesel powered landing ships with well decks, and as such not particularly fast and that is a lot of missions to stuff into one ship. The Izumos by comparison are a comically large destroyer hullform complete with hull mounted sonar and COGAG propulsion, the narrow beam of which will no doubt limit hangar space but provides speed. It'll also bring the limitation of having to choose between missions (asw vice full carrier) so I guess I can see where the koreans are coming from with the idea of dropping the extra dough to just have a ship for each role.

          Anonymous

South Korea absolutely does not have the same level. The 27,000t, 248m Izumo's are basically the minimum size to operate F-35s and Kaga is currently having a bow extension
to help. The Dokdo's are only 19,500 and 199m which isn't even close to operating F-35s and are closer to Japan's smaller Hyuga class which are remaining helicopter ASW platforms.
Korea actually did announce they were going to convert the Dokdo's literally the day after a possible Izumo conversion was leaked only to have to immediately backpedal after wasting a
bunch of money on a public tender study to show they were missing 50m and 8,000t of displacement.

At first people thought that they would just have just the deck reshaped, but both Izumo's are having their bow sliced off and replaced to increase hanger space. Stuff at and below the water line seems to remain intact.

          >It'll also bring the limitation of having to choose between missions (asw vice full carrier)
Even after converting the Izumo and Kaga Japan has 2 more purely for ASW work in the form of Ise and Hyuga.
