Me, I'm laughing. Drones are such a big problem they've compromised their tanks in other ways to stop them. The guns can't traverse, the tanks can't see shit. And now the crews have an even harder time escaping. They made it much easier to ATGM crews to ambush them.

Commander optics are overrated these days when some infantry or IFV behind can have a thermal drone and tablet giving you 360 degree spotting in every direction

We've already seen footage of it from both sides, its all tablets and drone feeds, not commanders looking out a hatch with binoculars like its WW2

        Anonymous

That's true for ISR but how do you get that information to the tank crew? The crew aren't the ones using the drones. Its some other dude in a different unit. You run into the issue of getting that information to them in an accurate and timely manner. How quick can you spot an ATGM team, and alert the tanks? Before they fire? Probably not.

        Anonymous

The Russians own off the shelf drones can't operate within their netz though. These things are blind unless they installed cameras externally hard wired to the commanders hatch

So you're saying they should rely on literal PS1 Tank Controls and hope the camera doesn't glitch the frick out (Get Jammed), get stuck on level geometry (Crash) or the change in perspective from one camera (drone) to another doesn't completely flip your controls and make you run head first into the monster (minefield) you were trying to avoid.

          Anonymous

No! RE1 had tank controls but a fixed overhead camera that gave you an adequate view of your environment and never changed, that's why they worked. If they had some kind of drone feed inside the tank it would be accurate, but they don't.

the ability for a commander to do his own sighting will always be vastly superior to having someone outside your vehicle do it

        >, not commanders looking out a hatch with binoculars like its WW2
this is because commanders have thermal sights and RWS to allow them to see out their vehicle without poking their heads out

pretty much every side banned them, since they increased weight for no increase in protection
field commanders would turn a blind eye to the practice at times because they improved crew morale, but if they had their way they then they would have been banned outright

its not as simple as that

if your entire tank is a shed its not as easy for drone operators to target critical parts or any crewment bailing out

if it's just netting or a cage you can still see where the engine deck or guy jumping out his hatch is.

I've also seen some people claim the exaust heat from the back of the tank could make a mess of thermal cameras as it just looks like a blob of hot metal, the latter point seems like cope though but idk enough about thermal cameras or thermal targeting

Twaddle. Russia is losing materiel significantly faster than it can manufacture it, and is only able to produce what it can by operating in an unsustainable wartime economy and burning through its cash reserves. They're reliant on refurbishing Soviet stocks in various categories (i.e. IFVs & APCs), and those reserves are more than 50% through. Russia has this Summer to make its gains, and then it has to turtle and terror bomb until ~Spring 2025, when its ability to make any meaningful gains will once again be in the hands of the Europeans and Americans. European defense commitments are slowly ramping up (slower than anyone would like, but undeniably up and accelerating), and Trump is more likely to support Ukraine than not if in power (he can skim lots out of a war). Russia on the other hand is economically degraded, not least by Ukrainian drone strikes, and reliant on those economic powerhouses Iran & North Korea.

Sweden and Finland are in NATO. Ukraine is in ascension talks with the EU. Russia has had its entire invasion force killed and its equipment lost. Russia had had its entire pre invasion ground army and all its equipment destroyed. Russia has ruined its economy, lost the best market for its gas and its 'president' can't even visit most other nations on earth without being arrested for war crimes. Russias propaganda networks in Europe have been banned and Russians can't even compete at the Olympics under the Russian flag. Russias entire first draft reserves and their reserve equipment has been destroyed. Russias flagship for the black sea fleet has been destroyed along with many other capital vessels and 1/4 of all its jets and 1.3 of its helicopters. 300 Billion that Russia desperately needs is frozen and 1000+ western companies have ceased business in Russia. So far there is no sign of Ukraine surrendering or the EU ever ceasing supporting Ukraine. Every day the war goes on Russia gets weaker and Ukraine gets stronger from new armaments factories and munition supply chains to F16s. Only someone immersed in Russian propaganda forgets the utter collapse of the Russian military in WW1 or the fact that there has already been infighting between an inept murderous mercenary and the Kremlin on Russian soil. Of course there have also been several bouts of incursions by anti-kremlin Russian forces. Russia has not achieved a single strategic objective. Not one. It is running on the fumes of its soviet era stockpile is no longer considered a serious or competent military power. The disarmament of Russia to ensure the last peace for Ukraine and the EU continues and will not stop or pause.

