Russians swear the Su-57 is a 5th gen stealth fighter on par with or better than than the F-22/35 but they are using them to lob R-37M from 200km behind the front. Can it really be both? sounds kinda contradictory to me senpai

Any plane can be shot down, even a 5th Gen fighter, let alone a “”””””5th Gen””””””” plane like Su-57

Its because their RCS is literally on par with the f-18 super hornet. Its rcs is about 1,000 times more larger than the f-35

In all fairness, I don't know if the US would have used F-22s in the Gulf War if it happened 5ish years later. Risking your shiny new stealth fighter in a place that actually has competent AA is a risky move that Russia doesn't HAVE to take right now.

That being said, SU-57 is probably only a tiny bit stealthy. I remember reports of a UFO on Ukrainian radar in the first few months of the war, and I'm almost certain that was an SU-57 testing if it could sneak past AA radar. Since it was obviously detected, they realized it won't work and have been lobbing standoff missiles with them instead as a direct result.

      >build a fighter designed to be able to conduct operations in heavy radar and AA environments
      >never use it in such environments out of fear that you might lose it
So what was the point of having them again? Why waste millions on designing a plane that's only used for parades?

The other anon is a moron, they would have used them in a combined arms role no different than the plan they already had, assuming they were ready. The US does not rely on wunderwaffen nonsense in active conflicts. They sent fricking B52s to Iraq and used them where they made sense. The fricking USS Iowa was used for shore bombardment.
There is no such thing as too good to use syndrome, because they can afford the losses.
I don't know why people this moronic even bother trying to post in these threads.

First flight of low rate initial production F-22 was in 1997. First dozen or so F-22 are in practice prototypes that aren't in anyway operationally deployable. To get combat useful F-22 in any form you'd have to wait for until around 2001 or so. Initial production airframes have been limited to training and testing use. They have couple that they use to testing, weapons integration and release tests for example, one of those has been flying around recently with shiny new radar absorbing skin. Rest are used in training to save flight hours of operational airframes. Few years ago when there was hurricane in Florida that wrecked air base, they made sure they flew out operational fighters and as they didn't have enough pilots fly all F-22's from under hurricane, they left couple LRIP airframes behind that may have been wrecked badly enough that it won't be worth fixing 'em.

US historic prototype designations are very much historic and now they use those pretty randomly. If they had applied old school designations properly for modern fighters, YF-22 and YF-23 would have had X or XF designations and limited rate initial production F-22's and F-35's would have had YF designations.

F-117 was already operationally capable aircraft by then and had been for some time. F-117 was a black program and didn't officially exist until 1988. First publicly announced deployment to operational unit was in 1989. While in reality first serial production airframes were delivered in 1982 and initial operational capability was reached in late 1983 by then they probably had handful of operational airframes and flight and ground crews trained. Last two dates being something they declassified well after the fact and because Gulf War made F-117 way more public issue than it had been when they initially declassified the program and public at large didn't really give a frick.

Compared to F-117, F-22 was a program that was too damn big to be classified and public form day 1.

If you’re a actual fifth gen fighter, your built for high-threat environments. F-35s wouldn’t have much trouble over ukraine

Western media confirm Su-57 has been shoting down Ukraine aircraft and attacking kiev with kh-59mk2 missiles.
Su-57 already more combat experience than F-22 and f-35 combined.

That's exactly how these kind of multi role planes are meant to function and what makes them so impressive you dumb moron. F-35 would also "lob" medium and long range AA, cruise missiles, glide bombs etc. while never being on enemy radars.

If your 5th gen fighter can't do a stealth and is not air superiority fighter.
    Then it isn't a 5th gen fighter.

Hell, it isn't even a 4th gen fighter.

    It's a fricking 3.5G HSPA+ of fighter planes.

If Su-57 is considered stealth, does that mean eurocanards are stealth as well, considering they have a smaller RCS?

F/A-18 Super Hornet is then next gen stealth since it's stealthier than either of these.

Even if we entertain the ridiculous notion that Su-57 is a 5th gen fighter, that still doesn't mean it should be risked in dogfights when
1)it can stay safely out of range
    2)there's 3 of them

Incidentally, the fact that they're willing to risk their limited fleet of Su-57s goes to show that the T-14s are actually non-existant.
