        >a WWII era 100mm .. I wouldn't take my chances with that against a MBT frontally

The 2A29 is a little more potent than that though. It was originally developed as the next-generation main armament for the T-62, but the rounds proved too long for the loader to handle inside the turret (picrel). The best anti-armor round it’s issued is 3BM23, which at close range can actually perforate the front of a T-64BV with the older 3-layer textolite glacis at close range. It can also serve as an indirect-fire artillery piece, but it’s poorly suited for this because of it’s smoothbore barrel and high-pressure shells. Overall, it can still threaten most Ukie tanks in the hands of a well-trained crew, but saying all that it’s still in every way inferior to either a Kornet or 120/122mm mortar/artillery piece in every conceivable way. A towed anti-tank gun has no place on a modern battlefield, and it’s pathetic that Russian troops are forced to rely upon such an archaic weapon.

The MT-12 isn't even the oldest piece of kit the Ukrainians have captured recently. They captured three KS-19 AA guns in thus offensive that were apparently used for indirect fire. These guns were designed in the 40s, and their production stopped in 1955.

T-72 has (or is supposed to have) night vision, or at least an IR lamp
IS-3 relies on thick steel armor, T-72 has textolite/steel on its hull and NERA/steel in its turret

IS-3 is about 30 years earlier than the T-72 and is worse in just about every way
Especially agaisnt HEAT, the T-72 was supposed to withstand the iTOW on the front and had near immunity to the M47 dragon and LAW,the IS-3 would have trouble withstanding an RPG-7

          Anonymous

T-72 has a bigger and much more powerful gun
T-72 has much better protection (IS-3 is APC tier against APFSDS while T-72 with ERA can beat cold war munitions from the front)
T-72 has a more powerful engine
          T-72 is lighter
T-72 has, albeit still shitty, much better optics and targeting systems, including image amplifiers or even thermals depending on the model

It's not even a contest. Shit as it is, the T-72 is still 30 years newer as a chassis and 70 years newer in terms of equipment on the higher end upgraded models

Ukraine has an excuse, they are, or were, the underdog. When the war first started, Ukraine needed every single last bit of equipment that could shoot a bullet/shell as NATO support hadn't truly arrived yet. Russia was the military that was supposed to be the second most powerful nation in the world and if you are truly at that level, you should not be using major military hardware like a fricking towed anti-tank gun from the 1960s. But, at least now we know that Russia is far, far from being the second most powerful nation in the world, so I guess it works itself out in the end?

No, the USMC uses it, and that's fine for them because they're not expected to operate on their own. They will always have support from the Navy F-18's & F-35's.

Towed anti-tank guns on the other hand are a big no-no in even the 1970s/1980s as Night Vision and Thermals began to become a common piece of equipment for soldiers and vehicles. You can't move a towed anti-tank gun quickly, and its doctrine does NOT work in an offensive role when you have to be constantly moving. Defensively, it's "fine" in a pinch, but definitely not preferred.

Again, there's a big difference between using outdated hardware and using outdated tactics, of which the towed anti-tank role falls under the latter.

Let's not forget Russia doing jackshit about COVID, just releasing their "Sputnik vaccine" out of nowhere, with zero trials whatsoever to the point the head of their health agency quit over that, from where we know it had only a 20% effectiveness AT BEST for the INITIAL MUTATION (so MUCH less with Omikron, even more so since non-m-RNA vaccines retain less effectiveness across mutations than m-RNA vaccines do)

Because of that COVID has been running rampant with zero effective measures against it, even more because Putin wanted to maintain the illusion of normalcy. Their OFFICIAL death toll is already 820,000 and even that is likely underestimated.

On top of that Russian media is BEGGING it's people to get vaccinated while saying vaccines are evil in the West. Because of that initial distrust and the shitty Sputnik vaccine while refusing to import m-RNA ones means barely anyone is actually vaccinated.

In other words: Putin's strategy against COVID is comparable to his military genius in Ukraine, with predictable results for the population.

Did you even spend five minutes to think why the lockdowns were put in place or why people were told to wear masks?

At the onset of Covid it was dangerous, and it got more dangerous with Delta up until recently where it's more contagious but barely does anything to you because of the efforts to curtail it. Delta got stopped pretty quickly because the lockdown measures got harsher for that time and it died out because Omicron became the primary strain after that.
Italy as a country imploded because it didn't have the hospital space for how many people got sick, were permanently damaged by the disease, or died because of it. New York was ridiculously swamped because of it. Hell, China literally locked down entire cities and destroyed their economy several times to stop it because of how easily it could spread. You were constantly hearing about how they literally could not bury or burn bodies fast enough for how many people were getting sick in certain regions.

Masks were not some sort of invincible shield for the person wearing it, and it didn't fully stop the particulates either, but it condensed the distance the particulates could go and forced you to have to be closer to a person for them to be an issue because it would spread out of the openings rather than in front of you. It would also catch your coughs or sneezes that would typically come out right in front of you.