Long story short Ukraine purposefully conscripted 27 and above to spare their young population from this bullshit that's threatening their nation, so young men you've seen in combat volunteered for the fight.
Lowering the conscription age to 25 means that they have to dip further into their manpower reserve.
I don't think it should demoralize everyone though, it's not like King Monke can burn through prisoners, drunks and foreigners and when Ukrainians are battered he's gonna activate his cheat code and mobilize the youthful Muscovites and St. Pidorsburgians. In the long run, yeah, Russia can win. Why do you think Ukraine lowered the military age to 25 (I think), and instructed consulates to grab people hiding abroad? Because the average age of people on the front lines is 40+?
Vatniks are more capable of going through the grinder and remain victorious.

This hasn't been true since Napoleon and national armies began. You don't "run out of men" anymore. Russia has a population of like 140 million or some shit

See pic related, and I am not factoring the european allies doing their own sort of lend-lease to Ukraine, so the casualty ratio we are seeing today can only turn more in Ukraine's favor as russians continue losing equipment to territorial gain while being incapable to replace their original mechanized pool.

The increase of Russian deaths must happen. 5 thousand a day should get the goal. Everywhere in Russia is a target. Hit all the fuel going out. Cripple their support structure. Then bag and grab their online supporters.

If they keep hitting refineries at there current rate, Russia might not have enough fuel for all of their farm machines and we'll get the rather joyful experience of Russia and all of their friends they were feeding with their bountiful harvests starve as the crops rot in their fertile fields.

No Russia can't. Stop acting like you have unlimited manpower or unlimited anything period. You don't. For the millionth time you morons are acting like idiot lotto winners who think the money will never run out only to find their bank account in the red and the repo man coming after buying one useless thing too many. The men will run out. The legendary soviet scrapyard will run out. Even the Urals, MT-LBs, and T-55s and 54s will eventually run out the way Russia is fighting this war. If I was in Putin's seat I'd have had people like Gerasimov and Shoigu publicly executed over how badly this is going at least a year ago.

Russia is going to be paying for this gloriously bad boondoggle for the next century regardless of the outcome. Between the dead and wounded that's a whole lot of fighting (breeding and working) age males that are fricked up forever one way or another whether it's missing limbs, permanent disfigurement, or they're just straight up dead in some Ukrainian field. The Soviet weapon and vehicle stockpiles will simply never be replaced, once it's gone it's gone. Ukraine is going to have obscene amounts of western support in nearly every aspect of it's rebuilding, they'll still suffer effects but far less than Russia will. Russia's only hope is China and it's poor CSTO serfs who are likely thinking about finally jumping ship.

            >B-b-but Russia doesn't care!
And? Them not caring just means they're not getting out of the way of the pain train screaming straight at them. The longer this goes on the more likely yet another Russian civil war is. Another possibility is them becoming another sub-hive of China like the Norks are. It's abundantly clear Russians do not understand the concept of Pyrrhic victory and how bad they can be. The Russians successfully claiming any kind of victory period becomes less and less likely every day. Decisive victory left the table when the northern front collapsed.

Most of those aircraft aren't serviceable. But I bet they can coble a few MiG-27s together to make one more flight as improvised cruise missiles like the cessnas.

Most of the aiframes are Mig-23s, -27s and -31s. None of which are in service with the UAF at this time. They retired their Mig-23's 20 years ago and haven't bothered to try and bring any back like they did Su-24s. So I don't think these will serve as spare parts for them. Nor do I think they will serve as combat aircraft. But a plane doesn't have to be in good shape to fly one more time, and they are much faster and carry a heavier load than Cessnas.

[Open with gentle orchestral music, a sweeping aerial shot of a vast, open landscape]

David Attenborough (Voiceover): In the verdant fields of Ukraine, a land marked by the scars of conflict, a remarkable journey unfolds each year. This is not the migration of winged creatures bound for warmer climes, but rather the slow, deliberate trek of what locals have come to call the "turtle tanks."

[Cut to footage of tanks rolling across the landscape, their metal bodies gleaming in the sunlight]

Attenborough: These steel behemoths, native to the industrial heartlands of Russia, embark on their seasonal migration under the heavy skies of Eastern Europe. Driven not by instinct, but by the hands of men, these tanks are encased in an unusual armor.