To this day we still have people talking about the effects on their lungs after Covid. People died because of Covid, and it wasn't just old people or the infirm. If the lockdowns didn't happen we'd reach Delta and then what? You'd just want to chance going out every day, catching it, and having permanently messed up lungs and potentially lose your sense of smell/taste for the rest of your life? The fact that less people were out on the streets, at venues, or in public meant that there was less chance to spread, mutate, and get contained enough to diminish its chance of doing anything.

I wonder what the hell is Putin thinking.
H started the entire two week special operation because he was concerned about his legacy, and wanted to go down in history.
Does he really think the following generations will revere him, and continue this bullshit when he dies? Obviously whoever comes next comes next will just change the narrative and blame everything on him. There is no way he can expect the Russian state to operate like this.

This really tells you everything you need to know. Russians believe they're the main characters of reality. The cult of the """Great Patriotic War""" is probably the only thing that keeps Russia together today. They have no national identity. The Soviets shaped the dead Red Army soldiers as martyrs that died so that they can live today. Basically like a commie allegory to Jesus Christ dying for the sins of humanity with Nazis as Satan. Every fricking shithole village in the middle of the taiga, no matter how small, will have some type of monument to the "Great Patriotic War" so that every squinty eyes kalmyk will remember everyday that his grand parents died fighting for a country that he has basically no connection to. Stalin and his successors built a cult of delusion that Russians (kind of like israelites) are the chosen people to lead the world order and that millions of people died for that. Start talking to a Russian about history or politics and you will see a worldview so deranged you wish you had never asked. They will always find the new "Nazis" to fight even though no Russian can explain what a Nazi is. It's just how they are, the homosexual sovieticus is a real thing, not just a concept.

        Anonymous

I was just thinking today that not only does this sort of conflict cultism run the neo-USSR, but it's cultism for a government that didn't even last a century. Shit's bananas, but I guess homosexual sovieticus can only ever think in terms of bananas.

Depends on who gets in power in Turkey. The opposition's latest promise is to become friends with Assad, then shovel back all Syrians back into Syria, then somehow prevent those Syrians from attacking Asad or Turkey when they get put between a rock and a hard place.
That could either rescue Assad (suddenly he will have competent allies) or destroy him (suddenly he will lose Russian support AND face 10 million discontent Syrians pushed back into the country)/

Turn it around and use it to fire at Russians.
When ammo runs out, just melt it down and recycle it into something useful.

    Stupid question time!
These things are obviously outdated as frick to be used according to their original doctrine. Would you be able to set a trap with it?
    >tank rolls up
    >sets off wire 100m from where the gun is
    >gun, being unmanned, completely covered/concealed except for where the barrel is point
    >insta tank kill, panic among everyone else
not even a vatnik coping im just curious if thats feasible

You're better off just taking the shells and making an IED out of them at that point

it's 52 years old, that's not that old for certain types of weapons, i mean AK is 75yo design and it does the job.

The MT-12 isn't totally hopeless but you should compare it to the T-55 or T-62, not to a small arm. Small arms peaked with the Sturmgewehr and everything since has been iterating on the same formula.

fedorov was small arms peak, unlike BAR it was actually possible to fire "on the move" and hit shit.
soviets wanted to make lots more, but arisaka cartridge was hard to come by.

6.5 Arisaka was weak for a rifle cartridge but still has 1000J more energy than 5.56, it's not really an intermediate cartridges and wasn't designed to be. The StG used a purpose-designed rimless intermediate cartridge.

my point is we had functional modern assault rifle by early 20th century, but it was in russian hands, so of course they failed to see the full potential and didn't focus on improving the design or try to design some alternatives.

Yeah. But they didn't exactly invade a neighboring country with them now, did they?
If the US got invaded, they'd defend themselves with everything, but you don't see them kitting out expeditionary forces with Garands.

Rapira is still a capable antitank weapon, nowadays a kornet is preferred but you put rapira on the flanks to screen, not like they have to move with the main effort.

      >but you put rapira on the flanks to screen
this was a possible move back in WW2, but nowadays thats just asking for air-busting munitions

Obv it's not used to hunt tanks anymore

Something that war thunder has teach me is that a WWII gun can perfectly destroy a modern tank if you hit the tank in the correct place.

It's basically a very upgraded smooth bore version of the T-55's gun, can fire ATGM's, HE and APFSDS, it will frick up anything that gets hit , UKA is also using them heavily. Some Ukrainian Artillery unit converted their MT-LB's into tank destroyers/assault guns with them.

I also think the sights have radar or some early Soviet FLIR? Anyway, something similar using NATO 120mm and thermals could be a pretty nice AT set up for defensive positions tbh

What do you regards think the Russian's are facing?

They're fighting cold war hand me downs, Brits sent them 1960's Saracens and Americans sent them Humvees. They also got some BMPs and T-72's from czech. These guns will blow them to shit.

      >These guns will blow them to shit.
the bigger issue is that the gun is a massive, stationary weapon with no roof

"These guns" are literally incapable of penetrating any 60 year old MBT from the front.