[Close-up on the tanks, showing the welded sheets of metal and corrugated panels]

Attenborough: In a bid to shield themselves from the threats of modern warfare, these tanks have been outfitted with makeshift defenses. Sheets of metal, crudely welded onto their frames, serve as a primitive protection against the increasingly prevalent drone strikes.

[Switch to drone footage of the tanks, emphasizing the additional armor]

Attenborough: Yet, this added armor comes at a cost. The turrets, essential for their survival and offensive capabilities, are often hindered, their ability to turn compromised by the very shields meant to protect them.

[Cut to a scene of a tank struggling to rotate its turret]

Attenborough: Here, in this chess game of war, mobility and firepower are sacrificed for a semblance of safety—a trade that can render these goliaths almost as stationary as the ancient tortoises to which they are likened.

[Pan out to show a group of tanks halted in a field, juxtaposed against a serene sunset]

Attenborough: As the seasons change, so too does the landscape of battle. These turtle tanks, with their slow pace and encumbered might, continue their migration through the checkerboard fields of Ukraine, a poignant symbol of innovation and desperation intertwined.

[End with a lingering shot of the tanks fading into the twilight, the music softening]

Attenborough (Voiceover): In this vast theater of earth and sky, every creature, steel or flesh, must adapt to survive. And while the journey is fraught with peril, it is also a testament to the unyielding spirit of those who navigate the turbulent waters of war.

          [Fade to black, music ends]

[Opening shot of a vast, rugged landscape, with tanks rumbling across the terrain. The camera zooms in on one particular tank adorned with sheets of metal bolted on top, resembling a makeshift shell.]

David Attenborough (voiceover): "Behold, the great migration of the turtle tanks across the plains of Ukraine. These formidable creatures, adorned with sheets of metal bolted onto their frames, traverse the terrain with a purpose known only to them."

[Cut to footage of tanks moving in a convoy, their metal shells gleaming under the sunlight.]

"At first glance, one might mistake these armored beasts for ordinary tanks, but a closer inspection reveals their unique adaptation – the addition of metal plates, resembling the protective shell of a turtle. This ingenious modification serves as both defense and camouflage, blending seamlessly with the landscape."

[Camera pans to show the tanks navigating through diverse terrain, from open fields to dense forests.]

"Driven by the instinct to survive in a hostile environment, these turtle tanks embark on an epic journey, covering vast distances across Ukraine. Their migration routes are carefully chosen, avoiding potential threats while seeking sources of sustenance and strategic positions."

[Cut to footage of tanks maneuvering through urban areas, their metal shells providing cover amidst the rubble.]

it's not just a cage, the tank has a mine plow in front of the tracks.

such a mine plow could detonate a good number of mines before needing to be replaced. It''s not gonna demine an entire minefield but it will clear a path to an urban area to ferry infantry in and out with IFV's. Jammer on top too

          You don't know vatniks

They will be mocking you for decades to come if they get to keep any land not the other way around.

they will say look at map, we fought all of NATO equipment and killed bazillion Ukrainians, you gays lost the land and we gained, you guys gave up and so we won.

Wikipedia will say Russian Victory if they get any land as part of the peace process and they will put it in your face everytime.

They will tell everyone friendly with the US: "we have persevered and US gave up on it's friends as usual we have won, you can't trust Americans we are better international partners" and thirdies will believe it. Just like thirdies consider the Talibans the winner of the afghan war regardless that the Americans kicked them around for decades till they got tired it's still recognized as a loss.

If Russia gets to keep even just the dombass they will make songs about it, t-shirts and parade it as the ultimate victory over NATO.

This is how the vatnik mind works.

If they can claim ANY victory they will and will 100% believe in it.

They will also make the enemy sounds amazingly stronger with tales of thousands of NATO mercenaries defeated by puccia prison dredges, gloves never even came off, t14 never used and air force barely affected.

    Ukrainians are out of everything.

It's a case of survivorship bias.

Right now the Russians are successfully pushing because the Ukrainians have run out of ammo and tanks survive much more than before.

While that happened the turtle tank was deployed..

Russian saw the surviving of the turtle tanks and think the turtle deaign is the reason behind the success not the lack of Ukrainian equipment.

So now you get a lot more turtle tanks even if in reality it's just the Ukrainian having no javelins, low artillery, low on landmines and drones.

Ukraine is producing 1mil drones a year

problem is drones are countered by electronic warfare so you need to attack in places where the russian EW net cant reach you, but its a big front so theres always gaps. Also thats usually easier on the defensive once you disable their vehicle based jammers with cluster bombs because that shit is just sitting on the top vulnerable .

or just lob some anti-radiation missiles at the EW jammers. doesn't even need to be a fancy HARM. a tweaked sea sparrow would probably do the job of putting it out of action.

These jammers are cheap and everywhere. There aren't enough conventional ARMs in inventory to do the job. They should create an anti-radiation drone based on their cheap ass fpv drones. Use existing SDRs to home in on the signal and take them out.

It will take approximately 107 years to empty Russia's current manpool, on the other hand doing so will only account to an additional of 39000 Km2 given the current speed of russian conquest and casualties, not enough to take Ukraine, and by that point there will still be aproximately 2.2 million ukrainian men left, let alone NATO, as you may imagine this also mean russian industry, MIC (including nukes) would hav become unsustainable long ago.

Personally and seeing historical references russians have until late 2025 or early 2026 before there is a crippling collapse of the war effort.
It will cost around 200,000 additional Ukrainian casualties, but they will survive as a nation and with hope their existential trauma may force them to purge themselves of corruption and go through a demographic boom, this too has also happened

There is no unrest worth noting
There is no manpower shortage due to draft dodging
There isn't even civil resistance in the production of munitions

The meat waves have been going for 2 years straight WW1 style, men marching into a hail of bullets with no chance of success, and nobody cares. The Russian Serf does not care about his own life.

The same way it was unsustainable for the Germans in 1918 and 1945 again. You continue to take losses that you cannot replace in kind, meaning you have to resort to inferior substitutes that then get mulched up even harder, causing a downward spiral until your entire military has degraded to the point of being no longer capable of resisting the enemy.

                >There is no manpower shortage due to draft dodging
                1. *Laughs in millions of military-age males fleeing Russia.'
                2. Russia has increased the mobilisaiton age to 60 already, 65 for officers. Does this sound like there's no manpower worries to you, moron?

                >There isn't even civil resistance in the production of munitions
And yet military production is nowhere close to consumption at the front, and the old soviet stockpiles are getting emptier and emptier.

                >and nobody cares
And that's exactly why Russia is on course to losing this war. They are squandering men, squandering equipment, squandering supplies. All without achieving anything decisive. And outside zigger delusions, none of these things are, in fact, infinite. In these two years we've seen the Russian Army slowly but surely erode itself, and there is no sign of betterment to this ongoing degradation. To the contrary, it's slowly getting worse.

                >The Russian Serf does not care about his own life.
Which, again, IS A WEAKNESS, NOT A STRENGTH. Because in the end, it is immaterial wether they care or not. Their losses are real either way, and unsustainable either way. All that not caring does is ensure that they will do nothing to fix the very thing that is killing them. That they will blindly keep marching down that road, all the way to their doom.

There is also the fact this war has a bigger semblance to WW1 than WW2, so "we can take 50 million casualties and win" it's not going to work, the lend-lease is actually going to Ukraine and the russians broke when reaching 1.5 million casualties, what is more, the current attrition rate favors Ukraine, which is the one fighting an existential war.

Because it started decades ago and was facilitated by kleptocratic kremlin regime. It can't cause something that is already in full swing. russian demographic survived on millions of imported tajiks and uzbeks, breeding mountain muslims and stolen white people from Belarus and Ukraine.

See, the thing is, victory is achieved in a general sense because Russia is not a threat to anybody for a long time. Even if Ukraine fell tomorrow and there was zero resistance, the time it'd take for Russia to rebuild what they lost - even if the world removed sanctions and unrestricted trading - would take easily a decade to replace. If not longer. Do you not understand that real life is not a video game where you click an option in a menu, the land turns your colour and you then press buttons to make sure no rebel stacks spawn? Do you realise that you have to physically - in real life - maintain huge swathes of land that are full of people who don't like you? Do you realise that the 'land' that Russia is 'taking' is like pic related and is essentially worthless to Russia - in fact, is actually a detriment, because you've got to rebuild it - and therefore not the achievement you think it is?

Yes, Russia is hoping it can throw whatever it has to take the oblasts it annexed and had referendums for even though they didn't control the capitals of those oblasts. Once it has, it will try to claim victory and wiggle out. But that rests on Ukraine giving up as well.
